28 | Indian Railways News / Pune railway station, state transport depots raise a stinkon : Apr 10, 2012 - 14:41:32 PM |
Pune: The water cut imposed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has left railway stations and ST stands stinking as the Pune railway station and Maharashtra State Road Transport Development Corporation (MSRTC) depots are not getting enough water for cleaning purpose. The city is facing a water crunch after the PMC has imposed 20% water cut to tackle the water scarcity. The civic administration’s decision has resulted in shortage in water supply to places like railway stations and MSRTC bus depots. Now, the rush at railway station and ST depots is increasing because of the summer vacations and it is creating more dirt at the station area."The Pune railway station has six platforms from which nearly 150 trains operate daily. According to railway officials, “The Pune railway station requires nearly two lakh litres of water for cleaning purpose. Of which, nearly 60,000 litres is required for platform number one and two from where maximum number of trains are operated. The railway administration gets water supply from the PMC and apart from that, the railways also own a borewell from where water is supplied to the station. However, the railways are getting only 30% of water from the PMC at present and the water level in the borewell has also gone down as a result of which, the railway administration is facing acute water shortage. We have to provide drinking water at the station due to which we have to reduce the water used for cleaning purpose and we are not able to maintain cleanliness at the station,’’ the officials said.It is a similar case at MSRTC depots also. Swargate and Shivajinagar ST depots are also gathering a lot of dirt due to insufficient water available for cleaning. A Swargate depot official said, “We are providing sufficient drinking water at the stand for the convenience of passengers, but we are struggling to get enough water for cleaning purpose. We are not able to clean our buses properly and now passengers have started complaining about the dirty condition of the buses.’’ |

29 | Indian Railways News / Train traffic hit by 3 hours, 2 wagons derailon : Apr 10, 2012 - 14:42:31 PM |
NAGPUR: Two wagons of a goods train derailed near Dobi Nagar slums disrupting passenger train traffic by more than three hours on Howrah section on Monday evening. The accident occurred when the goods train was crossing the Itwari line. "As the wagons fell on the crossover, one of the wagons tilted on the up-line disrupting passenger train traffic," railway officials said. The mishap site is hardly 500-600 metres away from the Nagpur station towards Itwari-Kalamna end.A section of residents from Dobi Nagar, who witnessed the mishap, said the derailment took place around 4:30pm near the diamond crossing. "There was a loud noise as a few wagons dragged through a crossover point and derailed a few metres away from the spot," said Roshan Masurkar, who was near the tracks when the derailment took place.Even as the mishap site attracted curious onlookers from the slums, it also put the Central Railway officials including divisional railway manager (DRM) Brijesh Dixit and additional DRM Uday Borwankar and branch heads on their toes. All were at the spot in no time. The loaded wagon rake had started for Chhattisgarh from Nagpur yard around 4:15pm but derailed at the boundary of Central Railway and South East Central Railway (SECR). The two wagons that were derailed were loaded with salt.Barring seven wagons, including the two ill-fated ones, remaining wagons were shifted to Itwari and Nagpur yard. The mishap delayed at least a dozen mail-express trains coming and moving out of Nagpur. These trains included Gondia-Mumbai Vidarbha, Bilaspur-Eranakulam, Kolhapur-Gondia Maharashtra, Mumbai-Howrah Gitanjali, Howrah-Pune Azad Hind, Howrah-Ahmedabad and Howrah-Mumbai Mail.Sources said the mishap caused chaos at Nagpur station and also confusion among the passengers as train platforms were being changed frequently while making announcements. The officials kept their fingers crossed on the exact cause of mishap. "There can be various possibilities and nothing can be said at this moment. Our first priority is to restore train traffic," said ADRM Uday Borwankar. A probe has been ordered, he added. However, as usual engineering, mechanical and signalling department officials were ensuring that their department is not at fault. "It seems, the bogies had some problem. Otherwise why other bogies did not derail," said some officials. As the derailed wagons were fully loaded, it was taking time to bring the wagons back on the track. Borwankar said normalcy on the affected track will be restored by 9.30pm but it was not. |

30 | Indian Railways News / Protest Against Toy train shutdownon : Apr 10, 2012 - 14:43:42 PM |
Angry villagers staged a rail roko and shut down shops at Matheran railway station on Monday afternoon for over three hours to protest against Central Railway (CR)'s apathy towards toy trains.Tourism in the hill station has taken a hit after some of toy train services to Matheran were cancelled last month.Around 1pm, villagers started protesting on the railway tracks and demanded a solution to technical troubles in toy train engines. The protest was called off around 4.30pm after the Central Railway DRM assured Ajay Sawant, president of Matheran Municipal Council, on phone, that he will call a high-level meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue at his office in Mumbai. Services resumed after the assurance.Sawant said, "The livelihood of nearly 10,000 locals depends on tourism. We have held several meetings with CR officials. The DRM also visited the station but no action was taken. This led to anger among locals and we decided to stage a rail roko.""The tourist season has started but the number of visitors has reduced this year due to affected train services," Sawant added.Ramesh Patil, a villager who participated in the protest, said it has been over a month since many toy train services to Matheran were cancelled. This, he said, is causing inconvenience to tourists in reaching the hill station.VA Malegaonkar, chief public relations officer, said, "There were six locomotives for this stretch. Of this, one has been sent for period over-hauling before its scheduled date. Of the remaining five, two developed a snag due to which one service had to be cancelled. The services are expected to run normally from Tuesday."CR operates 10 services on weekends and eight on weekdays. Approximately 2,000 people travel by these toy trains every day.Matheran has been declared as an eco-sensitive region by the Union ministry of environment and forests. It is one of the few places in the world where vehicles are not allowed. Tourists can take a taxi or bus to the hill station but it costs more and people prefer the train, which takes them to the entrance of Matheran. From here, it is a 3-km walk to the main market area of the hill station. |
