Fourteen services in both directions between Tambaram and Chennai Beach stations were cancelled after guards of suburban electric trains refused to work overtime.

There are nearly 230 suburban electric services between Tambaram and Beach everyday. Due to a shortage of guards, many of them work overtime. On Wednesday morning, however, the guards refused to work overtime. As a result, seven trains from Tambaram to Beach and an equal number in the return direction were cancelled around noon.

However, the situation was diffused soon. Southern Railway authorities assured them that their grievances would be sorted out soon. As nearly all the top management of Southern Railway was busy with the Nellore fire accident on the Tamil Nadu Express, the guards were requested to resume overtime services, following which there was no further disruption of train services.

An unidentified woman abandoned her five-month-old baby girl on the platform No.2 at the railway station here on Wednesday morning. The railway police shifted it to the government hospital immediately. The baby was found abandoned after the Intercity Express train bound for Secunderabad from Nanded left the station in the morning.

CHENNAI: An abandoned box caused a bomb scare at Avadi railway station near Chennai on Thursday morning. Avadi is around 15km from Chennai and the station is on Chennai-Arakonam suburban route.In the wake of blasts in Pune, commuters became wary of a box lying unattended at the station and raised a scare during peak hour. Railway police and railway protection force personnel cordoned off the area and opened the box. They found that it belonged to a train guard who had forgotten to take it while returning from duty.It was handed over to him. "People became frightened because it was peak hour and the station was crowded with commuter travelling to work. We have stepped up security at railway stations following blast in Pune," said a railway police official.Security has been tightened at Central railway station also and passengers and visitors to the station are monitored through CCTV.

  Indian Railways News  / Lobo demands rail service to Candolim-Arpora tourist belt

PORVORIM: Calangute BJP MLA Michael Lobo urged the government to explore the possibility of connecting the Konkan Railway line to the Candolim-Arpora tourist belt and to revive the rent-a-bike scheme.Speaking during the demand for grants to transport and PWD, Lobo said that a large number of people from the coastal areas right from Pernem to Canacona earn their living by renting two-wheelers to tourists. He said the scheme started by the government 10 years ago had benefitted thousands and hence the government should reconsider its decision to stop implementing the scheme. Stating that it is a major source of self-employment to the coastal people, he requested the government to acquire land for parking rent-a-bikes. Lobo also called upon the government to start an insurance policy and mediclaim for taxi drivers.Stating that the coastal belt is facing a major transport problem, Lobo demanded a traffic coordination plan and that a committee comprising officers from transport, traffic, tourism and the village panchayat be constituted to look into the issue. He demanded that the government should construct parking lots, footpaths for tourists and a dedicated water pipeline for shacks.Goa Vikas Party chief Francisco 'Mickky' Pacheco demanded that the government get rid of agents and touts operating from outside the offices of the transport department. Moving over to the PWD, he said the roads constructed in the last five years were of poor quality and blamed it on the "percentage" system. He also demanded that the inquiry report of the anti-corruption branch on the suicide of a PWD contractor should be made public if the government believes in transparency. The ACB was asked to inquire into the case in which a contractor had committed suicide in Mayem two months ago.

Benaulim MLA Caetano 'Caitu' D'Silva said the former PWD had approved five bridges in the constituency when no one had asked for even half of them. "An inquiry should be instituted on the projects," he demanded. The Calangute MLA demanded that the government declare the dumping of construction material by the roadside a cognizable offence.

Dabolim MLA Mauvin Goinho requested that the government shut the swimming pool at the Goa Niwas in Delhi and convert it into a conference hall.

ग्रिड फेल की समस्या से जूझ रही रेलवे को बुधवार की सुबह एक और परेशानी से जूझना पड़ा। ग्रैंड कॉर्ड सेक्शन के पारसनाथ स्टेशन के समीप डाउन लाइन पर आ रही सियालदह राजधानी का इंजन फेल हो गया, जिससे ट्रेन वहीं थम गई। इस दौरान डाउन लाइन पर कई ट्रेनों को पास कराया गया। इससे गुस्साए यात्री नीचे उतर आये और डाउन लाइन पर आ रही गंगा-दामोदर एक्सप्रेस को रोक दिया। राजधानी के यात्री इंजन जोड़कर परिचालन की मांग पर डटे थे। गंगा-दामोदर एक्सप्रेस से जुड़ी डीआरएम सैलून से धनबाद लौट रहे डीआरएम सुधीर कुमार सहित अन्य अधिकारी बाहर आये और गुस्साए यात्रियों को शीघ्र परिचालन का आश्र्वासन दिया। यात्रियों को बताया गया कि गोमो लोको शेड से इंजन मंगवाया जा रहा है। अभी राजधानी के मुसाफिरों का गुस्सा थमा ही था कि गंगा-दामोदर के यात्री ट्रेन रोके जाने से हंगामा करने लगे। कुछ यात्री डीआरएम सैलून के समक्ष पहंुचे और ट्रेन खुलवाने का दबाव बनाया। लगभग पौन घंटे तक गंगा-दामोदर एक्सप्रेस पारसनाथ में रुकी रही। बाद में उसे धनबाद के लिए रवाना किया गया। दूसरा इंजन जोड़कर राजधानी पारसनाथ से खुली।
