South Central Railway Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Pradeep Kumar has donned the role of an instructor in the Electric Traction Training Centre (ETTC). He explained the Apprentice Loco Pilots (ALPs) about major components in the engine.

The DRM, who visited the ETTC last week, interacted with the students. He explained that sand box was an important part of the engine, which helps prevent slipping of wheels from the tracks.

“Automatic sanders (sand boxes) and manual sanders are arranged in the engines. Wheels usually lose grip during rainy and winter seasons and when oil and grease falls on the tracks. The pilot should press the pedal to apply sand on the tracks to provide friction between the wheels and the tracks. Only river sand should be used in the process”, explained Mr. Pradeep Kumar.

Likewise, simulators (computer-based locos) will help identify the mistakes committed by a driver during training.

The instructors explain the apprentice loco pilots about the mistakes committed by the learners on the screens. The ALPs can rectify their faults and improve their driving skills, said ETTC Principal D.R.J. Prasad.

The ALPs, who arrived from different States, completed training on technical and general and subsidiary rules at the ETTC.

They will undergo training on ‘road learning’ for about 15 days.

The apprentice pilots would accompany the senior loco pilots on running trains and learn on road rules. Finally the loco inspectors inspect the driving skills of the fresh candidates, Mr. Pradeep Kumar told The Hindu.

“The Indian Railways arranged three model cars to explain the ALPs on different components in the engine. A display of the major components is arranged in the loco training centre”, said Mr. Pradeep Kumar.

Later, he observed the driving skills of the women loco pilots on the model cars.

With an aim to provide better passenger amenities and comfort to the commuters and also to avoid rush in other trains, Railways have decided to run a special train between Dibrugarh and Velankani.

05906 Dibrugarh-Velankani special will leave Dibrugarh o­n 4th September 2013 (Wednesday) at 1920hrs and will arrive at Velankani at 1900hrs o­n Saturday. In the return direction, 05905 Velankani-Dibrugarh special train will leave Velankani o­n 9th September 2013 at 0745hrs (Monday) and will arrive at Dibrugarh at 0930hrs o­n Thursday.

This special train has o­ne AC-2 tier, o­ne AC-3 tier, Six Sleeper Classes, Six General Second Class Coaches and Two Guard cum Luggage Vans in its composition having stoppages at Howrah, Kharagpur, Bhadrak, Bhubaneswar, Khurda Road, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada between Dibrugarh and Velankani.

The railway police detained 53 people in the early hours on Tuesday, for creating a nuisance while travelling between Elphinstone Road and Mahim stations. This is perhaps the largest number of detentions in a single drive this year and half of them were juveniles.The Government Railway Police (GRP) said three teams conducted the drive at Elphinstone, Dadar and Mahim, to identify and detain the travellers who shouted abuses or slapped passengers at the platform as the train rolled out of the station. Rajendra Trivedi, senior police inspector at Mumbai Central police station, said most of those detained had left their homes on Monday evening to visit the Siddhivinayak Temple in Dadar overnight and they were returning home by the first trains. Trivedi said police planned the the drive after a complaint of chain-snatching received from a Kandivli resident who was returning from Dadar by train in the early hours. One of the persons detained on Tuesday confessed to having stolen a mobile phone and a gold chain recently.“The GRP contacted the parents of the 25 minors to inform them about the unruly behaviour of their wards,” Trivedi said. They were counselled by women police and allowed to go. The other 28 people were booked under various sections and fined Rs1,000 each by a court .

In order to alleviate the effect of rising fuel prices and increasing pollution from transport sector, Research Development Standard Organisation (RDSO), the research wing of Indian Railways is in the process of developing a highly fuel efficient, Common Rail Electronic Direct Fuel Injection (CReDI) system for its fleet of diesel locomotives. On diesel locomotives, however, this technology is beginning to be implemented world over recently. Indian Railways has taken a global lead in starting development of the CReDI for its fleet of diesel locomotives. For this purpose, an Indian manufacturer has established a joint venture with a reputed firm from Switzerland for design and development of the system under overall supervision of RDSO. Final testing of the system will be done at the large bore engine laboratory of RDSO. Fuel savings in the range of 3 to 4 per cent and emissions reductions by about 20-30% are expected. Once the systems are implemented on the complete fleet of locomotives, savings will be about Rs. 500-600 crore annually.

In the long-term, complete manufacture, assembly and testing of the CReDI system shall be done in India placing India among the few countries possessing design and manufacturing capabilities for such sophisticated systems for large bore engines like locomotives, marine, trucks and battle tanks etc. Besides Railways many other Industries of India stand to gain from these developments.

These types of systems are being used on all road diesel vehicles including passenger cars and have helped reduce fuel consumption and emissions of harmful pollutants from these vehicles. In the common rail systems, fuel at a high pressure (1600 bars) is injected into the cylinder by using a magnetic valve. It is possible to have multiple injections in the cylinder thereby reducing stress on the cylinder parts and reduce fuel consumption and emissions at the same time. Common Rail technology has been hailed as break-through invention for diesel engines world over and has been responsible for dramatically reducing the fuel consumption of diesel vehicles. Use of Common Rail systems has resulted in increasing the population of diesel passengers’ cars in Europe by more than 50%. European emissions laws are considered to be one of the most stringent across the globe.

A record 5.72 lakh online train tickets were booked on Monday, the highest in a single day for the Railways.

The e-ticketing Website of IRCTC booked the highest number of e-tickets ever on a single day yesterday. The record booking of 5.72 lakh e-tickets was achieved on September 2, surpassing the earlier record of 5.04 lakhs on August 12, this year, said a senior IRCTC official.

This is the third time more than 5 lakh tickets have been booked on a single day this year, the first time was on March 1.

IRCTC has booked 135 lakh e-tickets at an average of 4.34 lakh each day in August this year against a total of 123 lakh e-tickets at an average of 3.99 lakh daily in the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of about 10 per cent in booking.

The overall daily average booking was around 3.85 lakhs last year.

The total number of passengers booked by IRCTC has also gone up to 233 lakh in August 2013 against 220 lakh achieved in August 2012.

IRCTC also recently launched SMS-based ticketing through which one can book a train ticket with a basic feature mobile phone by sending simple SMSes.

SURAT: The anti-tout squad of Western Railway along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) conducted surprise checking against the unauthorized railway ticket agencies in the city.

Official sources said that the raids were conducted few days ago at M/s Thakkar International located at Sargam shopping complex at Parle Point.

The owner of the firm identified as Laxmichand Thakkar and his employee were arrested on the charges under section 143 of the Railway's Act, 1989.

During the check, an employee present in the shop admitted to generating tickets without any licence or authority issued by IRCTC for railway e-ticketing. He also admitted to generating tickets on different personal IDs and selling them at a premium of 200-300 per person above the actual fare.

Several articles such as 10 e-tickets generated using personal IDs, 2 e-tickets using different agent IDs, one partially used order-cum-bill book, etc were seized from the office.

A senior WR officer said, "The above action was taken in view of an incident brought to the notice of Mumbai Central Division of WR by an aware citizen in the city."

रांची. अब रांची रेलवे स्टेशन के बुकिंग काउंटर पर टिकट के लिए लाइन में खड़े होने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ेगी। रांची रेल मंडल एक सप्ताह में रांची स्टेशन बुकिंग सेंटर से टोकन कम क्यू मैनेजमेंट सिस्टम की शुरुआत करने जा रही है। इसके लिए एक टोकन मशीन के साथ डिजिटल डिस्प्ले भी बुकिंग सेंटर पर इंस्टॉल कर दी गई है। इस सर्विस के शुरू होने के बाद यात्रियों को काफी सहुलियत होगी। टोकन लेने के बाद वो आराम से कुर्सी पर बैठकर अपने नंबर आने का इंतजार करते दिखेंगे। साथ ही समय की बचत भी होगी।

बुकिंग सेंटर में एक टोकन डिस्पेंसर मशीन लगाई गई है। इसमें चार बटन हैं। पहला बटन रिजर्वेशन, दूसरा कैंसिलेशन, तीसरा तत्काल और चौथा बटन प्रिविलेज सर्विस के लिए है। जरूरत के अनुसार बटन दबाने पर एक टोकन निकलेगा, जिसमें नंबर लिखा होगा। यही टोकन नंबर डिजिटल डिस्प्ले बोर्ड पर काउंटर नंबर के साथ दिखेगा। उदाहरण के तौर पर अगर डिस्प्ले पर काउंटर नंबर दो नंबर काउंटर लिखा आता है, तो दो नंबर काउंटर पर टोकन लेकर जाना होगा। वहीं से टिकट कटेगा।

साउथ ईस्टर्न रेलवे का पहला स्टेशन

पूरे साउथ ईस्टर्न रेलवे में रांची रेलवे बुकिंग सेंटर में इस सर्विस की शुरुआत पहली बार होनी जा रही है। इस तरह रांची रेलवे स्टेशन साउथ ईस्टर्न रेलवे का पहला टोकन सर्विस देने वाला स्टेशन बन जाएगा। वर्तमान में मुंबई, बंगलुरू, नागपुर में यात्रियों को टोकन सर्विस का फायदा मिल रहा है। इस सर्विस को शुरू करने में 3.80 लाख रुपए खर्च आ रहा है। रांची की लॉ-विशन कंपनी मशीन लगाने का काम कर रही है। मशीन लगाने का काम 90 फीसदी तक पूरा हो चुका है।

लाइन में खड़े होने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ेगी

टोकन कम क्यू मैनेजमेंट सिस्टम के शुरू हो जाने से यात्रियों को टिकट कटाने के लिए लाइन में खड़े होने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ेगी। टोकन लेने के बाद यात्री आराम से कुर्सी पर बैठकर अपनी बारी का इंतजार कर सकते हैं। बुजुर्ग व महिला यात्रियों को इसका अधिक लाभ मिलेगा। साथ ही टिकट दलालों पर भी रोक लगेगी।’
