Despite recent renovation, much remains to be done to make Bangalore East station passenger friendly. Notwithstanding regular use by the city’s eastern residents, the station, located on Pottery Road, falls short in the basic infrastructure department.

James Wright has been a regular at the Bangalore East Railway Station since the early ‘90s, but the 70-year-old Hennur resident hasn’t seen much change in the station’s conditions over the three decades.

“Hardly anything changed until recently — the station was unusable,” he said, while booking a ticket to Chennai for himself and his wife at the station.

Despite its regular use by the city’s eastern residents, the station, located on Pottery Road, falls short in the basic infrastructure department. Only as recently as 2011, after a renovation, did it get additional booking counters, for instance. Despite the addition, the counters are insufficient: early mornings see heavy crowds, regular commuters said, citing hourlong waits. Toilets are functional, but poorly maintained, with erratic water supply.

Sujata (55) carries two bundles of greens with her across the footbridge every day, to sell in Fraser Town. Her limbs have begun to protest, she says, but there is no other option: on a far end, a single pedestrian footbridge connects the station’s two long platforms.

“Right now, there are no plans for the station,” said Sudhanshu Mani, Divisional Railway Manager of the South Western Railway’s Bangalore Division. He said that while express trains cannot be stopped at the station, passenger trains do halt. “Besides, long-distance trains halt at Krishnarajapuram and Bangalore Cantonment.”

But regular commuters say there is a need for more trains to halt here. “A lot of people from this area travel to Chennai, in particular,” N.S. Ravi, president of the Bharatinagar Residents Forum, said. “We understand the Shatabdi cannot stop. But what about the Brindavan or Lalbagh trains?”

Unlike other stations such as Yeshwantpur or Bangalore Cantonment, the Bangalore East station does not have direct public transport connectivity; train commuters must walk down from the nearest bus-stops — from ITC, Davis Road or Mosque Road.

The station receives a fair amount of footfall, as it is the nearest railway link for people from Banaswadi, Cox Town, Kalyananagar and Jeevanahalli.

Besides, there is hardly any commercial activity on the platforms: till recently, there wasn’t even a single stall on the premises, recalls Mr. Wright.

But most pressing of all, reiterate many regular commuters, is the need for more booking counters. “Some of us with computers can go online and book, but what about the common man?” says Mr. Ravi.

यात्री का सिर फोड़ा

तृतीय पंथियों  ( हिजड़ों )  ने 3 जुलाई को कुर्ला टर्मिनस सेरवाना होनेवाली राजेन्द्रनगर एक्सप्रेस के एक यात्री पर हमला कर दिया था, जिससे 36 वर्षीय मोहम्मद किताबउल्ला का सिर फूट गया. मोहम्मद किताबउल्ला की शिकायत पर कुर्ला जीआरपी नेराहुल लखन घोष उर्फ खुशबू तथा कैल अहमद उर्फ शायरा को गिरफ्तार कर लिया है.

यात्रियों के साथ करते हैं बदसलूकी

10 रुपए सेकम देने पर तृतीय पंथी ( हिजड़े )  यात्रियों के साथ बदसलूकी करते हैं. और तो और यात्रियों के पास 10 रुपए चेंज न होने की दशा में 50 या 100 रुपए की नोट छीन लेते हैं.

लांघ जाते हैं बेशर्मी की सारी सीमाएं

परिवार केसाथ यात्रा करनेवालेयात्रियों के लिए तृतीय पंथी बड़ी मुसीबत बनकर उभरे हैं. जरा सी बात पर अश्लील हरकतें करने लगते हैं, जिससे बड़ी शर्मिंदगी महसूस होती है.

एक डिब्बे का 100 रुपए

यात्रियों के साथ जोर-जबरदस्ती करने के मामले में पूछ जाने पर मंगला नामक एक तृतीय पंथी( हिजड़े ) ने कहा कि आरपीएफ वाले 100 रुपए पहले ही ले लेते हैं, उसके बाद जनरल डिब्बे में घुसने की इजाजत देते हैं. और तो और जब तृतीय पंथी यात्रियोंसेवसूली करनेलगतेहैं, तब गाड़ी में तैनात सुरक्षा बल केजवान अगलेछोर पर जाकर खड़े हो जाते हैं.

बैक डोर से इंट्री

प्लेटफार्म पर गाड़ी लगतेही तृतीय पंथी बैक डोर (अपोजिट साइड) से डिब्बे में घुसकर शौचालयों में छुप जाते हैं, जैसे ही गाड़ी स्टेशन से छूटती है. शौचालय सेनिकलकर यात्रियों से वसूली शुरू कर देते हैं. सीएसटी, एलटीटी, मुंबई सेंट्रल और बांद्रा टर्मिनस पर तो इनका आतंक है.

Corporation Bank has sponsored a pre-paid auto-rickshaw kiosk at Mangalore Central Railway Station.A press release by the Corporation Bank said here on Friday that the kiosk is constructed on a large area with necessary facilities and better infrastructure, including a shed, for the convenience of the commuters as well as the staff.The kiosk has come as a boon for thousands of commuters at the Mangalore Central railway station, it said. J.R. Lobo, MAL of Mangalore (South), inaugurated the kiosk here recently.N. Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, and Kurian P. Abraham, Deputy General Manager of Corporation Bank, were present on the occasion, it added.

Mangalore, Jul 6: As a responsible corporate citizen, Corporation Bank, a premier Public Sector Bank, continues to be in the forefront in reaching out to the society with commitment and dedication to the welfare of the society.  The Bank, headquartered at Mangalore, has sponsored a new Prepaid Autorickshaw Kiosk at Mangalore Central Railway Station. After a long gap, the prepaid autorickshaw service at the railway station has resumed, with the installation of the new kiosk. The kiosk is constructed on a large area with necessary facilities and better infrastructure, including a shed for the convenience of the commuters as well as the staff.  The kiosk has come as a boon for thousands of commuters at the Mangalore Central Railway Station, wherein a large number of trains including long distance ones pass through. The new prepaid autorickshaw kiosk at Mangalore Central Railway Station that commenced  functioning for the last three months, was formally inaugurated on July 2 by J R Lobo, MLA, Mangalore (South) in the presence of H S Prakash, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Mangalore district; Dr Kurian P Abraham, Deputy General Manager, Corporation Bank, Head Office, Mangalore; Shri S M Mujumdar, assistant general manager, Corporation Bank, Head Office, Mangalore; Shri Dharmaiah, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mangalore; Shri C Mallikurjana, Regional Transport Officer, Mangalore; Ganapati Bhat, Asst. Commissioner – Labour; Shri Harish Kotian, President, Taluk Panchayat; Shri Jayaprakash Shetty Vamanjoor, former Dist. H S Prakash, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Mangalore addressed the gathering on the occasion and advised the autorickshaw drivers to extend good service to commuters through the prepaid facility.  He also requested the drivers to take care of the commuters, keeping in view their responsibilities towards the society.
