Northern Railway will run two pairs of special trains, 04911/04912 between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Beas and 04917/04918 between Saharanpur and Beas.

In order to evacuate the passengers stranded in Uttrakhand due to floods in Utterakhand hills Northern Railway has made following arrangements:
·Such passengers who were stranded in the flood affected area of Uttarakhand are being evacuated from Haridwar and Dehradun free of charge.
·On 20.06.2013 Moradabad Division of Northern Railway operated two special trains one from Haridwar to Lucknow and the other Haridwar to Delhi and cleared around2700 passengers yesterday.
·Two special trains have been arranged to depart from Haridwar to Mumbai Central and other from Haridwar to Lucknow today (21.06.2013). Mumbai flood Relief Special train planned to depart from Haridwar at 8.15 p.m. and the Lucknow special will depart from Haridwar at 6.30 p.m. today.
·A special train has been arranged from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Secunderabad to depart from Hazrat Nizamuddin at 9.30 p.m. today which will arrive at Secunderabad at 4.00 a.m. on 23.06.2013.
·Additional coaches have also been arranged which are being attached to the regular trains to accommodate the flood affected passengers to proceed for their destinations.
·The officers are camping at Rishikesh, Dehradun & Haridwar stations and co-ordinating with Authorities of Sate Govt. and ensuring proper dispersal of passengers and also monitoring availability of passenger conveniences at these stations
·Arrangement for revalidation of tickets of those passengers who were stranded in flood affected areas of Uttrakhand even the expiry of validity of tickets.
·Special arrangements have been made at these stations to refund the fare against the tickets of flood affected passengers. To refund the fare against such tickets at these station Refund Rules have been relaxed so that affected passengers may get refund against their tickets or revalidate for undertaking their journey to their destination on the same ticket.
·PRS (Computerized Passenger Reservation) Counters at Haridwar, Dehradun & Rishikesh have been made functional round the clock. Arrangements for opening of 10 extra counters at short notice have also been made.
·Doctors and Paramedical staff have been deployed with adequate provisions to meet with any exigencies at these stations round the clock.
·Elaborative arrangements for catering, medical assistance etc. have been made at Delhi Jn., New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway stations for those passengers who are being cleared from Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun. General second class coaches are being earmarked for stranded passengers for onward journey.Senior officers have been deployed at these stations who are managing dispersal of stranded passengers by convenient trains.
·NGO’s have also joined hands with railway authorities at these stations and providing food, water bottles, etc. to the passengers.

COIMBATORE: People living close to Peelamedu railway station in the city had a scare when four empty wagons of a goods train that were being pushed along a shunting line by a group of loading workers at the station derailed and almost fell over the houses located close to the railway line. A disaster was avoided only because the bogies rammed an electric post and stopped moving.On Friday morning, the goods train had arrived at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown next to the Peelamedu station carrying rice bags from Hosur. The rice bags were downloaded by the godown workers and the rake with four wagons detached from the engine. Later at noon, about 15 workers started to push the rake along the shunting line to park them at a convenient location. However, as they started pushing, the rake gained speed and ran for almost a kilometre before derailing near a residential area. If not for the electric post that came in the way, the wagons could have collapsed on the houses situated close to the railway line.

According to Peelamedu railway station master S Thomas, no coaches or wagons are to be moved without being attached to an engine. "We have sought an explanation from the FCI authorities. We are taking stock of the damages. A compensation amount would be charged from the FCI and its employees would be strictly warned against pushing empty wagons through the track,'' he said.

Local residents said FCI workers routinely push empty bogies through the tracks to park them at convenient locations. "The electric post saved us. Imagine if the wagons had collapsed over the houses. There must be more vigilance on the part of both the railways and the FCI. Why should the railways allow wagons to left on the station without the engine?'' asked S Sivasubrahmanyam, a local resident."There was an element of luck in the incident. The wagons were stopped by the electric post. As it was on the shunting line, the incident did not affect the running of passenger trains. But the incident exposes the callous way authorities allow people to manage bogies of goods trains,'' said R Raveendran, member, Coimbatore Railway Struggle Committee and a native of Peelamedu. "We will bring up the issue before senior officials. The FCI must be more serious about running its business,'' added M Jameel Ahmed of Railway Consultative Committee.

Proposed line would cut Kanhangad - B'lore distance by 309 kms

After the new government took charge in Karnataka, Kerala is once again pushing for the long proposed Kanhangad-Kaniyur railway line which, if materialised will drastically cut short the distance between North Kerala and Bangalore.The proposed 71 km line has two phases, Kanjangad-Panathur (40 km) and Panathur-Kaniyur (31 km) and the survey for the first phase was completed in 2009, and the same has been approved by the department of Railways. The remaining 31 km comes in Karnataka and so far the state has not evinced much interest in the matter.Kasargod MP P Karunakaran, has sent a letter to the Karnataka Minister-in-charge of Railways, requesting to look into the matter at the earliest as it is a much beneficial route. “The railway department itself has approved that the line is highly feasible and cost effective. It will cater to scores of students pursuing studies in Bangalore as well as professionals and trading communities. It will  also provide fillip to the tourism sector connecting Talacauvery, Subrahmanya, Bekal and Ranipuram,” he told Deccan Herald.The MP was of the opinion that once Karnataka completes the survey, the line will find it's place in the next Railway Budget. The issue was also been discussed with MP Jayaprakash Hegde, who is the member of Railway Parliamentary Consultative Committee. MP P Karunakaran said that he had sought appointment with Karnataka Minister's to discuss the matter in detail.

It was taking 12 hours to reach the destination. Kannur-Yeshwantpur route via Mangalore also takes same time. However, with the proposed line, Bangalore will be only 348 kms away from Kanhangad. With this, one can reach Bangalore within six to seven hours.

From Kaniyur, the proposed line will join Mangalore-Hassan railway line and that leads to Bangalore. The Kerala government has already agreed to shoulder the cost of the land acquisition for laying the track between Kanhangad and Panathur.

As per the preliminary survey, Kanhangad-Panathur route will have one bridge, six railway stations and two-km tunnel. “The proposed line can also be connected through Sullia. From Panathur, there is a PWD road upto Sullia, which passes through Kallapally, Bedadukka and Alatti. The proposed line can be laid parallel to the existing road. A State Highway is passing through this land towards Subrahmanya, Kaniyur and Puttur. As it is a public road, the proposed line can be laid parallel to the existing road,” says Kochikunnel.

Environmental concern

It is learned that environmental concern is the stumbling block for conducting the survey along Panathur-Kaniyur line. Though Kerala officials claim that only less than a kilometer of forest near Sullia will be affected, sources in the Karnataka Forest department say the affecting area could be considerably large.

Apart from this line, Kerala government is all set to approach Karnataka to get a nod for Nilambur-Nanchangode and Thalassery-Mysore railway lines.

Recently, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has categorically announced that Nilambur-Nanchangode would be the next railway line that the State would start work soon.

In what would provide relief to the residents from the traffic woes near Manimajra level crossing, the much- delayed rail underbridge (RUB) proposed for the area would get underway with the design being modified. It is now proposed that the RUB would be narrower than what had been perceived earlier.The proposal for construction of RUB was mooted more than two years back. The project had received the requisite approval from the Centre as well. However, inspections had shown that the site was in close proximity to residential as well as commercial buildings. Concerns were raised over the effect on the foundations of these buildings in case the underbridge was to be constructed.It has now been decided that the underbridge would be narrower than what was proposed earlier. This would ensure that the foundations of the buildings in question are not affected. While the Modern Housing Complex is near the level crossing, there is a market on one side as well.The crossing is a traffic bottleneck. Every time a train crosses, there are traffic jams on either side. The road on one side of the crossing is quite narrow. Once the gates of the crossing open, it takes time for the traffic flow to normalise. Commuters on the stretch have for long been demanding construction of the underbridge.UT Finance Secretary V K Singh says, "The rail underbridge would be narrower on the lines of some of those in Delhi. The design is being finalised and tenders for construction would be floated soon. The approval from the Centre for the project had been received earlier."Another advantage of construction of the underbridge would be that the commuters between Chandigarh and Panchkula would find an alternative road to travel on. At present, the Madhya Marg extension that joins Chandigarh and Panchkula bears a large share of the traffic. It causes congestion on this stretch. The road from Manimajra is not favoured due to the level crossing which proves to be a hurdle.The construction of another rail underbridge is going on at Mauli Jagran level crossing. It is expected to be completed this year. This would also ease out the traffic congestion on the Chandigarh-Panchkula stretch. The Railways had complained about the delay by the administration in widening of road that led to the underbridge. One of the reasons for delay was that shifting of pipelines that lay under the road was not undertaken on time. The RUB at Manimajra had been approved along with this. However, it was delayed due to technical problems.

PUNE: The Government Railway Police (GRP), Pune recently arrested a suspect for allegedly stealing luggage of women travelling in long distance trains. The police have recovered gold ornaments and two cell phones totally worth Rs 1.90 lakh from him. The GRP said the suspect is Sharanappa Pandurang Walher alias Kannadi (19) a resident of Timmapur Chowk, Ambikanagar, Gulbarga, Kanrnataka, currently residing at Pune. The GRP team led by assistant police inspector Mahendra Bagade made the arrest. Bagade said that in the month of March this year, the suspect had stolen a bag of the wife of Shaikh Abdul Nabi of Gulbarga at Pune railway station. Nabi's wife was travelling in Rajkot-Sikandarabad express. "The train had reached Pune railway station around 11.30 pm and left the station after half-an-hour. The suspect had entered into the compartment and had fled with the bag," Bagade said. He said that the superintendent of police (GRP) Pratapsinh Patankar had recently issued orders to launch a special drive to nab the suspects committing thefts in the long distance trains. "We laid a trap and nabbed Walher from a train," Bagade said. During the sustained interrogation he admitted his involvement in the theft in the month of March. "We have recovered gold ornaments, two cell phones totally worth Rs 1.90 lakh from him," Bagade added. The investigating team comprised police constables Sanjay Sonavane, Amardip Salunke, Santosh Chandane, Rupesh Pawar and Dattatreya More.

ALLAHABAD: To meet the unprecedented catastrophe in Uttarakhand, and evacuate the passengers stranded there, Indian railways has galvanized into action.

Minister of railways, Mallikarjun Kharge, has given directions to railway board to arrange special trains to evacuate stranded persons from the calamity hit areas.

In this connection, special trains have been arranged, which have started running from Haridwar. On June 20, two specials were run to Lucknow and Delhi respectively. More specials are being planned as per the requirements. Three specials are planned for June 21. One is from Haridwar to Lucknow at 6.30 pm, second is from Haridwar to Mumbai at 8.15 pm and third is from New Delhi to Secundrabad at 9.30 pm.

In coordination with government of Uttarakhand, Indian railways has decided to carry stranded passengers free of cost to their respective destinations. Railway administration is ensuring that sufficient empty coaching rakes are sent to Haridwar/Dehradun. A Task Force has been set up at the level of railway board under chairman, railway board, Vinay Mittal to monitor the situation. Northern railway and its Muradabad division have fully geared up for making appropriate arrangements (Uttarakhand falls mostly under Muradabad Railway Division of Northern Railway).
