আজ সকালে রেল লাইন পারাপারের সময় বড়সড় দুর্ঘটনা ঘটে গেল বিহারের সমস্তিপুর ডিভিশনের ধামারা ঘাট স্টেশনে। রেল সূত্রে খবর, আজ সকাল ৯টা নাগাদ কাত্যায়নী মন্দির থেকে পুজো দিয়ে ফেরার পথে লাইন পারাপারের সময় রাজ্যরানি এক্সপ্রেসের ধাক্কায় জখম হয়েছেন অসংখ্য মানুষ। বিহার পুলিশ সূত্রে খবর, ঘটনায় ৩৫ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে। আহতদের মধ্যে অনেকের অবস্থা আশঙ্কাজনক। ঘটনার জেরে ধামারা ঘাট স্টেশন ঘেরাও করেন স্থানীয় মানুষ। স্টেশন মাস্টারকে আটকে রেখে স্টেশনে ব্যাপক ভাঙচুর চালান বিক্ষুব্ধ জনতা। এমনকি রাজ্যরানি এক্সপ্রেসের একটি বাতানুকুল কামরায় আগুন লাগিয়ে দেয় ক্ষিপ্ত জনতা। স্টেশন মাস্টারের সঙ্গে সমস্তিপুর ডিভিশনের যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে গিয়েছে। পরিস্থিতি সামাল দিতে ঘটনাস্থলে পাঠানো হয় পুলিশ এবং আরপিএফ-এর বিশাল বাহিনী। আহতদের উদ্ধারের জন্য দু’টি রিলিফ ট্রেনও পাঠানো হয় ধামারা ঘাট স্টেশনে। মৃত্যুর সংখ্যা আরও বাড়তে পারে বলে আশঙ্কা করা হচ্ছে। ঘটনাস্থল পরিদর্শনে যান পূর্ব-মধ্য রেলের কর্তারা। এই দুর্ঘটনায় মৃতের পরিবারপিছু ২ লক্ষ টাকা ক্ষতিপূরণ ঘোষণা করেছে বিহার সরকার।

With raised platforms and R.O. plant to supply purified drinking water

The small railway station here that survived a closure threat three decades back is witnessing a good patronage now.The Thiruthangal railway station was established in 1932. In 1984, the Southern Railway decided to close this station along with six other small railway stations such as Meesalur, Sankaralingapuram and Karivalamvandhanallur. But following strong protests by the Thiruthangal residents, the railways dropped the idea to close the station.About 1,300 to 1,500 passengers use it every day. The railway station’s net earnings, which was Rs.29.33 lakh in 2011-12 has rose to Rs.45.21 lakh in 2012-2013. As many as 10,891 open tickets were issued and 16,707 tickets booked in 2012-13.Though these figures indicate a good patronage, the railway station did not have adequate facilities to serve the passengers.After gauge conversion, the platforms were not raised to serve broad gauge trains, making it difficult for passengers to alight from or board trains.After the railway authorities cited fund crunch as a reason for not raising the platform, a native of this town and philanthropist, R.G.Chandramogan, donated Rs.30 lakh for the work three months back. A reverse osmosis plant to supply purified drinking water to passengers, a parcel room and coach indicators were also established at the station.

The railway authorities plan to erect five passenger shelters on the platform soon. To facilitate easy access for the physically-challenged people, a ramp has been constructed.

Mr.Chandramogan was felicitated by Divisional Railway Manager A.K.Rastogi and Additional Divisional Railway Manager V.Ajithkumar at a function organised here on Saturday.

The speakers at the function sought introduction of new trains on this route, extension of Chennai Egmore-Manamadurai Silambu Express to Shencottah, link train to Vaigai Express and an additional passenger train in the Madurai-Shencottah sector.

Kozhikode: Five passengers, including women and children, who were taken seriously ill after consuming food from the Ernakulam- bound Marusagar Express from Ajmer on Saturday night, were discharged from hospitals in Kasaragod on Sunday.The passengers in two sleeper coaches and one third AC coach, mostly from Malappuram district, were hospitalized after they developed symptoms of food poisoning.The passengers showed signs of uneasiness on reaching Kankanady near Mangalore Junction.After they were given first aid at Mangalore, a doctor accompanied them to Kasaragod. The railways had arranged for ambulances to shift the sick passengers to hospitals. As many as 30 other passengers who fell ill after eating the food served from the pantry car were given first aid at the station itself, said K.Premsadan, TrafficCircle Inspector.On a complaint filed by one of the passengers, A.Shahul Hameed from Alappuzha, a case was registered at the Kasaragod Railway Police station. Sub Inspector K.Sukumaran is investigating the case.

Railways has not enough   health inspectors

Kochi: There’s a severe shortage of Health Inspectors under the Railway Medical Department who are to conduct regular checks on the quality of food served in trains. For instance, under the Trivandrum division itself, there are only 33 Health Inspectors who have to deal with over 130 express trains daily.

“Inspecting the quality of food on trains comes as an additional duty for Heath Inspectors. Apart from this job, they have to ensure that railway stations and railway quarters are kept neat. So, only random checks are possible”, sources said.

Only 25 per cent of the food is actually prepared in pantry cars while the rest is purchased from IRCTC outlets at stations. The food becomes stale if the train is late or leftover food is served to the pantry cars.“The fact is that earlier, railway eateries were well received by the travelling public.

But ever since the IRCTC was formed, the focus was on profit and quality suffered. What needs to be done at this point is that the railways should directly run or control the operation of pantry cars and other food outlets in stations. Currently, only the food served in Rajdhani Express is of top quality”, they said.

“The Marusagar incident now shows that passengers’ complaints of bad quality food being served on long-distance trains is genuine.

A complete change in catering is necessary and the railways should directly control the process”,  said All Kerala Rail Users Association president Paul K.J.Manvettom.

Seven passengers travelling by the Ajmer-Ernakulam Marusagar Express who complained of uneasiness after consuming food on the train were treated at the General Hospital and Malik Dinar Hospital here on Saturday night. The passengers showed symptoms of food poisoning, hypertension, and low pulse rate, said a senior Railway official. The train reached Kasaragod station at 11.02 p.m.On being alerted from Mangalore about the commotion on the train, Railway officials had requisitioned the services of a team of physicians and paramedical staff from the hospitals. The District Medical Officer and the Railway Divisional Medical Officer from Mangalore, who reached here by the same train, and his counterpart from Kannur supervised the medical treatment.Three ambulances from the hospitals and the Fire and Rescue Services and police personnel were requisitioned at the station by 10 p.m., an hour ahead of the arrival of the train that reached here after halting at Mangalore Junction, to facilitate treatment to the affected persons.The seven affected passengers, including Mohammed Kutty (35), Mohammed Ali (35), both hailing from Perinthalmanna, and Abu Baker (64) from Mannarcaud, were admitted to the General Hospital and Malik Dinar Hospital. They were discharged by 3 a.m. and could continue their onward journey on the Ernakulam-bound Mangala Express from Delhi at 3.30 a.m., he said.

A few other affected passengers, in S-11 and S-12 coaches of the train, were administered first aid at the railway station. The train was allowed special stoppages at Kanhangad, Tanur, Pattambi as requested by the affected passengers, they said.

The passengers complained about the “rude” behaviour of the pantry car manager.

Piyush Aggarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, had promised to take up the matter with the Railway Ministry, he said.

The Railways have revised the schedule of Vasco-da-Gama and Velankani Weekly Express till September 16. South Western Railway, Bangalore Division, in a release said that Vasco-da-Gama-Yeshwanthpur-Velankani Weekly Express (17315) will leave Vasco-da-Gama at 2.10 p.m. on Monday instead of 9 a.m., and arrive at Yeshwanthpur on Tuesday at 5.15 a.m. instead of 11.10 p.m. It will leave Yeshwanthpur at 5.30 a.m. instead of 11.30 p.m. to reach Velankani at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday instead of 12.25 p.m.

Secunderabad railway station now has the distinction of being the first major station of the Indian Railways to have escalators on all 10 platforms and two lifts on both the entry points – the main entrance and the Bhoiguda entrance on the last platform.

The South Central Railway (SCR) authorities last week commissioned the seventh escalator on platform no. 4 and 5 and two lifts – one each on platform no. 1 and 10.

The SCR has spent about Rs. 6.60 crore towards establishing the seven escalators in the station, civil engineering works and electrical power supply arrangements etc. and Rs.98 lakh for setting up two lifts on the two main entrances.

While, the capacity of each lift is 20 persons, the rated carrying capacity of each escalator is 180 persons per minute.

On an average, it is estimated that around 43,000 passengers are using the escalators per day in the station.

These escalators and lifts facilitate easy and quick movement of passengers, especially the elderly, sick, and physically challenged persons from one platform to other, said a press release.

Meanwhile, the SCR authorities penalised about 7,200 persons in July 2013 for affecting cleanliness on the railway premises and nearly Rs. 14.61 lakh was realised from them towards penalties.

Of the 7,200 persons, 1,393 persons were detected in Secunderabad division, 573 persons in Hyderabad division, 2,393 persons in Vijayawada division, 716 persons in Nanded division, 1,306 persons in Guntakal division, and 836 persons in Guntur division.

In all, from April to July this financial year, 27,000 persons were caught for committing the offence of littering, spitting etc., on the railway premises and Rs. 54.32 lakh was realised towards penalties from them, according to a press release.

गत शनिवार को जाफराबाद-बाराबंकी रेल प्रखंड पर अलनाभारी रेलवे स्टेशन पर मालगाड़ी के डिब्बे पटरी से उतरने के 21 घंटे बाद रेलमार्ग संचालित हो सका। इस दौरान जहां दो दर्जन ट्रेनों को मार्ग परिवर्तित कर गुजारा गया। वहीं रेल यात्रियों के आरक्षित टिकटों की संपूर्ण धनराशि वापस कर दी गई।
गत शनिवार को अलनाभारी रेलवे स्टेशन के समीप मालगाड़ी के आठ डिब्बे पटरी से उतर गए थे। इसके बाद रेलमार्ग पर ट्रेनों का आवागमन बाधित हो गया था। पूरब दिशा से आ रही ट्रेनों को जाफराबाद सुल्तानपुर से होकर गुजारा गया। वहीं पश्चिम दिशा सेआ रही ट्रेनों को इसी मार्ग से भेजा गया। इस दौरान करीब दो दर्जन ट्रेनों का रूट परिवर्तित होने से यात्रियों को तमाम परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ा। स्टेशन पहुंचे यात्रियों को घंटों स्टेशन पर समय गुजारना पड़ा। वहीं रेल प्रशासन ने यात्रियों के आरक्षित टिकटों की संपूर्ण धनराशि वापस कर दी। रविवार को सुबह करीब नौ बजे मार्ग ठीक होने के बाद फैजाबाद की ओर से डाउन मुगलसराय पैसेंजर ट्रेन अकबरपुर स्टेशन पहुंची। इसके बाद साबरमती फिर अन्य ट्रेनों का संचालन शुरू हो सका। करीब 21 घंटे के बाद ट्रेनों का संचालन शुरू होने के बाद यात्रियों ने राहत की सांस ली।
