MUMBAI: Western Railway has decided to set aside certain ticket-booking windows, exclusively for women, senior citizens and physically challenged commuters. As a pilot project, such a window has been opened at three stations.

"Those commuters have for long been demanding for such a facility. We have decided to experiment by opening such reserved counters at three stations, Borivli, Andheri (E) and Churchgate. If the move succeeds, similar arrangement can be extended to other stations," Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, WR.

Commuters as well as railway activists are happy with the decision. Activist Samir Zaveri, who is also physically challenged, said, "This will provide a huge relief to disabled commuters. Central Railway should also follow suit." Rajendra Shah, a senior citizen, said, "Most elderly people do not know how to operate ATVMs or CVMs. The separate counter will make life a little more comfortable for them."

Long after it has crossed the coast, cyclone Nilam continues to make its impact felt as torrential rainfall under its influence threatens to inundate outlying areas of two cities – Vijayawada and Eluru – in Andhra Pradesh.

Vijayawada received 17 cm of rain since Friday evening, constituting nearly 20 per cent of its annual rainfall. This has forced the authorities to suspend train and bus services.

Flood waters entered Vidhyadharapuram, HB Colony and Kabela in Vijayawada. Although the rain had stopped, water did not recede as Budameru, a stream, was discharging 8,000 cusecs of water. Drains in Vijayawada that empty into Budameru were blocked due to silting. Municipal Commissioner G. Bhaskar said that many areas in One Town were inundated as garbage had blocked the drains.

All the 70 gates of Prakasam Barrage across the Krishna were lifted and 49,000 cusecs of water was being discharged in the morning. The flow, however, came down to 29,000 cusecs by noon.

The threat of floods from Tammileru looms over Eluru and its surrounding areas forcing the district administration to requisition special rescue teams from the Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) at Mangalagiri. Collector G. Vanimohan told reporters here on Saturday that rescue teams of NDRF were expected to reach the city by evening. People from low-lying areas were being shifted as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the causeways across the Tammileru connecting the city at three points were closed for traffic since last night. Ms. Vanimohan said the flood situation may worsen by evening when water from Nagireddygudem reservoir and the catchment areas of Krishna were expected to the reach the city. Efforts were on to breach the river at two points to let out the flood water into the Upputeru creek so that it bypasses the city.

The Collector said the inflows from Nagireddygudem reservoir were likely to go up to 25,000-30,000 cusecs, unprecedented in the history of the Tammileru, by midnight.

Meanwhile, the Vijayawada Railway Division has cancelled some trains and diverted others via Guntur-Bibinagar as tracks were inundated between Kondapalli and Madhira. Trains diverted included: Train No. 12763 Tirupati-Secunderabad Padmavati Express is diverted to run via Tenali– Guntur –Nadikudi-Bibinagar.

Train No.12759 Chennai-Hyderabad Charminar Express is diverted to run via Tenali– Guntur –Nadikudi-Bibinagar. Train No. 12709 Gudur-Secunderabad Simhapuri Express is diverted to run via Tenali– Guntur –Nadikudi-Bibinagar. Train No. 12296 Patna-Banglore Sangamitra Express is diverted to run via Kazipet, Secunderabad, Raichur, Guntakal, Dharmavaram

Train No. 12296 Patna-Banglore Sangamitra Express has been diverted to run via Secunderabad, Kurnool Town, Dhone, Gooty and Dronachellam. Trains Cancelled on November 3 include- Train No. 57237 Kazipet-Vijayawada Passenger; Train No. 57238 Vijayawada-Kazipet Passenger; Train No. 57254 Vijayawada-Bhadrachalam Road Passenger; Train No. 57253 Bhadrachalam Road-Vijayawada Passenger; Train No. 67269 Kazipet-Dornakal Passenger; Train No. 67271 Dornakal-Vijayawada Passenger; Train No. 67273 Vijayawada-Guntur Passenger; Train No. 67274 Guntur-Vijayawada Passenger.

Chandigarh: Union Railway Minister and Member of Parliament from Chandigarh Pawan Kumar Bansal today promised to develop Chandigarh as an important hub for rail connectivity with important cities in the country and said the Chandigarh railway station would get a makeover. The minister got a rousing welcome at the airport from Congress workers on his maiden visit to the city after being allocated the Railways portfolio. Bansal assured that work on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail link would be speeded up and a train link between Chandigarh and Delhi via Yamunanagar would be set up. Besides, work on laying a double track between Chandigarh and Ambala would also be speeded up.“As an MP, I have been pushing for fast trains between Chandigarh and Delhi,” he said, adding that general hygiene and passenger-oriented services at the Chandigarh railway station would be upgraded. Refusing to give a time frame in which the facilities would be provided at the station, he said, “There is already an improvement on platform No. 2. I will see to it that things are put in place at the station at the earliest,” he said.The Chandigarh station is among five stations selected for being developed as world-class stations. “I will look into the demand for trains to Haridwar, Thiruvananthapuram and other places of the country. I will also look into the demand for a rail link to Baddi,” he said.The minister said he would consider the demand for starting another Shatabdi Express between Chandigarh and Delhi.“Though my priority will be the overall development of all regions in the country, I will look into the pending projects concerning Chandigarh. I have earlier also taken up issues regarding Chandigarh,” he said.

Rousing welcome

To welcome the Union Railway Minister, a large number of Congress workers, armed with marigold garlands and bedecked vehicles, had gathered at the arrival terminal of the airport. Soon after the Bansal's convoy reached his Sector 28 house, a large number of well-wishers thronged his house to congratulate him. Crackers were burst and sweets distributed to welcome the minister on his maiden visit to the city after taking over as the Railway Minister.

Continuing its drive against commuters without tickets, South East Central Railway, Bilaspur Division launched a massive ticket checking drive at Jairamnagar station.Railways officials said that under the leadership of Kishore Nikhare, assistant commercial manager, Bilaspur Division, collected fines to the tune of over Rs 73,000 from 322 cases. The checking was carried out in 17 different trains under the campaign. In the meantime, the assistant commercial manager appealed commuters with super fast Monthly Season Ticket (MST) and other MST to travel only in general compartment.According to the direction of Divisional Railway Manager, officials of railway frequently launched ticket checking drive in Jairamnagar station. The main objective of such campaigns is to maintain discipline and control movement of passengers without valid tickets.Meanwhile, the division has collected fine of over Rs 29,000 from 104 commuters travelling without ticket, around Rs 38,000 from 116 passengers travelling with invalid ticket and about Rs 5,500 from 102 cases of invalid luggage booking. As a result of frequent ticket checking drive, 15 per cent hike in ticket selling has been marked in the division, claimed officials of Bilaspur Division, adding that assistant commercial manager accompanied with chief ticket inspector PC Majhi and VK Sinha, 11 jawans of Railway Protection Force and 19 ticket checking staffs smoothly executed massive ticket checking campaign. Officials called upon public to travel with valid ticket and purchase platform ticket before entering inside the railway station.
