Kozhikode: Five passengers, including women and children, who were taken seriously ill after consuming food from the Ernakulam- bound Marusagar Express from Ajmer on Saturday night, were discharged from hospitals in Kasaragod on Sunday.The passengers in two sleeper coaches and one third AC coach, mostly from Malappuram district, were hospitalized after they developed symptoms of food poisoning.The passengers showed signs of uneasiness on reaching Kankanady near Mangalore Junction.After they were given first aid at Mangalore, a doctor accompanied them to Kasaragod. The railways had arranged for ambulances to shift the sick passengers to hospitals. As many as 30 other passengers who fell ill after eating the food served from the pantry car were given first aid at the station itself, said K.Premsadan, TrafficCircle Inspector.On a complaint filed by one of the passengers, A.Shahul Hameed from Alappuzha, a case was registered at the Kasaragod Railway Police station. Sub Inspector K.Sukumaran is investigating the case.

Railways has not enough   health inspectors

Kochi: There’s a severe shortage of Health Inspectors under the Railway Medical Department who are to conduct regular checks on the quality of food served in trains. For instance, under the Trivandrum division itself, there are only 33 Health Inspectors who have to deal with over 130 express trains daily.

“Inspecting the quality of food on trains comes as an additional duty for Heath Inspectors. Apart from this job, they have to ensure that railway stations and railway quarters are kept neat. So, only random checks are possible”, sources said.

Only 25 per cent of the food is actually prepared in pantry cars while the rest is purchased from IRCTC outlets at stations. The food becomes stale if the train is late or leftover food is served to the pantry cars.“The fact is that earlier, railway eateries were well received by the travelling public.

But ever since the IRCTC was formed, the focus was on profit and quality suffered. What needs to be done at this point is that the railways should directly run or control the operation of pantry cars and other food outlets in stations. Currently, only the food served in Rajdhani Express is of top quality”, they said.

“The Marusagar incident now shows that passengers’ complaints of bad quality food being served on long-distance trains is genuine.

A complete change in catering is necessary and the railways should directly control the process”,  said All Kerala Rail Users Association president Paul K.J.Manvettom.

A 59-year-old man suffering from asthma had to climb 60 stairs and walk an extra 200 metres on a Sunday night because employees at MG Road Metro station had turned off the escalators and closed all but one exits even before the passengers of the last train had left.
Shri Ram Sikaria, a trader from Burtolla Street in north Calcutta, had boarded the last Dum Dum-bound train from Kalighat and got off at MG Road station at 10.20pm.
“The escalator from the platform to the mezzanine floor was static. So, I had to climb up a flight of about 20 stairs,” Sikaria told on Tuesday. He was gasping for breath by the time he reached the mezzanine floor.
Sikaria usually leaves the station through the Netaji Park gate as it is closer home. But on Sunday night, after crossing the flap gates, he was told by an employee that the Netaji Park gate had been closed.
The trader wanted to speak to the station master to know why the escalator had been turned off and the exit closed even before the passengers of the last train had left. But he was told that the station master had left.
“I had to walk again for 200 metres to the opposite side and climb another 40-odd stairs. I hadto rest for several minutes before I could start walking home,” recounted Sikaria, suffering from asthma for 30 years.
Doctors said the heart and lungs of a 59-year-old suffering from asthma would be under stress if he/she were asked to climb 60 stairs. “It’s difficult for the person to climb even 15 steps. But climbing 60-odd steps will put his heart and lung under stress,” said pulmonologist Asok Sengupta. “The person would feel short of breath, dizzy and suffocated.”
The problem is not exclusive to MG Road station.
The last Metro reaches different stations between 10pm and 10.30pm and at many stations, both on the underground and elevated stretches, commuters complain that the Metro employees stop escalators and elevators before the last train enters the platform in order to go home early.
Elderly passengers have to face the consequent ordeal and many allege that no employee could be found near the elevators who could be requested to turn it on.
Sanjay Kumar Basu, 72, a resident of Lake Road, had taken the last train from Park Street to Kalighat station a few weeks back. “I found the escalator on the platform switched off and there was no one whom I could request to turn it on,” said Basu, who suffers from arthritis.
He had to climb the stairs till the main exit and had to rest on the stairs for a while before he could walk back home.
When Metro visited MG Road station around the time Sikaria had got off, the situation was exactly as the trader had described. The escalators at both ends were static and an employee was downing the shutters of the Netaji Park exit.
He replied rudely to a request to open the gate. “What’s the matter? All the others have left,” the employee shouted. When told that all gates were supposed to be open till the day’s last passenger had left, the man did not reply.
When pressed, he reluctantly rolled up the shutter but only about three feet. It would be impossible for an elderly or physically challenged person to bend that low to get through the gap.

“The employees are supposed to keep the escalators and lifts running till the day’s last passenger leaves the station. Gates, too, are to be kept open till the last commuter has exited,” said a senior Metro official.
“Sometimes the employees turn off the escalators or down the shutters a little early in their hurry to reach home. But that is not allowed. If we receive a complaint, action will be taken against the guilty.”

मेट्रो की ब्लू लाइन पर यात्रियों की सुविधा के लिए सोमवार से आठ कोच वाली मेट्रो ट्रेन चलाई जाएगी। साथ ही, रक्षाबंधन की पूर्व संध्या व रक्षाबंधन वाले दिन भीड़ को ध्यान में रखते हुए 19 व 20 अगस्त को मेट्रो ट्रेन के फेरे बढ़ाने की भी घोषणा की गई है।
दिल्ली मेट्रो रेल निगम (डीएमआरसी) के अनुसार ब्लू लाइन द्वारका सेक्टर-21 से नोएडा सिटी सेंटर/वैशाली के बीच ट्रेन में यात्रियों की भारी भीड़ होती है। इसलिए इस रूट पर आठ कोच वाली कुल 31 ट्रेनें चरणबद्ध तरीके से चलाने की घोषणा की गई है। इसमें पहली आठ कोच वाली ट्रेन 19 अगस्त से चलने लगेगी। सोमवार सुबह आठ बजे द्वारका मेट्रो स्टेशन से यह ट्रेन नोएडा सिटी सेंटर के लिए रवाना होगी।
पिछले वर्षो में रक्षाबंधन व उसके एक दिन पहले मेट्रो में होने वाली भीड़ को देखते हुए 19 व 20 अगस्त को ऑफ पीक ऑवर में भी मेट्रो ट्रेनों की फ्रिक्वेंसी कम नहीं की जाएगी। अमूमन सुबह साढ़े ग्यारह से शाम साढ़े चार बजे तक की अवधि में भीड़ कम होती है। इस वजह से इस दौरान मेट्रो ट्रेनों की फ्रिक्वेंसी कम कर दीजाती है, लेकिन अगले दो दिनों तक ऐसा नहीं किया जाएगा। इस दौरान ट्रेनें करीब तीन सौ अतिरिक्त फेरे लगाएंगी।
यात्रियों की भीड़ को नियंत्रित करने के लिए प्रमुख मेट्रो स्टेशनों पर 93 गार्ड व कस्टमर फेसिलिटेशन एजेंट (सीएफए) तैनात किए जाएंगे। दिलशाद गार्डन, शाहदरा, वेलकम, सीलमपुर, शास्त्री पार्क, पीतमपुरा, रोहिणी ईस्ट, रोहिणी वेस्ट, रिठाला, जहांगीर पुरी, आदर्श नगर,जीटीबी नगर, यमुना बैंक, उत्तम नगर ईस्ट, नवादा, नोएडा सिटी सेंटर, बॉटनिकल गार्डन, नोएडा सेक्टर 18, एमजी रोड, हुडा सिटी सेंटर, सरिता विहार, लाजपत नगर, बदरपुर, पीरागढ़ी, नांगलोई, मुंडका आदि स्टेशनों पर अतिरिक्त सीएफए तैनात रहेंगे। इसी तरह से 75 स्टेशनों पर 123 मेट्रो टिकटिंग स्टाफ की तैनाती होगी।
डीएमआरसी के अनुसार, पिछले वर्ष रक्षाबंधन के दिन 20 लाख तथा उसके एक दिन पहले 22 लाख यात्रियों ने मेट्रो से यात्रा की थी। वहीं इस वर्ष 8 अगस्त को एक दिन में मेट्रो से यात्रा करने वाले यात्रियों की संख्या 25 लाख तक पहुंच गई है। इसलिए भीड़ को नियंत्रित करने में किसी तरह की परेशानी नहीं होगी।

दिल्ली मेट्रो रेल निगम ने द्वारका सेक्टर 21 से नोएडा सिटी सेंटर-वैशाली मार्ग पर यात्रियों की सुविधा के लिए पहली बार आठ डिब्बों वाली मेट्रो ट्रेन का परिचालन शुरू कर दिया है.

आठ डिब्बों वाली यह ट्रेन सुबह 8 बजे द्वारका मेट्रो स्टेशन से चलकर नोएडा सिटी सेंटर तक पहुंची.

गौरतलब है कि द्वारका सेक्टर 21 से नोएडा सिटी सेंटर और वैशाली मार्ग पर चरणबद्ध ढंग से शुरू की जाने वाली आठ डिब्बों वाली ऐसी 31 ट्रेनों में से यह पहली ट्रेन है.

बिहार के खगड़िया जिले के समस्तीपुर डिविजन के भमारा रेलवे स्टेशन के पास सोमवार की सुबह राज्यरानी एक्सप्रेस से कटकर 20 कांवड़ियों की मौत हो गई। सूत्रों ने बताया कि रेलवे ट्रैक पार करते समय तीर्थयात्री ट्रेन की चपेट में आ गए। मेडिकल वैन को घटनास्थल पर भेजा गया है। दुर्घटना के बाद रेल सेवा पूरी तरह रद्द कर दी गई है।
देश में सबसे भीषण रेल हादसा 1981 में हुआ था जब एक ट्रेन पुल से नदी में गिर गई थी। इस हादसे में करीब 800 लोग मारे गए थे। हर छह या सात महीने में होने वाले ये हादसे एशिया के सबसे बड़े रेल नेटवर्क की खोखली परतें खोल देते हैं। साल 2000 से अब तक हुए बड़े रेल हादसों पर एक नजर:
3 दिसंबर 2000: पंजाब में सराय बंजारा और साधुगढ़ के बीच हावड़ा-अमृतसर मेल पटरी से उतरी मालगाड़ी पर चढ़ गई। इस हादसे में 46 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी और 130 से अधिक लोग घायल हो गए थे।
22 जून 2001: केरल में कोझिकोड के निकट मंगलोर-चेन्नई मेल कडालुंदी नदी में गिर गई थी। इस हादसे में 40 लोग मारे गए थे।
12 मई 2002: नई दिल्ली से पटना जा रही श्रमजीवी एक्सप्रेस उत्तर प्रदेश के जौनपुर में पटरी से उतर गई थी जिसमें 12 लोगों की मौत हुई थी।
4 जून 2002: कासगंज एक्सप्रेस उत्तर प्रदेश में एक रेलवे क्रासिंग पर एक बस से टकरा गई थी जिसमें 34 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
10 सितंबर 2002: कोलकाता से नई दिल्ली आ रही राजधानी एक्सप्रेस बिहार में एक पुल पर पटरी से उतर गई थी जिसमें 120 लोग मारे गए थे।
3 जून 2003: दक्षिण-मध्य महाराष्ट्र में एक एक्सप्रेस गाड़ी के तीन डिब्बे पटरी से उतर गए थे जिसमें 18 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
15 मई 2003: पंजाब में एक तेज रफ्तार पैसेंजर रेलगाड़ी में स्टोव के फटने से आग लग गई थी जिसमें 40 लोगों की मौत हुई थी और 50 से अधिक घायल हो गए थे।
22 जून 2003: पहला बड़ा रेल हादसा महाराष्ट्र के सिंधुदुर्ग जिले में कोंकण रेलखंड के वैभववाड़ी स्टेशन के निकट हुआ था। इसमें करवार-मुम्बई सेंट्रल होली डे स्पेशल गाड़ी के तीन डिब्बे इंजन सहित पटरी से उतर गए थे। इस हादसे में तीन बच्चों सहित 53 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी और 25 घायल हो गए थे।
2 जुलाई 2003: आंध्र प्रदेश में एक रेलगाड़ी के दो डिब्बे इंजन सहित एक पुल के नीचे से गुजर रहे वाहनों पर गिर गए थे। इस हादसे में वाहन सवारों सहित कम से कम 22 यात्रियों की मौत हो गई थी।
16 जून 2004: मुम्बई जा रही मत्स्यगंधा एक्सप्रेस महाराष्ट्र के रायगढ़ जिले में एक पुल पार करते समय पटरी से उतर गई थी। इस हादसे में 20 लोग मारे गए थे और 60 से अधिक घायल हो गए थे।
28 मई 2010: पश्चिम बंगाल में रेल पटरियों में तोड़फोड़ के कारण ज्ञानेश्वरी एक्सप्रेस के 13 डिब्बे पटरियों से उतर गए थे और उनमें एक मालगाड़ी ने टक्कर मार दी थी। इस हादसे में 148 लोगों की मौत हुई थी।
19 जुलाई 2010: सियालदह जा रही उत्तरबंगा एक्सप्रेस पश्चिम बंगाल के बीरभूम जिले में सैंथिया स्टेशन पर वनांचल एक्सप्रेस से टकरा गई थी जिसमें कम से कम 60 लोग मारे गए थे।
22 मई 2011: बिहार के मधुबनी जिले में एक मानव रहित रेलवे क्रॉसिंग पर एक पैसेंजर ट्रेन एक वाहन से टकरा गई थी। इस हादसे में वाहन में सवार 16 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
7 जुलाई 2011: उत्तर प्रदेश में एक मानव रहित रेलवे क्रॉसिंग पर 80 यात्रियों को लेकर जा रही एक बस के रेलगाड़ी से टकरा जाने पर कमसे कम 31 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
22 नवंबर 2011: झारखंड के गिरिडीह में हावड़ा-देहरादून एक्सप्रेस में आग लग जाने से सात लोग जिंदा जल गए थे।
11 जनवरी 2012: दिल्ली जा रही ब्रह्मपुत्र मेल और एक मालगाड़ी के बीच टक्कर में पांच लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
22 मई 2012: बेंगलूर जा रही हम्पी एक्सप्रेस आंध्र प्रदेश के अनंतपुर जिले में एक मालगाड़ी से टकरा गई थी। इस हादसे में कम से कम 25 लोग मारे गए थे।
31 मई 2012: हावड़ा से देहरादून जा रही दून एक्सप्रेस उत्तर प्रदेश में जौनपुर के निकट पटरी से उतर गई थी। इस हादसे में कम से कम सात लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
30 जुलाई 2012: दिल्ली से चेन्नई जा रही तमिलनाडु एक्सप्रेस की एक बोगी में आंध्र प्रदेश के नेल्लोर के समीप आग लग जाने से कम से कम 35 यात्री जिंदा जल गए।

वाराणसी : उत्तर रेलवे के वाराणसी फैजाबाद सेक्शन में मालगाड़ी के पटरी से उतर जाने सहित रेल पटरियों के क्षतिग्रस्त होने के चलते रविवार को भी वाराणसी से गोण्डा जाने वाली इंटरसिटी एक्सप्रेस को निरस्त कर दिया गया। उस मार्ग से गुजरने वाली दूसरी ट्रेनों को दूसरे रास्ते से कैंट स्टेशन लाया गया।

स्टेशन उपाधीक्षक कैंट यूपी सिंह ने बताया कि रेलमार्ग के क्षतिग्रस्त होने के कारण रेलवे कन्ट्रोल लखनऊ के निर्देश पर इंदौर-पटना एक्सप्रेस, जोधपुर से कैंट आने वाली मरुधर एक्सप्रेस, बरेली से कैंट आने वाली बरेली एक्सप्रेस को फैजाबाद, सुल्तानपुर, जफराबाद होकर कैंट लाया गया। इसी क्रम में धनबाद से फिरोजपुर को जाने वाली किसान एक्सप्रेस को जफराबाद, सुल्तानपुर, फैजाबाद होकर लखनऊ के लिए रवाना किया गया। इसके अलावा वाराणसी-लखनऊ पैसेंजर ट्रेनों को भी मार्ग बदलकर चलाया गया। मार्ग परिवर्तन कर संचालन किये जाने से ट्रेनों के विलम्ब से यात्रियों को काफी परेशानी की सामाना करना पड़ा।

आसनसोल : चित्तरंजन रेल इंजन कारखाना (चिरेका) ने वर्ष 2013-14 के 100वें इलेक्ट्रिक लोकोमोटिव संख्या 312410 (डब्ल्यूएजी-9एच) को बुधवार को राष्ट्र को समर्पित किया। वर्कशाप के अंदर आयोजित समारोह में चिरेका महाप्रबंधक राधेश्याम ने झंडा दिखाकर इंजन को रवाना किया। समारोह को संबोधित करते हुए महाप्रबंधक राधेश्याम ने कहा कि इस वर्ष के 100वें विद्युत रेल इंजन का उत्पादन चिरेका कर्मचारियों के प्रयास से हो पाया है। आशा है कि चिरेका रेलवे बोर्ड के दिए गए 275 इलेक्ट्रिक लोकोमोटिव उत्पादन लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करने में सक्षम होगा। चिरेका ने वर्ष 2013-14 के 100वें इलेक्ट्रिक लोकोमोटिव का उत्पादन कर कीर्तिमान हासिल किया है। पिछले वित्त वर्ष की इसी अवधि के दौरान 83 लोकोमोटिव का उत्पादन किया गया था। महाप्रबंधक ने अधिकारियों और कर्मचारियों को इस उत्कृष्ट कार्य के लिए 25,000 रुपये पुरस्कार की घोषणा की।

बिलासपुर। जोन के चीफ कमर्शियल मैनेजर (सीसीएम) की योजना पर अमल किया गया तो आने वाले समय में रिजर्वेशन काउंटर रविवार को भी रात 10 बजे तक खुले रहेंगे। सीसीएम ने सभी डिवीजन के सीनियर डीसीएम को नई व्यवस्था लागू करने की तैयारी के निर्देश दिए हैं। यह व्यवस्था पायलट प्रोजेक्ट के तौर पर जोन के 6 रेलवे स्टेशन में लागू होगी।
चीफ कमर्शियल मैनेजर प्रकाश राव वाजलवार ने शनिवार को बिलासपुर, रायपुर और नागपुर डिवीजन के सीनियर डीसीएम सहित कमर्शियल इंस्पेक्टरों की बैठक ली। बैठक में आय बढ़ाने पर चर्चा हुई। आम लोगों से जुड़े मसले की बात करें तो सीसीएम ने रिजर्वेशन का समय बढ़ाने का प्रस्ताव रखा। उन्होंने मौजूद अफसरों को बताया कि सेंट्रल रेलवे में रविवार को सेकेंड हाफ में रिजर्वेशन काउंटर खोला जा रहा है और इसका अच्छे परिणाम भी आए हैं। उन्होंने डिवीजन के अफसरों को निर्देशित किया है कि वे चुनिंदा स्टेशनों में ऐसी सुविधा देने की योजना पर काम करें। गौरतलब है कि वर्तमान में रविवार को रिजर्वेशन काउंटर दोपहर 2 बजे तक ही खुले रहते हैं। सीसीएम की योजना पर अमल हुआ तो इस दिन भी रात 10 बजे तक रिजर्वेशन हो सकेगा।
6 स्टेशनों में मिलेगी सुविधा:रविवार को सेकेंड टाइम में भी रिजर्वेशन काउंटर खुला रखने पर अमल किया गया तो यह सुविधा जोन के 6 स्टेशनों में सबसे पहले लागू होगी। दरअसल ये वो स्टेशन हैं, जहां पायलट प्रोजेक्ट के तौर पर रात 10 बजे तक रिजर्वेशन की सुविधा दी गई है। इस सूची में बिलासपुर डिवीजन के बिलासपुर, रायगढ़, रायपुर डिवीजन के रायपुर, दुर्ग और नागपुर डिवीजन के गोंदिया, इतवारी स्टेशन शामिल हैं। रात 10 बजे तक रिजर्वेशन की सुविधा भी सीसीएम के निर्देश पर मिली है।
थंब मशीन पकड़ेगी टीटीई की चालाकी
सीसीएम को इस बात की शिकायत मिली थी कि टीटीई रिकार्ड में उपस्थिति तो दर्ज करते हैं, लेकिन लाइन ड्यूटी पर जाते ही नहीं। ऐसी गड़बडिय़ों पर रोक लगाने के लिए रेलवे स्टेशनों में थंब इंप्रेशन मशीन लगाने की योजना है। पहले चरण में रायपुर, दुर्ग, बिलासपुर, रायगढ़ और गोंदिया स्टेशन में मशीन लगाए जाएंगे। इसका फायदा यह होगा कि टीटीई ड्यूटी ऑन होने वाले स्टेशन के अलावा डयूटी खत्म होने वाले स्टेशन में भी थंब मशीन का उपयोग करेंगे। इससे साबित होगा कि संबंधित टीटीई लाइन ड्यूटी पर रहा या नहीं।

Emphasising that the strength and growth of India and the economic relationship it shared with the US "catalyses the growth of our partnership", Powell said the education, social, cultural, and economic ties contribute to the US-India relations.On Wednesday, Powell also met with chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, a courtesy meeting following the first in August last year, where she had expressed a desire to increase US presence in UP and had said the country was interested in the various investment opportunities present in the state. She had also sought information on the UP government's priority sectors.

Powell also visited the Ehsaas children's shelter at Charbagh railway station, where streetchildren are provided education and vocational training. The shelter also works closely with the railway police on issues relating to child welfare.

Powell, during her visit to IIM-L, said the US sees India as a leading strategic partner and is keen to take the relationship further.

Acknowledging the need to promote the presence of women in the corporate sector, IIM-L director Devi Singh told Powell that the institute is taking concerted steps to increase the presence of women in the corporate sector as a result of which women comprise 40% of the student base at the institute.
