The Railways have sanctioned a direct passenger train between Nilambur and Ernakulam. The new train will replace the two existing passenger trains that run between Nilambur and Shoranur, and Shoranur and Ernakulam.Railway officials said here on Sunday that the new passenger train, facilitating direct travel from Nilambur to Ernakulam and back, would be an Onam gift for the Nilambur rail users.M.I. Shanavas, MP, had taken up the matter with the Railways following persistent demand for it by the Nilambur Mysore Railway Action Council.The train will leave Ernakulam at 7.35 a.m. and reach Nilambur at 1.05 p.m. It will depart from Nilambur at 2.55 p.m. and arrive at Ernakulam at 7.50 p.m.At present, the rake of the Nilambur-Shoranur passenger will be used for the Shoranur-Ernakulam passenger. Therefore, passengers heading for Ernakulam need not have to change the train at Shoranur.‘‘The new direct train will be a solace, especially for passengers from Ernakulam to Nilambur,’’ said C. Mohammed Ali and Biju Ninan, president and secretary respectively of the Nilambur Mysore Railway Action Council.The Nilambur sector has seven pair of trains, including an Express train. When four passenger trains run from Nilambur to Shoranur, one goes up to Palakkad and another up to Ernakulam. |

As it prepares for the trial run of the service, scheduled for the end of the year, Chennai Metro Rail is hastening the completion of stations.After Koyambedu and CMBT stations, the facility in Arumbakkam will be reach structural completion by the end of the month.Koyambedu and CMBT Metro stations reached the stage in December 2012.The Arumbakkam Metro Rail station will have ground, concourse and platform levels.As of now, the ground and the concourse levels have been completed, said officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).“We are in the course of constructing the platform level for the station; simultaneously, we are also focussing on the grid erection process in the station,” said an official of CMRL.In total, 13 elevated stations dot the city on a 21 km stretch.Consolidated Constructed Consortium (CCCL) has been carrying out the construction of Arumbakkam station in addition to Koyambedu, CMBT, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar at a cost of Rs. 139.54 crore.The station will have four entry and exit points, four lifts and eight escalators; there will also be a ramp to facilitate the movement of differently-abled people from the ground level to the concourse level.“We are also concentrating on laying the track till St. Thomas Mount. Track laying for 7 km of the 11 km stretch has been completed,” he added.Chennai Metro Rail plans to carry out the trial run on the 11 km stretch by December 2013 and expects to go operational by mid-2014. With a view to manage the increasing number of passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced a series of moves on Sunday. Senior Metro officials said the operations of four lines would be affected by the changes.According to officials, on the Dilshad Garden to Rithala line, six-coach trains would be introduced within the next four months. Currently, the DMRC runs 29 four-coach trains on the line.Officials said six additional trains would be converted from six-coach to eight-coach trains on the line from Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre."Presently, this line has a peak frequency of 2 minutes, 38 seconds, which is the highest among all lines. Twenty-seven eight coach trains are operated during morning peak hours such that Rajiv Chowk station gets two eight-coach trains out of every three trains that stop at the station," an official said.Two trips will also be started on September 9, from Kashmere Gate to Gurgaon, to ease the passenger traffic.Officials said on lines three and four — the Dwarka Sector-21 to Noida City Centre line and Dwarka to Vaishali lines — 29 eight-coach trains were being inducted."From Monday, two additional trains will be inducted during peak time, one from Janakpuri West to Vaishali and one from Noida Sector-16 to Dwarka Sector-21 to handle the peak- hour passenger rush," a senior official said. |
