A new App ‘Menu o­n Rails’, developed by IRCTC has been launched for the items served to them on their Rail Journey. Salient features of the Mobile APP are as under:

• This App displays menu of food items served on all type of trains.
• Food items are covered in 4 categories for mail / express trains.
• 4 categories of food items served on mail express trains are - Breakfast, Meals, A-La-Carte, Beverages.
• This app will let you know the actual rates fixed by IRCTC of all the food items.
• List of 96 items will be displayed in A-La-Carte.
• Mobile App also displays the menu to be served in Rajdhani/ Shatabdi/ Duronto trains
• Pre Booked food items are displayed separately for EC and CC classes in case of Shatabdi trains and 1A, 2A and 3A classes for Rajdhani and Duronto trains. 
• In case of Duronto trains, food items for Sleeper class are also displayed.
• Gatiman and Tejas train's food items are also displayed.
• Food item rates displayed are inclusive of taxes.
• Mobile App is available on both iOS and Android.

Indian Railways has for the first time completely digitized the Complaint management system. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways & Coal today launched a new App “Rail Madad” – An App to streamline passenger grievance redressal. RPGRAMS(Railway Passenger Grievance Redressal and Management System), comprises many novel features including ‘Rail Madad’ – a mobile register complaints by passengers through mobile phone/web. It also pprovides real time feedback to passengers on the status of redressal of their complaints. It also identifies weak/deficient areas and laggard trains/stations for undertaking focussed corrective actions. 

Salient features of Rail Madad application are- 

• Rail MADAD (Mobile Application for Desired Assistance During travel) registers a complaint with minimum inputs from passenger, generates Unique ID instantly and forwards complaint online immediately. The action taken on complaint is also relayed to passenger through SMS. 
• Displays various helpline numbers (e.g., Security, Child helpline etc) and provides direct calling facility. 
• All modes of filing complaints including offline and online modes are being integrated on a single platform. 
• The data analysis would help in making managerial decision more effective. 
• Hierarchy based dashboard/reports will be available for management at Division /Zonal/Railway board level. 

IRCTC has launched the new website with various added functionality. The beta version of the website is in its initial 15 days trial period and offers more user friendly interface. Navigation within the website has been made easier so are the simplified features. Here are the new significant updates on the new IRCTC website -

• You can check availability of seats without logging in.
• The font size can be selected for comfortable viewing experience.
• Filters has been used to classify trains class-wise, destination -wise, train -wise, timing wise and quota wise. User can choose any of these filters to find the perfect matching trains.
• Information like train name, source station, terminating station, distance between stations, departure time, arrival time and journey time will be displayed on single screen.
• Wait list prediction has been added in case confirm seats are not available.
• Different colour schemes are used to display different types of information.
• Navigation on the website has been optimized for desktops, tablets and mobiles.

Life of a two month old boy was saved by South Central Railway officials during a train journey.  Sagar Kanjilal and his wife Banashree were travelling in an air-conditioned coach of 12246 Yesvantpur-Howrah Duronto Express with their two month old boy in the night of June 5.

The child was on oxygen support and the couple found that before the train could reach Vijayawada Railway station their last oxygen cylinder would exhaust. Sagar Kanjilal informed TTE - PVS Jagga Rao who then informed informed control office instantly. Within half an hour the train arrived at Vijayawada station railway authorities were ready with the oxygen cylinder.

The efforts of the chief ticket inspector and other officials were applauded by South Central Railway Vijayawada Divisional Manager.

In a first food vending machine is installed by Indian Railways on Coimbatore - Bengaluru Uday Express. The first Uday express was flagged off on June 8 as special train. Juices, drinks such as tea, coffee and snacks were available on this tablet - operated machine. Passengers on board can select items and get it dispensed once the payment is made.

Tea-sellers at railway station utilizing live train running status apps like runningstatus.in, railenquiry and NTES to track oncoming trains so that they prepare and serve hot tea at right time.

These live train running status apps are especially useful at halt stations. With smartphones in every hand it has become very easy to download such apps and utilize their full potential. Not only these apps help to generate more business but it also provide an opportunity to do it more efficiently.

Apps like runningstatus or railenquiry provides real-time status queries for all trains.

"We can easily track oncoming trains and prepare food on time and serve fresh. Every passengers like fresh and hot snacks with tea. Before such apps it was hard to tack trains as announcements at stations were very erratic and sometimes not accurate enough to follow."

If train is is your primary transport choice or even occasional transport choice then often it happens you are compelled to purchase food items from stations or trains. Railway receives overcharging complaints on a frequent basis as actual rate list of food items fixed by Indian railway is not known to many passengers. This allows food vendors to charge extra on food items. Now railway wants to bring awareness among travellers regarding actual prices of food items. Railway has issued a rate list indicating actual price of each and every food item served on trains and stations. Here is the rate list that you must know -

• Standard tea - Rs 5
• Tea with tea bag - Rs 7
• Coffee -- Rs 7
• Rail Neer halt litre water bottle - Rs 10
• Rail Neer 1 ltr water bottle - Rs 15
• Vegetarian standard breakfast - Rs 25 on stations and Rs 30 on train
• Non - Vegetarian standard breakfast - Rs 30 on stations and Rs 35 on train
• Janta Meal - Rs 15 on station and Rs 20 on train
• Standard Vegetarian meal - Rs 45 on station and Rs 50 on train
• Non - Vegetarian standard meal - Rs 50 on station and Rs 55 on train.
