The railway police detained 53 people in the early hours on Tuesday, for creating a nuisance while travelling between Elphinstone Road and Mahim stations. This is perhaps the largest number of detentions in a single drive this year and half of them were juveniles. The Government Railway Police (GRP) said three teams conducted the drive at Elphinstone, Dadar and Mahim, to identify and detain the travellers who shouted abuses or slapped passengers at the platform as the train rolled out of the station. Rajendra Trivedi, senior police inspector at Mumbai Central police station, said most of those detained had left their homes on Monday evening to visit the Siddhivinayak Temple in Dadar overnight and they were returning home by the first trains. Trivedi said police planned the the drive after a complaint of chain-snatching received from a Kandivli resident who was returning from Dadar by train in the early hours. One of the persons detained on Tuesday confessed to having stolen a mobile phone and a gold chain recently.“The GRP contacted the parents of the 25 minors to inform them about the unruly behaviour of their wards,” Trivedi said. They were counselled by women police and allowed to go. The other 28 people were booked under various sections and fined Rs1,000 each by a court . |
