LUCKNOW: In a brazen show of strength that took place in the heart of the city during peak hours, two groups involved in the railway contract business wielded firearms at each other inside the northern railway divisional railway manager's (DRM) office on Friday noon.According to reports around 1pm railway contractors Surendra Kumar Kaliya and Rakesh Singh Rana reached the railway office to submit tenders documents of contract related to building platform at Jaunpur railway station. The two sides came face to face and warned each other against going ahead with the tender process. Within moments it became free-for-all fight and goons started hitting each other with rifle butts and firearms. Hazratganj police reached the spot and separated the groups. Both Kaliya and Rana had sustained injuries.Rana alleged that Kaliya had torn the tender form and the bank draft he was carrying. A cross case was registered at Hazratganj police station subsequently by the two sides against each other. TNN The two contractors owe allegiance to two controversial heavyweights from east UP. In the past too several brawls have been witnessed in the same DRM office.

The Howrah-Yeshwantpur-Howrah Duronto express trains (12245/12246) have been augmented with one AC three-tier coach on a temporary basis. According to a release from South Western Railway, Howrah-Yeshwanthpur Duronto Express will run with an additional AC 3 tier coach temporarily on June 23 and 28. In the return direction, Yeshwanthpur-Howrah Duronto Express will run with one additional AC 3 tier coach on June 21, 25 and 30.

New Delhi: Railways has set up a task force to monitor the situation in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand and ensure smooth evacuation of stranded passengers.The task force will coordinate with the state government and arrange special trains to evacuate stranded passengers at hills.The four-member task force headed by Railway Board chairman Vinay Mittal will also ensure adequate arrangement of catering facilities and drinking water at stations for affected passengers.

NOIDA: The Noida Authority has invited public suggestions and objections for amendments in its building bylaws allowing development over 500 metres on either side of existing and proposed Metro corridors. A final decision will be taken by the end of the month after public hearings.Easing of coverage and height restrictions that will allow building properties with enhanced floor area ratio (FAR) of 0.5% was proposed in a joint board meeting of the three development Authorities of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway areas last month. Chairman and CEO Rama Raman said the 500m zone is aimed at carving out a mix of residential, commercial and public utilities along the Metro corridor."The amendment will be applicable to all categories of land use. The 0.5% FAR will be purchasable and our exiting formula for buying it will be applicable. Proceeds from the sale of additional FAR would be used to strengthen the resources of the Metro system," Raman said.Though the Authority is pitching hard for maximizing the land use pattern, organizing open houses to garner peoples' support is also part of their agenda. "Suggestions and views can be given in writing to the chief architect planner's office or by appearing personally between 9.30am and 6pm on working days at our office. Once the process is complete, the plan would be finally reviewed and implemented. We have already sent the proposal to the state government for approval," Rama Raman said.The Authority's aim is to increase population density along the Metro corridors and bring passengers within walking distance of stations. "We are encouraging mixed land use and higher floor area ratios along the Metro corridors to enhance economic activity. Through the proceeds we plan to mobilize resources to fund the future phases of the Metro besides funding the proposed special purpose vehicle (SPV) between Noida and Greater Noida - Noida Metro Rail Company - set up for constructing the proposed Metro corridors," Raman added.The proposed increase in the FAR is also expected to boost realty rates in both townships. Planning around transit lines is linked to economic development because of the scope to increase real estate value, increase tax revenues and generate jobs. Residential development around the Metro, especially if it is a part of a mixed land use strategy, is potential especially for developing cities like Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway areas, the CEO said.

Thiruvananthapuram: The new railway timetable coming into effect from July 1 would witness the speeding up of over 80 trains running through the Thiruvananthapuram division. The running time will be reduced by five minutes to an hour. The maximum speed limit will be increased from 100 km per hour to 110 km.The new initiative will help the railways increase its line capacity and result in operating more trains through this sector. This is  because the railways could not introduce new trains as the division lacked the capacity for the same. The trains will be speeded up with minimal change in the current timings.Sources said that there would also be an increase in the maximum speed on the Shoranur–Mangalore line  during the same period.Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Agarwal told Deccan Chronicle that there are also plans to increase the running time of the trains further during the next one year. The infrastructure in the division would be improved to ensure this, Agarwal said.The Thiruvananthapuram railway division operates 80 express and 60 passenger trains daily carrying  2.6 lakh commuters daily.
