PUNE: The Government Railway Police (GRP) recently nabbed a gang of four involved in robbing passengers between Lonavla and Pune railway stations.A GRP team, led by inspector Abhay Parmar, arrested Mohan Hinge (20), Pramod Amrale (24) both of Bopodi; Badal Gorkha (22) and Laxman Kasale (18), both from Pimple Gurav. Police have recovered two cell phones from their possession.Investigations have revealed that the gang members had beaten up and robbed Rajesh Mali, a 36-year-old farmer from Barshi in Solapur district, who was travelling in a local train between Lonavla and Pune on July 5. "The suspects had robbed Mali of cash, cell phone and a bag totally worth Rs 55,000," Parmar said.On July 5, Mali had gone to Lonavla for work. He took the last Lonavla-Pune local, which left Lonavla station around 12.30 am with hardly 15 passengers in the compartment in which Mali was seated. The suspects entered into the train at Kasarwadi railway station. They came to Mali and started beating him up. "One of them snatched Mali's suitcase while others rained blows on the helpless man. They snatched Mali's two cell phones, a gold ring and bag containing Rs 17,000. The total value of the stolen good is Rs 55,000," said Parmar.During investigations, constable Amardip Salunke received a tip off that a criminal on police records, Mohan Hinge, was involved in the robbery in the local train. "We laid a trap and nabbed Hinge from Bopodi. During sustained interrogation, Hinge admitted to his involvement in the robbery and also revealed the names of three accomplices," said Parmar.Hinge has cases of robberies registered against him. "We suspect that the gang was involved in more such robberies. Further investigations were on," said Parmar. |

MLA Rowthu Suryaprakasa Rao has said that the announcement of Union Tourism Minister K. Chiranjeevi that the Havelock Bridge would be developed as a tourist spot has given new hopes and all the stakeholders of the bridge would work hard to redesign and dedicate the bridge to the nation by coming Godavari Pushkarams in 2015.Addressing media conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Suryaprakasa Rao lauded Mr. Chiranjeevi for taking the initiative despite all odds from Railways.He also thanked MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar, Union Human Resource Development Minister M. M. Pallam Raju and others for their role. The MLA specially commended people of Rajahmundry and all the organisations who took up the issue in a big way.The MLA said the late Divisional Engineer K. Srimannarayana had given an excellent design for constructing foot-over Bridge in place of Havelock railway track and the Municipal Corporation had taken up the design to the notice of the State government.Mr. Suryaprakasa Rao said that the MP and he had been pursuing the issue for the last eight years and they had proposed ‘Jambudweepam’ island tourism development centre in one corner of the Godavari.He said that Mr Arun Kumar would present the design, correspondence, estimates and other details before the Union Minister in the second week of August along with the State Tourism Minister and also raise the issue in the coming Parliament session. |

MUMBAI: Central Railway has commissioned its first fully Alternating Current (AC) compatible retroffited Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) rake for use on suburban railways.On July 14, CR's chief electrical engineer, PK Shrivastava, commissioned the first retrofitted fully AC EMU rake made by Sanpada Car Shed from an old 1500 volts Direct Current (DC) EMU rake.A CR spokesperson said, "The rake is fit for operation in 25 K Volt AC section. Perfomance wise, the retroffited rake is compatible with 25 AC EMU rakes built by Integral Coach Factory, Chennai. This rake will be use on Pune-Lonavala section of CR."The cost of retrofitting work for one 12 car rake is Rs 3.5 crore. A CR official said "It is a huge saving as the new AC rakes costs around Rs 24 crore approximately."The cost of retroffitment includes expenditure on electrical equipments, mechanical modification in coaches and replacement of old passenger seats. The coach has stainless steel partition and improved ventilation, new fans and lights.A CR spokesperson said, "Fifteen 12-car rakes are planned to be converted from old DC rakes to AC retro rakes in near future." |
