LUCKNOW: In a brazen show of strength that took place in the heart of the city during peak hours, two groups involved in the railway contract business wielded firearms at each other inside the northern railway divisional railway manager's (DRM) office on Friday noon.According to reports around 1pm railway contractors Surendra Kumar Kaliya and Rakesh Singh Rana reached the railway office to submit tenders documents of contract related to building platform at Jaunpur railway station. The two sides came face to face and warned each other against going ahead with the tender process. Within moments it became free-for-all fight and goons started hitting each other with rifle butts and firearms. Hazratganj police reached the spot and separated the groups. Both Kaliya and Rana had sustained injuries.Rana alleged that Kaliya had torn the tender form and the bank draft he was carrying. A cross case was registered at Hazratganj police station subsequently by the two sides against each other. TNN The two contractors owe allegiance to two controversial heavyweights from east UP. In the past too several brawls have been witnessed in the same DRM office.

MYSORE: Two infrastructure projects, which had been pending for long, have made it to the list of priorities of new district minister V Sreenivasa Prasad. Accordingly, four-laning of Mysore-Nanjangud Road and doubling of Mysore-Bangalore railway line will now get attention.While the upgrading a stretch of NH-212, connecting Mysore to Nanjangud, will help both tourists and industrial growth, the double line between the IT City and the tourist hub will improve connectivity.Prasad, who is also revenue minister, on Friday said that the delay in land acquisition in Mandya district has slowed down track-doubling work. A part of land required for laying a new line at Maddur was caught in legal dispute. "We have funds to acquire the land. I'm convening a meeting of Mysore and Mandya DCs to address the issue," Prasad told reporters after inaugurating district minister's office at Public Offices abutting Mysore Palace. The project is being delayed, as it needs shifting of an armory from Tipu Sultan's period at Srirangapatna railway station. "It has also been okayed now," he stated.

South Western Railway, which is building bridges across Cauvery river to lay the tracks, has completed track doubling on Mysore-Naganahalli and Bangalore-Ramanagaram lines. The missing link is delaying completion of the rail project, and the same is subsequently is adding to pressure on Mysore-Bangalore Expressway. While the railway has increased trains between Mysore and Bangalore in the last five years, the extension of better services hinges on the completion of the missing link.

The minister said that he will fix the problem arising out of land acquisition issue. Prasad, who represents Nanjangud, said the work on four-laning of Mysore-Nanjangud stretch will commence in two months. Pointing at the appointment of senior Congress leader from Karnataka Oscar Fernandes as Union minister for transport, road and highways, Prasad said it will help the Congress government put the project back on track. National Highways Authority of India has approved the four-laning work even as there are demands to realign the stretch to facilitate the expansion of workable Mysore airport. Airports Authority of India is seeking to extend the runway that cuts across Mysore-Nanjangud Road.

However, Prasad said the four-laning work will be taken up now, which could delay the expansion of the airport.

VIVEKA SMARAKA ISSUE

The district minister gave clear indications that century-old Kannada school could be handed over to Ramakrishna Mission to build a memorial for Swami Vivekananda. Though he sought to blame BJP for the mess surrounding the one-acre property attached to New Model Training School at Devaraja Mohalla, Prasad indicated that there are problems to take back the property, which is transferred to the religious organization. "I will consult legislators and other elected representatives to save the school from closure," he stated.

More than 150 years after it was built in 1856, the country’s oldest surviving railway station may soon be demolished.Southern Railway is likely to raze the old Royapuram station in north Chennai, a heritage structure, for development work.Earlier this week, at a meeting of the Heritage Conservation Committee, Southern Railway officials asked Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to remove the station from the list of heritage buildings in the city. “Buildings that are tagged as heritage structures cannot be demolished, and no major work can take place in them. Royapuram station’s deletion from the heritage list will make it easier for it to be demolished,” said a senior CMDA official.According to Southern Railway officials, a number of development projects have been planned on the 72-acre station premises, including the laying of two rail lines that will connect stations in south Tamil Nadu with the rest of the country. Another project is the creation of a passenger terminal next to Central and Egmore stations, as well as a loco shed. However, archaeologists and conservationists are up in arms over the proposal. Archaeologists said the Royapuram station was probably the oldest surviving station in the entire sub-continent, as the original structures of Bombay and Thane stations no longer existed.

“The station may not have any major cultural significance, but it is historically very important. Even partial demolition of the building will ruin one of out finest heritage structures,” said K. Kalpana, a conservation architect.  The Royapuram station was inaugurated on July 1, 1856 by the then Governor of Madras Presidency, Lord Harris. The first services to be operated at the station were between Royapuram and Ambur and between Royapuram and Tiruvallur – a distance of 173 km and 52 km respectively.

Built by Madras Railway Company, Royapuram was selected as the site as it was on the edge of a settlement of British traders and locals near Fort St. George. For the next 17 years, Royapuram was the only railway station in the city until Madras Central Station became operational in 1873.

The Howrah-Yeshwantpur-Howrah Duronto express trains (12245/12246) have been augmented with one AC three-tier coach on a temporary basis. According to a release from South Western Railway, Howrah-Yeshwanthpur Duronto Express will run with an additional AC 3 tier coach temporarily on June 23 and 28. In the return direction, Yeshwanthpur-Howrah Duronto Express will run with one additional AC 3 tier coach on June 21, 25 and 30.

The chances of Sabarimala figuring on the railway map have diminished with the Railways estimating that the new alignment of Sabari Rail, the Rs.1,566-crore Angamaly-Sabarimala railway project, will incur an additional expenditure of Rs.350 crore.....
