Agartala: If adequate fund is available, the Broad Gauge rail network is expected to touch Agartala by March, 2016 with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) working hard to complete the project on time.A team of NFR headed by Harpal Singh, the Chief Engineer of Construction has visited some ongoing projects in Tripura and review the progress with local rail officials. The NFR wants to extend BG facility to Agartala by March, 2016 provided fund is available, Singh told reporters after meeting with state government officials here on Monday. As per the plan, the on going BG conversion work in the Lumding-Silchar secton is expected to be over by March, 2015.Virtually lamenting over the shortage of fund, Singh said the NFR authority had sought Rs. 135 crore to speed up BG conversion work from Silchar to Agartala but the Centre has allocated only Rs. 5 crore though the work was declared as national project. He said the railway extension work from Agartala to Sabroom will be executed in two phases. “In the first phase, the work will be speeded up from Agartala to Udaipur while later it would be extended upto Sabroom. We are expecting to connect Udaipur by March 2015 and next year people of Sabroom are expected to see rail head”, he said.Singh, however, hinted at the target has been fixed keeping in mind of the availability of funds. “If the funds are available, the NFR will be able to meet the targets of different rail projects or else all the projects will get delayed”, he maintained. |

Irked over the inordinate delay in the execution of Palani-Erode (via Dharapuram and Kangayam in Tirupur district) new railway line project, the members of Erode-Dharapuram-Palani Railway Extension Citizens Committee have resolved to field candidates in the coming Lok Sabha elections. The decision was taken following a series of meetings held by the forum over the past few days.“It is a collective decision of the people in the sector, who will be the beneficiaries of the said rail project, to field candidates in the Lok Sabha seats in Tirupur, Erode and Dindigul districts in order to express our dissatisfaction over the apathy shown by the Railways to the project since allocating first instalment of financial allocation for the project in 2005,” Lingam Chinnasamy, general secretary of Erode-Dharapuram Railway Extension Citizens Committee, told The Hindu. The forum members had made various representations to the Railways in the last five years to expedite the execution.Mr. Chinnasamy pointed out that the plan for laying railway tracks through the sector was initially conceptualised way back in 1915 under a project aimed at providing railway connectivity between Palani and Samraj Nagar in Karnataka.“Due to some reasons, the project did not take off and the plans were then drawn in 1952 to lay new railway line between either Palani and Erode (via Dharapuram and Kangayam) or Palani and Tirupur. |
| ConfirmTicket | Ministry plans to introduce trams in mid-size cities on : September 10, 2013 - 15:56:04 PM |

New Delhi: The urban development ministry plans to introduce tramways in medium-size cities with populations of 1-4 million people in a throwback to the 1960s when trams were last seen on most Indian roads. The ministry will shortly begin a trial-run in a tier II city before taking the vintage-era transportation system to other cities and connecting the tramways with major bus and railway stations, urban development minister Kamal Nath said on Monday. Currently, Kolkata is the only city where trams are in use. Speaking at a conference on ‘Next generation tramways solutions’, Nath said tramways allow towns to capture the economic impulse and density generated by larger cities. Transportation is critical to India’s economic growth and a clean energy solution is essential to provide smart mobility in urban areas and allow freight to move easily, he said. “Operating costs are lower than for buses. A tram system will provide easy interoperability with first-mile/last-mile modes such as bikes and walking, existing transportation systems, as well as high speed rail and rapid transportation systems of the future,” Nath said. S.K. Lohia, officer on special duty at the urban development ministry, who was also at the conference, said the ministry will consider tramway projects under the second phase of its flagship Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission. The second phase of the programme will begin around the middle of the next year. Though transport projects like buses were sanctioned under the first phase, metro rail projects weren’t as they are very expensive. “Cities can start preparing detailed project reports for tramways as they will be financed under the second phase,” Lohia said. |
