GOLAGHAT, Oct 30 – The Golaghat unit of the All Assam Students’ Union blocked the Down Amritsar Express for two hours recently at Furkating railway junction in Golaghat district in protest against the non-stoppage of Rajdhani Express and two other trains, besides other demands.
The rail roko programme was withdrawn following an Assurance by Northeast Frontier Railway assistant commercial manager, Dibrugarh, Jacob Mathews, for arranging a meeting with the general manager and other district administration officials at Golaghat.

Raju Phukan, president AASU Golaghat district committee expressed the people of Golaghat district by not having stops for Rajdhani Express, Dibrugarh-Calcutta Express and Jhajhar Express in any of the stations inthe district. The other demands of the students union include a foot overbridge, parking area and toilet for women at Furkating station and construction of an overbridge on Golaghat-Furkating road near the railway junction. The union also demanded the develop a playground near the station.

The vice-president of the Sarupathar Chambers of Commerce, Dinesh Agrawalla also said that the people wanted more passenger trains connecting Guwahati and upper Assam stations as there was no bus service from Sarupathar, except for an irregular Assam State Transport Corporation bus service.

Train services between Tatanagar and Howrah under South Eastern Railway (SER) were disrupted for more than two hours on Tuesday morning after a goods train developed a mechanical snag. Movement of trains on the down line came to a complete halt around 9am after the coupling between two wagons of the goods train, heading for Dankuni in Bengal, broke as it reached Salgajhuri, about 10km from Tatanagar. As a result, several long-distance passenger trains, including Howrah-bound Geetanjali Express and Ahmedabad Express, were stuck at Tatanagar. Ajmer-Santragachi Express was also held up. The carriage staff from Tatanagar rushed to Salgajhuri. However, they failed to fix the snag and the train was detached into two parts. While the first few wagons were taken to Asanboni, the rear ones headed for nearby railway yard after which rail services resumed around 11.20am.

NEW DELHI: The derailment of a goods train near Palwal in Haryana and early morning smog disrupted the schedules of more than 30 trains entering and leaving the capital. The derailment was reported around 1.10 am on Wednesday. Northern Railway sources said the engine and a coach of the goods train had derailed due to technical reasons but no one was injured. Of the three rail lines at Palwal station, the first was restored at 5.10 am. The other two were cleared for use around 10.55 am.Five trains — Ferozepur-Mumbai Express, Chhattisgarh Express, Swarn Jayanti Express, Udyan Abha Toofan Express and Amritsar-Mumbai Golden Temple Express — were diverted on the Ghaziabad-Tundla-Agra section while six, including the Agra-Palwal passenger and Mathura-Ghaziabad passenger, were cancelled.The schedule of six trains — including Niazamuddin-Coimbatore Express, Hazrat Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangla Express and Nizamuddin-Yashwantpur Karnataka Express — were rescheduled. Local EMU services were the worst hit and people were forced to use buses. Severe jams were reported in the morning from the Old Faridabad area.Railways have decided to use more than 500 fog safety devices for trains to tackle fog this winter. Northern Railway has already acquired most of these devices.
