CHENNAI: An abandoned box caused a bomb scare at Avadi railway station near Chennai on Thursday morning. Avadi is around 15km from Chennai and the station is on Chennai-Arakonam suburban route.In the wake of blasts in Pune, commuters became wary of a box lying unattended at the station and raised a scare during peak hour. Railway police and railway protection force personnel cordoned off the area and opened the box. They found that it belonged to a train guard who had forgotten to take it while returning from duty.It was handed over to him. "People became frightened because it was peak hour and the station was crowded with commuter travelling to work. We have stepped up security at railway stations following blast in Pune," said a railway police official.Security has been tightened at Central railway station also and passengers and visitors to the station are monitored through CCTV. |
