Ranchi: Normal life in Jharkhand was affected with the nationwide strike called by various political parties, including ruling partners BJP and JMM in the state, in protest against FDI in multi-brand retail and hike in diesel price.

Slogan-shouting bandh supporters squatted on railway tracks in Koderma, Dhanbad and other places disrupting train services for over a couple of hours, railways sources said.

BJP activists also put up blockades on national highways, affecting vehicular traffic, to protest Centre's decision allowing FDI in retail, hike in diesel prices and limiting subsidised LPG cylinders.





Work at PSUs was affected following disruption of transportation of coal, iron ore, bauxite and other minerals in view of the stir.

Most educational institutions, shops and business establishments remained closed for the day.

"The BJP demands immediate roll back of diesel prices and limitation of subsidised LPG cylinders," party spokesman Pradip Sinha said at a gathering in Albert Ekka Chowk here.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric-JVM) president Babulal Marandi, JMM vice president Sudhir Mahto, RJD state unit president Girinath Singh and Left leaders also demanded immediate rollback of the decisions.

JMM and JVM are supporting the UPA government at the Centre.

Train services in East Coast Railway jurisdiction were disrupted due to Bharat Bandh today. As a result, some trains were controlledenroute and some have been cancelled and short terminated. The demonstration in different stations o­n Howrah-Chennai main line was called off at 11.45hrsand train movements were normalised except Talcher.
REGULATION OF TRAINS:
Mail/Express trains were controlled enroute at different stations like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khurda Road, Brahmapur, Balugaon, Bhadrak, Angul, Paradeep, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road, Puri, Koraput from the early morning till the agitation were called off before noon at most of the places.
CANCELLATION OF TRAINS:
12278/12277 Puri-Howrah-Puri Duronto Express,18411/18412 Bhubaneswar-Visakhapatnam-Bhubaneswar Inter City Express, 12074/12073Bhubaneswar-Howrah-Bhubaneswar Jan Shatabdi Express, 18414/18413 Puri-Paradeep-Puri Inter City Express, 18416 Puri-Barbil Inter City Express and 12892 Bhubaneswar-Bangiriposi Express trains were cancelled today from both the directions.

SHORT-TERMINATION:
18303 Sambalpur-Puri Inter City Express will be short terminated at Khurda Road and will return back as 18304 Puri-Sambalpur Inter City Express from Khurda Road to Sambalpur. This train will remain cancelled between Khurda Road & Puri from both the direction.
18105 Rourkela-Bhubaneswar Inter CityExpress will be short terminated at Angul and will return back as 18106 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela Inter City Express from Angul to Rourkela. This train will remain cancelled between Angul and Bhubaneswar from both the direction.
78502 Palasa-Cuttack passenger will be short terminate at Brahmapur and will return back as 78501 Cuttack-Palasa passenger from Brahmapur and will remain cancelled between Cuttack & Brahmapur from both the direction.
78420 Palasa-Bhubaneswar passenger will be short terminate at Ichhapuram and will return back to Palasa and will remain cancelled between Ichhapuram and Bhubaneswar from both the direction.
58418 Gunupur-Puri passenger will be short terminate at Palasa and will return back to Gunupur and will remain cancelled between Palasa and Puri from both the direction.
58132 Puri-Rourkela passenger will be short terminate at Angul and will return back to Puri. This train will remain cancelled between Angul and Rourkela from both the direction.
12891 Bangiriposi-Bhubaneswar Express, 18415 Barbil-Puri Express and 58005 Kharagpur-Khurda Road passenger will be short terminated in the way and will remain cancelled upto their destinations from both the direction.

Train services in East Coast Railway jurisdiction were disrupted since early morning to forenoon due to Bharat Bandh today. The demonstration in different stations on Howrah-Chennai main line including branch lines was called off at 11.45hrs and train movements were normalized. The demonstration at Talcher Station was called off at 14.45hrs.

In view of this, 12893 Bhubaneswar-Bolangir Inter City Express which was left Bhubaneswar station after it’s scheduled time has been short terminated at Sambalpur and returned back to Bhubaneswar from Sambalpur. This train was remained cancelled between Sambalpur and Bolangir today.

Thursday's bandh called by political parties to protest against FDI in retail and hike in diesel prices affected services of more than 200 trains across the country.
"Services of 238 trains were disrupted due to the Bharat bandh," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
A maximum number of 57 trains were affected in East Coast Railway followed by East Central Railway (40), Eastern Railway (32) and South Eastern Railway (26).
Northern Railway witnessed disruption of services of 29 trains in different parts of zone.
"There were blockades by bandh supporters on the tracks for which trains were held up for some time. But most of the trains resumed service after the lifting of the blockade," said a Northern Railway official.

The protestors raised slogans against the Central government, demanding immediate withdrawal of reforms

Hundreds of cadres belonging to Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Janata Dal (Secular), and Forward Bloc on Thursday laid siege to the Madurai railway junction in protest against diesel price rise, cap on cooking gas, allowing 51 per cent foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail, and disinvestment of some core public sector units.

The protestors, led by Madurai South MLA and CPI(M) State executive member R. Annadurai, raised slogans against the Central government, demanding immediate withdrawal of reforms and rollback of diesel prices. They termed them as war on the common working class masses and the middle classes.

Though the police led by Deputy Commissioner (Law and Order) R. Thirunavukkarasu cordoned off the main entrance, a few cadres managed to gain entry into the railway station through alternative ways and tried to stop the Guruvayur-Chennai Express. The moving train came to a halt and after a couple of minutes, it started moving as the police cleared the protestors.

Later all the protestors were arrested and taken in buses and released in the evening. N. Nanmaran, former CPI(M) MLA; P. Sethuraman, State secretariat member; R. Jayaraman, urban district secretary, CPI; C. Muthuramalingam, State secretary, Forward Bloc; N. Ramesh, district secretary, K. John Moses, State secretary, Janata Dal (Secular); and Packia Thevar, rural secretary, took part in the protest.
