Kolkata : A five-year-old, kidnapped from Dhanbad while returning from school, was rescued today after being spotted by a railway gangman inside a local train in Purulia, Eastern Railway officials said. Piyush , son of Railway employee Rajkamal Paswan, was kidnapped from Malkera Railway station in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand on Saturday. The gangman recognised the boy and raised an alarm at Santaldih railway station when the kidnapper was taking him away by AdraKhanoodih passenger train, the sources said. The kidnapper tried to flee leaving the boy but the RPF personnel chased the kidnapper and caught him. He was later arrested. The ransom of Rs 2.2 lakh paid by the boy's family was also seized from him. The kidnapper had demanded Rs 15 lakh as ransom. He was paid Rs 2.20 lakh near Gawai river of Santaldih yesterday, but he did not release the child. The child has now been handed over to the local police, the sources added. |

RANCHI: It was decided in Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) board meeting on Wednesday that the civic body will soon get a new building in the city for its operations.Mayor Rama Khalkho said, "The proposal for constructing a new building for RMC has been passed and the six storey building will be erected next to Town Hall."In the meeting it was decided that 10 by lanes under RMC, including those at Bahu Bazaar, Doranda, Chutia and many others will be handed over to PWD. Khalko said, "Due to lack of funds we will be handing over the responsibility of 10 roads to PWD for its repair and maintenance."Public toilets will be set up at five spots in the city and those which the existing ones would be repaired. "The ward councilors have been directed to inform RMC about any unused or vacant plot. Public toilets might be built on those plots as well", said the mayor.User charges of hostel and lodges without a kitchen have been reduced. "The lodge owners who did not have kitchens approached RMC for reduction of charges."They earlier had to pay Rs 1000 but the rent has been reduced to Rs.500 now", said Khalko.Also new prepaid auto and taxi counters will be built at the Hatia railway station as decided in the meeting. Khalko said, "We have taken the decision keeping in mind the convenience of the travellers. Once the pre-paid auto and taxi services start at the station, the passengers will not have to go through the trouble of paying extra money to the auto drivers." |

Employees of the railway workshop here affiliated to the South Western Railway Mazdoor Union staged a dharna on Wednesday seeking better working conditions and filling vacancies.Nearly 400 employees of the workshop participated in the dharna outside the chief workshop manager’s office at Ashokapuram.The protesters demanded that technician I and technician II grades be merged. They asked that Group C staff at the apex level be made Group B and demanded that outsourcing of railway works be stopped.T.D. Anil Kumar, secretary of the union, said in a release here that even though the All-India Railwaymen’s Federation and the Railway Board arrived at agreements, orders pertaining to their demands had not been issued.The union members also urged the authorities to fill vacancies and called for scrapping the new pension scheme.The dharna was led by general secretary of the union A.M. A musical journey awaits passengers of premier trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi with Railways deciding to play classical sound tracks in coaches.Instrumental music played by maestros like Ustad Bismillah Khan, TN Rajaratnam Pillai and Pandit Pannalal Ghosh will keep passengers entertained in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains which have a public announcement system in place. Indian Railways has sourced the music from the All India Radio library.“We have sourced certain selected instrumental and Carnatic music from the All India Radio library. The AIR has permitted us to play the music in select trains,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.Besides shehnai tracks by Ustad Bismillah Khan and sarod of Ustad Alluddin Khan, the offerings includes violin tracks by Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu, Nagaswaram of TN Rajaratnam Pillai among others.Other artists whose music will entertain train passengers include tabla by Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa, Dhrupad by Dagar brothers, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee on sitar, Radhika Mohan Maitra and Sharan Rani on sarod.The ministry has given instruction to zonal railways that while playing the music, the region through which the train passes should be kept in mind. Railways are also taking a number of initiatives for on—board entertainment of passengers.“We are in the process of providing live TV facility in Shatabdis originating from New Delhi,” said the official.PTI |
