In a first, Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), Gorakhpur, has implemented a three-tier digital security system using live video surveillance of examination halls, biometrics and digital photographs to curb malpractices such as impersonation in railway examinations.Railway officials said the security system was used for the first time in an examination held in Lucknow Sunday when more than 12,000 applicants appeared from 15 centres in the city.Moradabad Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Manoj Kumar Sharma who supervised the technical aspects, said all the examination halls were equipped with cameras and live visuals were monitored from a control room set-up in the office of Divisional Railway Manager, North Eastern Railway.Railways recruitment examinations have witnessed numerous cases of cheating and impersonation including some big multi-crore recruitment rackets. Sharma admits there are rackets run for getting candidates selected using fraudulent means and their main target is the RRB exams, for which they charge exorbitant amounts from candidates.He said officials collected the biometrics and digital photographs of all candidates and the data will be used to match at the time of recruitment of those who qualify the written examination.RRB, Gorakhpur, carries out recruitment of Group C staff of headquarter offices, Izzat Nagar, Lucknow and Varanasi divisions of North Eastern Railway, and also for Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow.

Karunanidhi on Saturday warned of rail blockades and black flags on houses and commercial establishments across Tamil Nadu if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not declare that India would not participate in the CHOGM in Colombo, Indian media reported.Indian media quoted Karunanidhi in a statement, as saying: "The prime minister without neglecting Tamils' demand should categorically and openly declare that India will not participate in the meet."He said the Sri Lankan government has lost credibility in the international forum and it is trying to dilute the provisions of 13th amendment to its constitution.

LUCKNOW: Making her second trip to Uttar Pradesh since she was appointed US ambassador to India, Nancy Powell on Wednesday met chief minister AkhileshYadav, interacted with students and staff of Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow and hosted women leaders working to combat gender-bias and child labour."Every time I visit, I am impressed by how this historic city is home to some of the brightest young professionals who will shape the future of Lucknow and indeed India,"Speaking about economic cooperation, bilateral trade, and the challenge of creating jobs for young Indians and Americans, Powell, during her interaction with IIM-L students, encouraged them to pursue innovative solutions to challenges faced by both countries. Emphasising that the strength and growth of India and the economic relationship it shared with the US "catalyses the growth of our partnership", Powell said the education, social, cultural, and economic ties contribute to the US-India relations.On Wednesday, Powell also met with chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, a courtesy meeting following the first in August last year, where she had expressed a desire to increase US presence in UP and had said the country was interested in the various investment opportunities present in the state. She had also sought information on the UP government's priority sectors.

Powell also visited the Ehsaas children's shelter at Charbagh railway station, where streetchildren are provided education and vocational training. The shelter also works closely with the railway police on issues relating to child welfare.

Powell, during her visit to IIM-L, said the US sees India as a leading strategic partner and is keen to take the relationship further.

Acknowledging the need to promote the presence of women in the corporate sector, IIM-L director Devi Singh told Powell that the institute is taking concerted steps to increase the presence of women in the corporate sector as a result of which women comprise 40% of the student base at the institute.

वाराणसी : उत्तर रेलवे के वाराणसी फैजाबाद सेक्शन में मालगाड़ी के पटरी से उतर जाने सहित रेल पटरियों के क्षतिग्रस्त होने के चलते रविवार को भी वाराणसी से गोण्डा जाने वाली इंटरसिटी एक्सप्रेस को निरस्त कर दिया गया। उस मार्ग से गुजरने वाली दूसरी ट्रेनों को दूसरे रास्ते से कैंट स्टेशन लाया गया।

स्टेशन उपाधीक्षक कैंट यूपी सिंह ने बताया कि रेलमार्ग के क्षतिग्रस्त होने के कारण रेलवे कन्ट्रोल लखनऊ के निर्देश पर इंदौर-पटना एक्सप्रेस, जोधपुर से कैंट आने वाली मरुधर एक्सप्रेस, बरेली से कैंट आने वाली बरेली एक्सप्रेस को फैजाबाद, सुल्तानपुर, जफराबाद होकर कैंट लाया गया। इसी क्रम में धनबाद से फिरोजपुर को जाने वाली किसान एक्सप्रेस को जफराबाद, सुल्तानपुर, फैजाबाद होकर लखनऊ के लिए रवाना किया गया। इसके अलावा वाराणसी-लखनऊ पैसेंजर ट्रेनों को भी मार्ग बदलकर चलाया गया। मार्ग परिवर्तन कर संचालन किये जाने से ट्रेनों के विलम्ब से यात्रियों को काफी परेशानी की सामाना करना पड़ा।

MADURAI: Having provided escalator facilities at the Madurai Junction, the Madurai railway division has now proposed to install four lifts for the benefit of the passengers. Railway divisional manager, A K Rastogi announced this during the Independence Day celebration held at the Red Fields Ground in Railway Colony on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering after hoisting the tricolour and accepting the guard of honour, Rastogi said in addition to the Madurai Junction, three lifts each would be provided at the Tirunelveli and Dindigul stations. The passenger lifts will have a capacity of carrying 20 people, Rastogi added. Recently, the Madurai division inaugurated three sets of escalators at the Madurai Junction at a cost of Rs 5.25 crore. Rastogi also said that escalators would be provided at the Tirunelveli station.During the current fiscal, the division has already spent Rs.2.9 crore for passenger amenity works up to July 13. Provision of additional passenger amenities such as raising and widening of platforms, additional platform shelters, drinking water, waiting halls, counters, improvement to platforms and station circulating area are undertaken at many stations wherever the need was felt, he stated.

On the safety front, he said that the division has proposed to close down the unmanned level crossings since the increased rail-road interface at the level crossings, both manned and unmanned, makes them potential accident spots and demand higher safety. The division has planned to man 20 unmanned level crossings, provide 30 limited use subways, 30 diversions and 20 outright closures during this financial year.

Rastogi further announced that the division achieved a total earnings of Rs 161.89 crore including the miscellaneous earnings up to July in which Rs 114.27 crore came from passenger traffic and Rs 33.38 crore from goods traffic. The division has loaded 0.3371 million tonnes of freight in these four months, he added.

On the gauge conversion work, he said that the Palani - Pollachi section is expected to be completed shortly and the division is keen to introduce the trains announced in the railway budget as early as possible. Recently, Madurai division introduced the Silambu Express from Manamadurai and Link Express from Tuticorin. New passenger trains were also introduced between Sengottai and Tirunelveli while the Madurai - Dindigul passenger was extended to Palani and Madurai - Kollam passenger was extended to Punalur.

celebrations, members of the Southern Railway Women's Welfare Organisation, Madurai headed by their president Shafali Rastogi visited the railway hospital in the city and donated four fibre cots, besides biscuits, Horlicks packets and tiffin carriers. A friendly cricket match was also played between Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Madurai and Madurai Railway Division.

GUWAHATI  – Riding on a solitary goal scored by Sibra Narzary in the 84th minute, NF Railway Sports Club earned full points against Green Valley Sports Club in today’s match of the Abhishek Motors GSA Super Division Football League for the RG Baruah Trophy.In a close match at the Nehru Stadium here, Sibra found the net with a suddenly taken left footer. Railway midfielder Bapa Biswas sent the ball to Chayaram Boro who set it for Sibra. He took no time in taking the shot. Green Valley goal keeper Sukanta Roy was caught on wrong foot and the ball sailed into the goal surprising the custodian.The match was started with a positive note as both the teams adopted attacking tactics at the initial stage. It was a fast-paced encounter in the first 25 minutes where several goal bound moves were initiated from either sides. The session may be termed as a story of missed chances. Green Valley’s Nigerian striker Micheal Lucky Kelechuke missed the easiest scoring opportunity of the day when he failed to divert the ball into the Railway goal in the 20th minute. After few minutes Jenga Rongmei squandered another easy opportunity.

For NF Railway Duleswar Rabha failed to shoot home in the 23rd minute off a pass from Sibra. It was, however, Green Valley defender Satwinder Singh who made a goal line save.

In the second session substitute Thomson Langthasa failed to hit the target from a close range.

Ganga SC win: Ganga Sports Club recorded their fourth consecutive wins in the A Division League and stood top in the table with 12 points. Displaying another quality game Ganga boys defeated Abutani Sports Club 4-2 today.

Seven passengers travelling by the Ajmer-Ernakulam Marusagar Express who complained of uneasiness after consuming food on the train were treated at the General Hospital and Malik Dinar Hospital here on Saturday night. The passengers showed symptoms of food poisoning, hypertension, and low pulse rate, said a senior Railway official. The train reached Kasaragod station at 11.02 p.m.On being alerted from Mangalore about the commotion on the train, Railway officials had requisitioned the services of a team of physicians and paramedical staff from the hospitals. The District Medical Officer and the Railway Divisional Medical Officer from Mangalore, who reached here by the same train, and his counterpart from Kannur supervised the medical treatment.Three ambulances from the hospitals and the Fire and Rescue Services and police personnel were requisitioned at the station by 10 p.m., an hour ahead of the arrival of the train that reached here after halting at Mangalore Junction, to facilitate treatment to the affected persons.

The seven affected passengers, including Mohammed Kutty (35), Mohammed Ali (35), both hailing from Perinthalmanna, and Abu Baker (64) from Mannarcaud, were admitted to the General Hospital and Malik Dinar Hospital. They were discharged by 3 a.m. and could continue their onward journey on the Ernakulam-bound Mangala Express from Delhi at 3.30 a.m., he said.

A few other affected passengers, in S-11 and S-12 coaches of the train, were administered first aid at the railway station. The train was allowed special stoppages at Kanhangad, Tanur, Pattambi as requested by the affected passengers, they said.

The passengers complained about the “rude” behaviour of the pantry car manager.

Piyush Aggarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, had promised to take up the matter with the Railway Ministry, he said.

The city got its eighth train to the temple town of Somnath, with Rajkot MP Kunvarji Bavalia flagging off the Rajkot-Somnath local train from the city on Sunday morning.

Bavalia gave the nod to the train from Platform 4 at the Rajkot railway junction at 11 am in the presence of Congress MLA from Rajkot East, Indranil Rajyaguru and Rajkot divisional railway manager (DRM) Viany Babtiwale. "There has been a demand for this train from passengers and various organisations. We expect to see good passenger traffic on the new train," Babtiwale said.

The new train will leave Rajkot junction at 5.20 am every morning and reach Somnath at 10.20 am. On its return journey, the train will leave Somnath at 11 am and arrive at Rajkot at 3.55 pm, an official release said.

Railway officials said the train has been sanctioned by the Union Railway Ministry and the Railway Board after representation from Bavalia, a Congress MP.

In the rail budget 2013-14, Rajkot division was not awarded a single new train. However, following representation by the MP, the division was allocated Rajkot-Somnath local train, while the Morbi-Wankaner DEMU train was extended till Rajkot.

Besides, a new super-fast weekly train, Rajkot Nizamuddin, and a weekly Okha Nathdwara were also announced.

This will be the city's eighth train and the third one exclusively connecting the city to Somnath in Junagadh district. Before the new train, Dwarka-Somnath (12.50 am), Ahmedabad-Veraval Express (2.30 am), Rajkot-Somnath (7.50 am and 6.20 pm) Saurashtra mail (11.15 am), Jabalpur-Somnath (1.15 pm), Ahmedabad-Somnath intercity (3.15 pm) have been plying on this route.

The Railways have revised the schedule of Vasco-da-Gama and Velankani Weekly Express till September 16. South Western Railway, Bangalore Division, in a release said that Vasco-da-Gama-Yeshwanthpur-Velankani Weekly Express (17315) will leave Vasco-da-Gama at 2.10 p.m. on Monday instead of 9 a.m., and arrive at Yeshwanthpur on Tuesday at 5.15 a.m. instead of 11.10 p.m. It will leave Yeshwanthpur at 5.30 a.m. instead of 11.30 p.m. to reach Velankani at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday instead of 12.25 p.m.
