127 | Indian Railways News / Railway minister leads Trinamool rally against petrol hikeon : May 24, 2012 - 21:00:05 PM |
|
Kolkata : Political parties in West Bengal Thursday hit the streets to protest the steep hike in petrol prices, with the ruling UPA partner Trinamool Congress taking out a large procession led by Railway Minister Mukul Roy to demand a rollback. Roy, the only cabinet minister from the Trinamool in the United Progressive Alliance government, was at the forefront of the protest rally which traversed about five km from Hazra Crossing in south Kolkata to the Gandhi Statue on Mayo Road in central Kolkata. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions - the labour arm of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) - called for demonstrations in Kolkata and outside the offices of the district magistrates in the districts. Describing the sharp petrol hike as an affront to the working class, CITU state president Shaymal Chakraborty said: "It will burden those who ride motor-cycles". Railing against the central government for announcing the hike a day after the budget session of parliament came to an end, he said: "The intention was to avoid parliament. This will create doubts in the people's mind about the parliamentary system". He urged the central and state governments to remove or reduce taxes on petrol products. Attacking Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has said her party would protest but not pull out of the government, Chakraborty said: "She wants to have the best of both worlds. She is taking people for a ride". Warning the central government, he said if diesel prices now are also increased, then the entire public transport network would be brought to a grinding halt. The CPI-M's youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India, has announced a "chakka jam" (stop wheels)programme from 5 p.m. to 5.15 p.m. Saturday. The Bharatiya Janata Party workers put up road blocks in the busy Dharamtala area and at the Howrah Bridge. State-controlled refiners hiked petrol prices by a steep Rs.6.28 per litre, exclusive of taxes, effective from midnight Wednesday. The hike will be between Rs.7.54 and Rs.7.98 in the four metros and would vary in other cities depending on the state levies. |

CHANDIGARH Punjab is set to have a date with modernity, and the Manchester of India with metro. Ludhiana, the bursting-at-the-seams industrial hub of Punjab, will soon have metro rail criss-crossing in two corridors on elevated and underground pathways. Fast-tracking the big-ticket project to establish Metro Rail Transit System (MRTS) in Ludhiana at a whopping cost of Rs 10,000 crore, the Punjab Government has ordered a feasibility report. Almost a year after the Punjab Cabinet accorded in-principle approval to the mega project, the Centre has agreed to give financial and technical support to help realise another dream project of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. With a view to bring the first-ever metro to the border state, Chief Secretary Rakesh Singh has given nod to the 29-km-long public transport network in public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The state government has engaged Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare feasibility report for MRTS for Ludhiana. Confirming this, Principal Secretary Local Government Suresh Kumar told Daily Post that the prescribed proforma of the Union Finance Ministry had been sent to the DMRC for preparing a feasibility report, which would be sent to the Planning Commission through the Finance Ministry for approval. The Commission had already agreed to consider the project for financial-cum-technical assistance. Putting the dream project in top gear, the Chief Minister has, in a demi-official letter to Planning Commissioner Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, stated that the state government was keen on developing Ludhiana as a world-class city and MRTS would be one of the key infrastructural projects for the city. “We have engaged DMRC for preparing a detailed report for the project which has since been approved by the state government and it has been decided to implement the project on PPP basis,” Badal wrote, adding that his government was keen on seeking assistance of the Planning Commission in taking the proposal forward. Badal requested Ahluwalia to advise concerned officers of Planning Commission to extend necessary assistance to the officers. |
