Authorities at Central Railway Station have decided to intensify their drive against those illegally occupying the station premises.The move comes in the wake of a seven-month-old baby girl, who was sleeping along with her parents, going missing at the arterial railway station recently.According to sources, the Central Railway Station has turned into a transit camp for a section of passengers, who visit the city for various purposes. “People visiting the Government General Hospital opposite Central, sleep at the station throughout the night,” official sources claimed. “With accommodations outside expensive, they find the railway station comfortable, as it could be accessed with just a platform ticket,” they added.Besides, hundreds of destitutes and beggars have taken refuge at the station.In fact, the Government Railway Police (GRP), probing the child missing case are examining the possibility of the baby being taken away by beggars. “A special team is carrying out investigations in this angle. They are interrogating beggars, who seek alms with children,” V Ponramu, DSP, Central Railway Station, GRP, said.Station Manager Govindasamy said the regular drive was being intensified with the involvement of RPF, GRP and ticket examiners. |

Krishna district Collector Buddha Prakash M. Jyothi on Monday discussed with officials the possibility of draining out stagnated flood water into the Budameru canal from the affected colonies.At a review meeting with Irrigation, Revenue, Municipal Corporation, and Roads and Buildings officials here, Mr. Buddha Prakash sought to know why water was not receding even after the Velagaleru regulator was closed and there was no fresh flood from the catchment areas.He directed the officials to discharge water from the Budameru slowly, keeping in view the standing crops downstream.When officials said sand dunes were formed at Gunadala bridge and removal of the old bridge was one of the solution for draining out flood water, the Collector asked them to discuss the matter with South Central Railway officials as the bridge was located in the railway area. In charge Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner K. Bhaskar said a meeting was planned on November 7 with officials of various departments to find out a permanent solution to prevent colonies from getting flooded in future. Mr. Bhaskar visited the affected colonies and streets in the One Town area and gave suggestions to municipal engineers on pumping flood water.Joint Collector P. Usha Kumari, Sub-Collector S. A 23-year-old undertrial allegedly escaped from the custody of the Haryana Police from the Kashmere Gate Metro station around 5 pm on Monday. Police said the train’s doors closed on the rope — one end of which was tied to the handcuffs of undertrial Sandeep Kumar and the other end was tied to Head Constable Manoj’s belt — leaving the policeman out of the train.Another policeman — Constable Tejpal — was also accompanying Kumar, who had been taken for a hearing at a Chandigarh court. After arriving at Kashmere Gate ISBT, the policemen took Kumar to the Metro station, police said.According to police, the personnel were to take the Metro to the HUDA City Centre station, and then take Kumar to Bhondsi Jail.Police said Sandeep got on to the train first, but the two policemen could not. As the train began to move, Head Constable Manoj — still tied to Sandeep with the rope — was forced to run alongside on the platform. He ultimately managed to untie the rope from his belt, but the train left with the undertrial, police said.Police suspect Kumar kept his handcuffed hands under a shawl that was draped around him, and escaped before checks began at the next station.DCP (Railways) Sanjay Bhatia said a case had been registered. Police were also going through the CCTV footage from the Metro stations.Closing Metro doors spring back if they detect a round object at least 19 mm in diameter. A flat object with a minimum width of 15 mm is also detected by the doors. The rope evidently escaped. |

NEW DELHI: London Olympics medallist wrestlers, Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt today inaugurated the Indian Railway Wrestling Academy. Sushil, who won a silver medal in London Games and also became the highest ranked wrestler on the international circuit, has been named as the OSD (Officer on Special Duty) of the academy, which will be dedicated to training upcoming grapplers with the Indian Railways."I couldn't be happier. I am honoured to be presented with such an opportunity. We have so many talented wrestlers but very often due to lack of training and the right guidance our wrestlers aren't able to excel. I hope with this academy we can offer the right training to budding wrestler in the Indian Railways," Sushil said.Sushil had won a bronze and a silver in two consecutive Olympics in Beijing and London, respectively. Besides this colossal feat, he has also won many prestigious awards including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in July 2009. |
