| irmafia | ‘Twin’ Ticket Collectors a head-turner at Pune railway station on : June 22, 2013 - 18:30:47 PM |

If you're going to Pune railway station, chances are you'll be greeted at the gate by a tall, bespectacled young girl who'll ask for your ticket. This is a fairly ordinary part of Aleena Zacharias' job as a senior ticket collector (TC) and people usually hand her their tickets without much ado. It's only when they look up however, that they are surprised by a mirror image of her standing just a few feet away, with the same athletic stance, wearing the same brown salwar-kurta uniform, and even the same pink watch and white sneakers. This too, is a fairly regular occurrence, says Aleena, whose twin sister, Anila is also a senior TC at the station."People get confused all the time when they see us. Once there was this man who saw Anila at one end of the station, and then saw me at the other end. He was so puzzled, he came and asked me how I got there so quickly," she says. The sisters, both 23 years old, moved to Pune about three years ago from Kannur, in Kerala, and have been working at the station ever since. "In the beginning, everyone would be surprised when they saw us. Now everyone who works at the station, and even most of the regular passengers know that we are twins," says Anila. In fact, there is only one small difference that can help tell them apart - Aleena's face is slightly longer and narrower than Anila's - a difference that is missed by most people. But this confusion has been a constant part of their lives, right from their childhood. "Our teachers were always confused between us. In 12 th standard, Anila made a mistake but the teacher came and scolded me instead. Later she found out that I was not Anila," says Aleena. It didn't help of course, that their parents dressed both of them in identical clothes. To this day, the sisters continue to wear identical clothes even when they are not on duty.In Kerala, the girls grew up with a university-level volleyball player for a father, and they picked up the game early, in Class V. They grew up to play volleyball professionally for Kerala's state team. Little did they know that their common passion for the sport would continue to keep them together in the future. When they went to play a match in Nagpur, they were spotted by another coach who recruited them to play for the Central Railways team, also offering them a job with the Railways under the sports quota. Ask her what they'll do if they're separated in the future, Aleena says, "We cannot even think of being apart. We had got separate jobs in Kerala but we refused because we wanted to be together."Their normal working hours are from 8 am to 4 pm, but because they also have to fit four hours of volleyball practice everyday, they collect tickets until 12 and practise volleyball for four hours. Here too their identical looks and similar-sounding names has caused some chaos. "The coach would want to call Alina but he would call me instead, or vice versa. For the first year, the team was a bit confused," says Anila. They have hopes of being together even later, as Aleena says. "Not that we're thinking about it right now, but our parents have said that they'll try to look for twin brothers as grooms for us." |

New Delhi: Three days after nearly two thousand commuters were stuck when a Delhi Metro train broke down inside a tunnel, the train operators have been directed to speed up the evacuation process in such incidents, Delhi Metro chief Mangu Singh said Friday.Receiving the preliminary report and feedback from the public, Mangu Singh said: "In case passengers are stranded in the underground tunnel without lights and proper ventilation for more than ten minutes, the Metro operational managers should initiate evacuation of passengers."Metro operational managers were asked to ensure adequate tunnel lighting and ventilation during evacuation, and that any natural obstructions are painted with luminous paint. "The tunnel lighting in the underground tunnel will be reoriented by the Metro electrical engineers so that a clear view of the underground passage is available to the commuters in an evacuation scenario," said Metro executive director (corporate communications) Anuj Dayal. On Tuesday at 9.24 a.m. an eight-coach Metro train carrying 1,791 passengers from Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon was stranded in mid-section between Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro stations, as the emergency brake did not get released after it was applied. However, the passengers, who were stuck for over an hour, pushed open the emergency exit and came out on the track, thus delaying rescue operations as well as passage on the opposite track. "In such emergency situations the operational managers are asked to evacuate passengers if they are not able to rectify the fault through local trouble shooting," Dayal said.Soon after the incident, the Metro engineers were asked to examine the feasibility of having a secondary backup system for train lighting and ventilation in an emergency situation to ensure that lights and ventilation are always "on". "Such a failure has happened for the first time and a team of engineers from Delhi Metro and the manufacturer are investigating to avoid recurrence of such incident," Dayal added.Delhi Metro makes over 2,800 trips a day, covering about 70,000 km and carrying around 2.2 million passengers on working days. |

| railgenie | Mumbai : Civic body to inspect 150 railway culverts on : June 22, 2013 - 20:00:51 PM |
|
To stave off chaos on the impending high tide days this month from June 23 to 28, the civic body has decided to inspect flooding spots that fall under the jurisdiction of railways. There are 150 culverts in the railway premises that are desilted by the railway authorities before every monsoon for which the civic body bears the costs. But despite paying the railways Rs2.5 crore this year for desilting the drains, railway tracks continued to be flooded and suburban trains were disrupted on all days that received heavy rain in the past two weeks. The directions were issued by municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte, who also heads the Greater Mumbai Disaster Management Authority. Kunte held a monsoon review meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss the problems faced by civic officials due to the outpour on Sunday. The meeting was also attended by railway officials. "We will reexamine the flooding spots in railway premises and study the drainage system to identify problem areas," Kunte said. A joint inspection would be conducted by officials from the storm water drains department and those from the railways to prevent flooding on tracks. On Sunday, services running on Central and Harbour railway routes were suspended for as long as four hours leaving lakhs of commuters stranded. Areas that faced major flooding in the past ten days and disrupted suburban trains on the Central Railway route i nclude Masjid, Sandhurst Road, Currey Road among others till Sion. Civic officials, however, said the flooding on railway tracks was primarily because of the inadequate desilting work carried out by the railways. |
| riteshexpert | Noida to develop areas along old and new Metro corridors on : June 22, 2013 - 20:00:58 PM |
|
NOIDA: The Noida Authority has invited public suggestions and objections for amendments in its building bylaws allowing development over 500 metres on either side of existing and proposed Metro corridors. A final decision will be taken by the end of the month after public hearings.Easing of coverage and height restrictions that will allow building properties with enhanced floor area ratio (FAR) of 0.5% was proposed in a joint board meeting of the three development Authorities of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway areas last month. Chairman and CEO Rama Raman said the 500m zone is aimed at carving out a mix of residential, commercial and public utilities along the Metro corridor."The amendment will be applicable to all categories of land use. The 0.5% FAR will be purchasable and our exiting formula for buying it will be applicable. Proceeds from the sale of additional FAR would be used to strengthen the resources of the Metro system," Raman said.Though the Authority is pitching hard for maximizing the land use pattern, organizing open houses to garner peoples' support is also part of their agenda. "Suggestions and views can be given in writing to the chief architect planner's office or by appearing personally between 9.30am and 6pm on working days at our office. Once the process is complete, the plan would be finally reviewed and implemented. We have already sent the proposal to the state government for approval," Rama Raman said. The Authority's aim is to increase population density along the Metro corridors and bring passengers within walking distance of stations. "We are encouraging mixed land use and higher floor area ratios along the Metro corridors to enhance economic activity. Through the proceeds we plan to mobilize resources to fund the future phases of the Metro besides funding the proposed special purpose vehicle (SPV) between Noida and Greater Noida - Noida Metro Rail Company - set up for constructing the proposed Metro corridors," Raman added. The proposed increase in the FAR is also expected to boost realty rates in both townships. Planning around transit lines is linked to economic development because of the scope to increase real estate value, increase tax revenues and generate jobs. Residential development around the Metro, especially if it is a part of a mixed land use strategy, is potential especially for developing cities like Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway areas, the CEO said. |
