916 | Indian Railways News / Chaos at railway stations in national capital as 35 lakh go home in last 2 dayson : Nov 13, 2012 - 21:00:39 PM |

NEW DELHI: Railway stations across the city witnessed a mad rush two days before Diwali as people made plans to meet their family members in other states during the festive week. According to the railways commercial department, 35 lakh passengers have left the city in past two days. The railways has recorded 30% additional footfall in view of the upcoming festivals — Diwali, Chhath Puja and Bhai Dooj. With the highest number of special trains being run this year and a significant augmentation of coaches since Durga Puja, many hail this as a record. Though the railways has made all possible arrangements — even stopping sale of tickets at platforms from November 11 to November 23, and making alternate arrangements to ensure trains bound for Bihar, UP and West Bengal do not arrive on corresponding platforms — the rush near the general compartments could hardly be contained. This is despite the presence of a special contingent of RPF placed before coaches at the instance of Northern Railway GM Vijay Kumar Gupta, who inspected the New Delhi station. This year alone, 80 special trains are running on Northern Railway, which will make 1,762 trips during Chhath. The passengers, however, complained that the special trains were not on time. "I had taken the special 9pm train to Lucknow. The arrival time was 5.50am, but the train came six hours late,'' said Sucheta Lalchandani. Other passengers to Bihar said most of the special trains, especially those to Anand Vihar, were eight to 11 hours behind schedule.Additional ticket counters have been provided over the entire Northern Railway. Of these, 25 extra booking counters for reserved tickets have become functional in Delhi area, of which 7 are in IRCA. For unreserved tickets, seven additional counters have been provided at both New Delhi railway station and Anand Vihar Terminal, while four have been provided at Old Delhi. |

920 | Indian Railways News / Specail trains run out of seatson : Nov 20, 2012 - 00:00:03 AM |

RANCHI: The Chhath special trains introduced by the railways to cater to the festival rush are running out of seats. This despite the fact that the Ranchi division of the railway recently introduced three trains -- the Ranchi-Saharsha Chhath puja special, the Ranchi-Katihar Chhath puja special and the Hatia Yeswantpur Chhat puja special -- for Chhath, the biggest festival in Bihar and Jharkhand. All the trains which are running between various destinations in Bihar from Ranchi and Hatia railway stations are crammed with passengers who are going home to celebrate Chhath.Ranchi DRM G Malaya said, "The special trains were introduced in the wake of high demand during the festival of Chhath. Most of the trains are crammed due to the huge rush of people going to Bihar from Ranchi."The three special trains, introduced when waiting lists in various trains going via these (Katihar, Saharsa and Yeswantpur) junctions, were huge and passengers on these destinations were left high and dry. "Most of the passengers had to go to Patna and then go to Katihar as direct trains are not available," said Chotanagpur Passengers Association vice-president Ashok Nagpal.A large number of people from Bihar, who live in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad and other cities for jobs, usually go to their native places in Chhat. The rush has caused acute scarcity of seats in the special trains as well. Though the railway officials concerned failed provide the exact number of seats availability in the special trains, sources in the railway reservation counter said on Saturday there were about 50 passengers in the waiting lists in the Ranchi-Saharsa Chhat special. Seats are also not available in any of its AC3 and one AC2 coaches. |
