| nikhilndls | Soon, Manimajra to get rail underbridge on : June 22, 2013 - 18:01:29 PM |
In what would provide relief to the residents from the traffic woes near Manimajra level crossing, the much- delayed rail underbridge (RUB) proposed for the area would get underway with the design being modified. It is now proposed that the RUB would be narrower than what had been perceived earlier. The proposal for construction of RUB was mooted more than two years back. The project had received the requisite approval from the Centre as well. However, inspections had shown that the site was in close proximity to residential as well as commercial buildings. Concerns were raised over the effect on the foundations of these buildings in case the underbridge was to be constructed. It has now been decided that the underbridge would be narrower than what was proposed earlier. This would ensure that the foundations of the buildings in question are not affected. While the Modern Housing Complex is near the level crossing, there is a market on one side as well. The crossing is a traffic bottleneck. Every time a train crosses, there are traffic jams on either side. The road on one side of the crossing is quite narrow. Once the gates of the crossing open, it takes time for the traffic flow to normalise. Commuters on the stretch have for long been demanding construction of the underbridge.UT Finance Secretary V K Singh says, "The rail underbridge would be narrower on the lines of some of those in Delhi. The design is being finalised and tenders for construction would be floated soon. The approval from the Centre for the project had been received earlier."Another advantage of construction of the underbridge would be that the commuters between Chandigarh and Panchkula would find an alternative road to travel on. At present, the Madhya Marg extension that joins Chandigarh and Panchkula bears a large share of the traffic. It causes congestion on this stretch. The road from Manimajra is not favoured due to the level crossing which proves to be a hurdle. The construction of another rail underbridge is going on at Mauli Jagran level crossing. It is expected to be completed this year. This would also ease out the traffic congestion on the Chandigarh-Panchkula stretch. The Railways had complained about the delay by the administration in widening of road that led to the underbridge. One of the reasons for delay was that shifting of pipelines that lay under the road was not undertaken on time. The RUB at Manimajra had been approved along with this. However, it was delayed due to technical problems. |

| puneetmafia | Cattle, not Indian gaurs, were knocked dead by trains: Forest officials on : June 22, 2013 - 18:01:53 PM |
CHANDRAPUR: Forest officials have refuted claims by wildlife activists that two Indian gaurs were run over by trains on Chanda Fort-Gondia railway line. Officials say that all the four carcasses found along the track recently belonged to cattle. Senior wildlife activists Yogeshwar Dudhpachare, Suresh Chopne and Prakash Kamble had spotted remains of four animals along the railway track running through Junona forest recently. They claimed that at least two carcasses belonged to Indian gaurs. Following death of a tiger cub and injury to another one after a train accident in Keljhar forest on April 14, it was decided to restrict speed of trains passing through Chanda Fort-Gondia railway line to 40 kmph and take preventive measures. Following a TOI report, foresters of Chandrapur range and protection wing on Sunday carried out a thorough search along the track. "Three carcasses belong to buffaloes while the fourth one is of a cow's calf. ACF (Protection) AJ Lohe along with Dudhpachare and Chopne visited the place and identified the carcasses," DFO (vigilance) Abhay Badkelwar claimed. However, Dudhpachare stated that the foresters have not taken samples to conduct forensic test. He stressed limiting train speed through the forest patch and filling natural waterholes along the railway line that attract wildlife during summer. Wildlife activist Kamble said, "Cattle move in herd, but in all four cases only single animal has died. This raises suspicion. The section where the accidents took place is rich with wildlife. Every animal death here needs to be investigated scientifically to ascertain identity," he stressed. |

| greatindian | Trains to run faster from July on : June 22, 2013 - 18:30:04 PM |
Thiruvananthapuram: The new railway timetable coming into effect from July 1 would witness the speeding up of over 80 trains running through the Thiruvananthapuram division. The running time will be reduced by five minutes to an hour. The maximum speed limit will be increased from 100 km per hour to 110 km.The new initiative will help the railways increase its line capacity and result in operating more trains through this sector. This is because the railways could not introduce new trains as the division lacked the capacity for the same. The trains will be speeded up with minimal change in the current timings.Sources said that there would also be an increase in the maximum speed on the Shoranur–Mangalore line during the same period.Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Agarwal told Deccan Chronicle that there are also plans to increase the running time of the trains further during the next one year. The infrastructure in the division would be improved to ensure this, Agarwal said. The Thiruvananthapuram railway division operates 80 express and 60 passenger trains daily carrying 2.6 lakh commuters daily. |
