“Politicians seem to have no time for the problems of passengers”

The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway (E. Co. R) has bagged the unique distinction of being among the select few Divisions in the country to have crossed the 50 MT mark in freight loading by achieving originating loading of 51.54 MT and freight revenue of Rs.5275.83 crore during the just concluded financial year.So, what’s the incentive it got for its consistent performance year after year? “Diversion of trains, diversion of facilities like Wagon Repair Shop (WRS) to Odisha, reduction of the quota of berths … and the list seems endless,” say former railway union leaders, Railway Zone Sadhana Samithi leaders and others, who have been consistently fighting against the ‘injustice’ being done to Waltair Division.Unfortunately, our people’s representatives have already gone into election mode for the 2014 general elections and seem to have no time for the problems of railway passengers.On April 10, ECoR announced the augmentation of AC coaches on 14 pairs of trains.There is hardly anything to cheer about for the people of Waltair Division. Only one train from Visakhapatnam to Korba was given an additional III AC coach, while the remaining AC coaches have been augmented to trains originating from Bhubaneswar and Puri. Coaches are generally added to trains, which have huge wait lists over and above the capacity of the class of coach. A large number of people prefer AC to Sleeper Class during summer.

There are about 16 trains originating from Visakhapatnam and 47 AC coaches are at the disposal of the Vizag base. The coach composition of most of these trains remained the same since their introduction.

Representatives of various organisations fighting against the injustice to Waltair Division allege that the augmentation of AC coaches was so chosen so as to avoid Visakhapatnam in most cases and some were not even running through AP.

It’s high time our MP s wake up at least now and live up to the aspirations of the people, whom they represent.

The 122nd  Birth Anniversary of the Babasaheb Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was celebrated at Southern Railway Headquarters o­n 15.4.2013 in a befitting manner.  Shri Rakesh Misra, General Manager and other Senior railway officers and  employees of Southern Railway, paid floral tributes to Dr. Ambedkar. Smt. Latha Priyakumar, Hon’ble Member, National Commission for Scheduled Castes was the Chief Guest of the function.  Prizes to employees and wards of employees for essay and quiz competitions were distributed by Smt. Latha Priyakumar. Shri N. Swaminathan, Chief Personnel Officer, welcomed the gathering.  Shri Rakesh Misra, General Manager,  during his address lauded the services of Dr.B.R. Ambedkar, to the society.  Shri V. Pitchairaju, retired Chief Personnel Officer, Southern Railway, presented poetry o­n Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Officers and Employees of Southern Railway participated in the function.  The function was concluded with the vote of thanks by    Shri K. Manickaraj, Senior Personnel Officer.

Celebrating the 160th anniversary of passenger train service in the country without much fanfare, officials from the South Western Railways (SWR), on Tuesday said that the double-decker AC train between Bangalore and Chennai, which was to add to its achievements, could not be commissioned before mid-May.

The train, pegged to be South India’s first double-decker AC train, was first brought to Bangalore on a trial run on February 24 and was supposed to be commissioned by the end of last month.

The commissioning of the train was announced in the 2012-13 Railway Budget. An SWR official said: “There has been no decision on when the commissioning is scheduled.”

Another official said that the commissioning has been postponed mainly due to the model code on conduct for the Assembly elections. It is likely to be done in mid-May.
“We have a series of functions marking the annual Railway week which is generally publicised, as it involves showcasing our achievements. But permission to do it has been denied this year and we are having a quiet celebration,” the official said

15 new EMU trains have been introduced in Churchgate-Dahanu Road Section.2 shuttle trains running between Dahanu Road and Borivali have been replaced by EMU and extended upto Churchgate. 2 EMU services running between Dadar and Virar have been extended till Dahanu Road and 1 EMU services running between Churchgate and Virar has also been extended to Dahanu Road. Apart from above, 4 MEMU services which were running between Dahanu Road and Virar have been extended upto Dadar. The regular run of newly introduced EMU services will commence from 17/04/2013.

Thane: Palghar MP Baliram Jadhav who proudly claimed that the Dahanu-Churchgate suburban local services is his achievement, promptly ended up violating two rules immediately after the Union Railway Minister and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan inaugurated the service on Tuesday. Jadhav was all cheers and waved as he travelled standing on the footboard of the train, committing the first violation.He also set a precedent by travelling in the ladies' bogie of the train from Dahanu and was prominently seen waving at the crowd which cheered him. The railways kept up its tradition of running late and the suburban local train which was scheduled to leave the station at 10.10 am, ended up leaving only at 10.49 am, almost 30 minutes late.

New Delhi: Around 2.6 lakh railwaymen have started a clamour for ending a 100-year-old practice prevalent in the Indian Railways that, they say, is a needless hangover from the British era. Citing "dignity of labour", they have urged Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal to put an end to the archaic rule of "roll call" for trackmen — known as track maintainers — to mark attendance, saying it is humiliating in this day and age.Every morning, while their fellow railwaymen and officers mark their attendance by signing in a register, trackmen have to stand before a gangman and mark their presence in a roll call.In their letter to the minister, they have cited the fact that all the other similar cadres in the railways whose nature of work mostly involve manual labour have long since started signing for attendance, which, they have said, is the "dignified" way."This outdated system has never been considered for change by the ministry. The educated track maintainers feel humiliated and insulted while in other departments the system of signing the attendance register is already in vogue," the letter written through the National Federation for Indian Railwaymen says.The demand has somewhat flummoxed policymakers in the Railway Board, who never anticipated that an innocuous practice of roll call could spark such indignation. For the Railways, the issue is also one of utility. Prior to 1992, the job of trackmen did not require educational qualification. As a result, a large number of trackmen is still unlettered and hence, unable to sign. "The system of roll calling helps during inspections to see that attendance is not misrepresented. Why change a system that works fine?" said a senior official.The trackmen have argued that over the past two decades, the Railways have implemented minimum qualification of eighth pass and then 10th pass, resulting in a larger number of track maintainers who are able to read and write.These people want to mark their attendance just like everyone else.
The matter requires a policy decision and Bansal will take a call, one way or another.
