397 | Indian Railways News / Runaway train goes across India borderon : Aug 08, 2012 - 21:20:07 PM |
In a scene somewhat similar to Hollywood movies Runaway Train and Unstoppable, an unmanned train engine covered 29 km from India to Nepal on Monday. The diesel locomotive covered the distance from Jaynagar in Bihar on the Indo-Nepal border to Janakpur, the mythical birthplace of Lord Ram's wife Sita in Dhanusha district of Nepal, in 45 minutes. Operated by Nepal Railways Corporation, the Jaynagar-Janakpur narrow gauge stretch is part of the only functional train network in Nepal covering 53 km used by passengers to reach the sacred Hindu site. Though the passenger train takes two and half hours to traverse the distance at 10 km per hour, on Monday the engine sped at over 50 km per hour as railway officials watched in horror. It chugged past many bridges, pools and seven stations for 45 harrowing minutes before being diverted to an unused track in Janakpur railway station and brought to a halt by placing obstructions. The train's driver had got down at Jaynagar to quench his thirst while leaving the engine on neutral transmission mode when it started moving. Despite authorities learning about the incident immediately, they failed to stop the engine due to lack of manpower and equipment. It covered three kilometers before entering Nepal. "The episode could have ended in a serious crash if we had not placed obstructions," Maniraj Khatiwada, station manager at Janakpur told The Kathmandu Post. |

398 | Indian Railways News / BYJD warns of mass movementon : Jul 30, 2012 - 06:20:37 AM |
The Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) on Saturday warned unless the Centre stops its ‘anti-Odisha’ stand in the field of development of railway infrastructure, there will be mass movement in Odisha against the ‘step-motherly’ attitude.Reduction of Rs 186 crore from the budget will hit the development of railway infrastructure in the State hard, BYJD president Sanjay Dasburma said and alleged that it is a conspiracy against Odisha. The people of the State will give a fitting reply to the Centre for this injustice to Odisha, Dasburma told a media conference here.Dasburma alleged that even though Odisha had given a revenue of Rs 7,500 crore to the Railways in 2012-13, only Rs 723 crore was provided to the State in the Railway Budget. An all-party committee, headed by Speaker Pradip Amat, had demanded Rs 2,345 crore in the budget for development of railway infrastructure in the State, Dasburma said and added the Chief Minister had also placed a similar demand. Last year’s provision has affected industrialisation in the State as well as expansion of infrastructure to the Naxal-hit districts, he said.BYJD spokesman Bijay Nayak, State vice-president Lopamudra Buxipatra and Bhubaneswar district president Babu Singh were present. |

399 | Indian Railways News / Magnetic Metro scrappedon : Jul 30, 2012 - 08:00:16 AM |
The ambitious plan of Delhi Metro to introduce high-speed magnetic metro trains without wheels in phase 3 to run through a small corridor, has finally been scrapped. According to officials, the plan to run the Magnetic Levitation or Maglev trains to ply on the 5.5 km Najafgarh-Dwarka corridor proposed in phase 3 has been dropped. "We wanted to introduce the Maglev trains on experimental basis on a small stretch. But we later realised that Maglev is not a trusted technology and may create technical problems in the future," said SD Sharma, director business development, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).Last year a three-member team comprising former DMRC chief E Sreedharan, former director (works) and present MD Mangu Singh and director (rolling stock) HS Anand had visited Korea to gather first-hand experience about the Maglev trains. Korean Institute of Machinery and Materials have been engaged in development of Maglev trains in Korea. After returning, Sreedharan had sent a proposal to the union urban development ministry and also the chief minister of Delhi. After gathering experience from this small stretch, DMRC wanted to introduce Maglev trains at other cities as well at a later stage, HS Anand, director Rolling Stock had told HT. Initially, Delhi Metro thought that they will be able to run Maglev technology-based trains on the stretch as these trains' passenger carrying capacity is almost similar to the mid-capacity trains that are operational on Line 5 (Inderlok-Mundka) and Line 6 (Central Secretariat-Badarpur). |
