There was something melancholic, even ghostly about a train from Guwahati that rolled into platform six of the Bangalore City Railway Station at 9.30 p.m. in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Only a few days ago, this train was bound for Guwahati packed with people from the northeast fleeing the city. But on Wednesday evening, there was barely a soul on its return journey as it moved silently toward the shunting docks.

Including this one, there were three similar trains that returned from Guwahati on Wednesday after depositing nearly 20,000 panicked people at Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri. All were empty.

WELCOMING GROUP

Hoping that the returning trains would be carrying people from the northeast, 50 activists belonging to various human rights organisations as well as northeast groups had prepared to assemble at the railway station.

Activist Elavarthi Manohar and his supporters had hurriedly printed 2,000 visiting card-sized pamphlets for the “returning people”.

The pamphlets, titled North East Helpline, read: “Welcome to Bangalore. Do you need any assistance? We are here to help you. Please contact 9845967545/94882396178 [from] Civil Society and Humanitarian Organisations.”

When the train stopped at the station, several policemen started searching for people from the northeast. A young man, who had northeast features, became the centre of their attention. They were excited when he told them that he had boarded the train at Guwahati and was from Assam. But their excitement soon died when the man told them that he was actually a migrant worker from Bihar working in Assam but decided to come to Bangalore after all the communal tension there.

MANGALORE: Engineering branch of Palakkad railway divisional office bagged the first prize in the Pookala Malsaram (competition) conducted in Palakkad railway divisional office on Wednesday. While the personnel branch bagged the second prize, employees of general and accounts branches shared the third prize. Hindi department of Palakkad division organized this competition in which 12 teams representing various branches participated.

Piyush Agarwal, divisional railway manager, Poonam Agarwal, president, Southern Railway Women's Welfare Organisation, Palakkad, Mohan A Menon, additional divisional railway manager and all officers witnessed the pookalam created enthusiastically by the participating employees. Piyush Agarwal, DRM congratulated the winning teams and conveyed his onam greetings to all railway employees, their families and all the rail users.

The University of California team added that, because students tend to increasingly sacrifice sleep time for studying in the later years of education, this negative dynamic becomes more and more prevalent over time.

Those are the findings of a new study that focused on daily and yearly variations of students who sacrifice sleep to study. The research was conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and appears in the journal Child Development.

ALLAHABAD: Anticipating heavy rush of passengers during the festival season, railways has decided for plying of a tri-weekly special train between Patna and Anand Vihar (Delhi).

Train number 02393/02394 will leave Patna every Monday, Thursday and Saturday from August 20 to November 29, and leave Anand Vihar terminal every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from August 21 to October 30.

CHANDIGARH: As many as 20 chunks of private land, which have houses, shops and kiosks constructed on them, will be acquired for Metro Rail project in sectors 22, 34 and 43. The list of Project Affected People (PAP) includes 79 families, which will have to be displaced and rehabilitated elsewhere by the administration. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in its detailed project report (DPR) submitted to the UT, has pointed out, ''Among the affected families, only five own kiosks and rest are title land owners or tenants. A total of 2.73 ha of private land needs to be acquired apart from 32.52 ha government land.''

The Metro system will be underground in the city limits. For the station under Aroma Chowk, residential land (apart from cycle tracks and service roads) will be acquired; in Sector 34 the identified private property is both residential and commercial and in Sector 43 only land with residential structures will be required. ''The private land will be acquired for different purposes like running sections, stations and other infrastructure services for operations. Residences with ground floor only to up to four stories will have to be displaced. No squatters have been found on this land,'' added the report. DMRC has said that the alignment had been designed in such a way that bare minimum private land was required for construction and subsequent operations.

A socio-economic survey was conducted by DMRC in February and as part of the field studies, the profile of people who own structures on the identified land was also examined in detail. A total of 12 families were interviewed. It was found that the affected families have high education levels.

As the livelihood of the kiosk owners too depends on the space, they too would be compensated as part of the exercise. The DPR was submitted to UT administration last week and copies have also been sent to Punjab and Haryana.
