Highways department on Friday began preliminary works for finalising the land plan schedule for the construction of a new road overbridge (ROB) across the railway level-crossing near Periyar Nagar on the Thiruvanaikovil Trunk Road in the city.

The new four-lane ROB will replace the existing narrow two-lane bridge that has turned traffic bottleneck in Srirangam.

The State government has already accorded administrative sanction for the new bridge at an estimated cost of Rs.43 crore.

Right of way

The design for the new ROB is under preparation and on Friday highways department officials carried out the task of marking the centre line and assessing the right of way.

Sources in the department termed it a preliminary work and indicated that the actual commencement of the project is still some time away.

The State government, they pointed out, has taken a policy decision to take up construction of new ROBs only after acquiring the required lands as several projects taken up during the previous regime have been impeded owing to delay in completing the land acquisition.

Besides, the construction of new ROB near Periyar Nagar could be taken up only after the completion of the ROB currently under construction on the Oyamari Road along the Cauvery bank.

The project again has been stalled midway through owing to the delay in completing the land acquisition.

Papers for the land acquisition plan are said to be awaiting clearance from the Commissioner of Land Administration.

Traffic diversion

Only after this bridge was ready, the sources pointed out, construction of the ROB at Periyar Nagar could commence as the traffic had to be diverted via Oyamari Road.

The sources also indicated that the existing bridge at Periyar Nagar would be completely dismantled to make way for the new ROB.

Though the new ROB was originally planned with six lanes, it has been revised to make it four-lane so as to restrict the extent of the land to be acquired.

Moreover, once the ROB at Oyamari Road was opened a major portion of the traffic is expected to go through this route.

A fresh survey has indicated that a four-lane bridge would be adequate to cater to the traffic volume at Periyar Nagar, they added.

New Delhi: Railways is set to make it mandatory for passengers travelling in non-AC sleeper class to carry identity proof as part of its efforts to check the widespread menace of transferred tickets sold by touts.

The decision to carry a valid I-card for train passengers in non-AC reserved class is being finalised and likely to be announced shortly, a senior Railway Ministry official said.



"This is being done to strengthen measures to keep a check on passengers travelling on transferred tickets," the official said.

Earlier in February, Railways had made it mandatory for AC class passengers to carry identity proof with them. Passengers travelling on a Tatkal or an e-ticket are also required to carry I-cards while undertaking train journey.

लखनऊ: चारबाग स्टेशन पर आने वाले संदिग्धों की निगरानी के लिए लगे खुफिया कैमरे के नीचे खड़े होकर एक व्यक्ति ने सिटी कंट्रोल रूम को फोन कर दिया। दो बार उसने एक घंटे के भीतर उसी फोन से रेलवे स्टेशन उड़ाने की धमकी दी। सूचना पाकर जीआरपी, आरपीएफ, जिला पुलिस और पीएसी के जवान बम निरोधक दस्ते के साथ मौके पर पहुंचे। कई जगहों की तलाशी के बाद पता चला कि यह किसी शरारती तत्व की शरारत थी। चारबाग स्टेशन के प्रथम श्रेणी पोर्टिको के भीतर बने इंक्वायरी काउंटर के पास सिक्के डालकर बात करने वाला फोन बॉक्स लगा है। इस बॉक्स के ठीक ऊपर रेलवे सुरक्षा बल का खुफिया स्टिल कैमरा लगा हुआ है। सुबह नौ बजे किसी शरारती तत्व ने इस फोन नंबर 2635923 से सिटी कंट्रोल रूम को स्टेशन उड़ाने की धमकी दी। सूचना जीआरपी कंट्रोल रूम के पास आते ही एसपी रेलवे डॉ. मनोज कुमार, आरपीएफ, जीआरपी और पीएसी के जवान श्वान व बम निरोधक दस्ते मौके पर पहुंचे। जिस जगह से टेलीफोन किया गया था, वहां आसपास पूछताछ की गई। एक घंटे तक पार्सल घर, रेल डाक सेवा, सभी प्लेटफार्मो और दून एक्सप्रेस सहित कई ट्रेनों की सघन तलाशी ली गई। सूचना गलत पाए जाने पर अभी सुरक्षा बलों ने राहत की सांस ली ही थी कि एक घंटे बाद 10:05 बजे एक बार फिर इसी नंबर से जीआरपी थाने पर फोन आया। इस बार भी इस व्यक्ति ने अपना नाम सुमित ठाकुर बताते हुए बम से स्टेशन उड़ाने की धमकी दी। सूचना पाकर जीआरपी उपनिरीक्षक कुवर बहादुर सिंह और क्षितिज त्रिपाठी जवानों के साथ मौके पर पहुंचे तो वहां कोई नहीं मिला। रेलवे सुरक्षा बल के कंट्रोल रूम से पता चला कि जिस जगह से वह व्यक्ति फोन कर रहा था, उसके ठीक ऊपर एक स्टिल कैमरा लगा हुआ था। इस कारण नीचे फोन बॉक्स के आसपास की गतिविधियां दिखाई ही नहीं दीं

KOLKATA, AUG. 19:  Now you can book movie, bus, rail and air tickets using your mobile wallet (M-wallet).

My Mobile Payments Ltd (MMPL), which retails M-wallet services, plans to tie up with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC), various airlines as well as multiplex operators to offer booking services to its customers.

M-wallet service, provided under the ‘Money-on-Mobile’ brand, is like a prepaid debit card on mobile. It allows customers to load their mobile phones with cash at retail touch points and use this virtual money to top-up any prepaid mobile or DTH (satellite television) recharge or pay post-paid mobile bills and utility bills at present.

According to Shashank M. Joshi, Managing Director, MMPL, a larger bouquet of offerings will be rolled out by September 15.

The company claims to have a network of 95,000 retailers across the country and a subscriber base of nearly five lakh recording nearly Rs 2 crore worth of transactions a day.

MMPL now plans to expand the retailer base to 5 lakh in next two years. The over-900 million mobile phone subscriber base provides an opportunity for business growth, he pointed out.

BUSINESS MODEL

Based on the demand for each of its service, MMPL typically buys out the inventory of the companies it ties up with, in advance.

“During long weekends, the demand for our services increase manifold, so our investment on inventory also increases,” he said.

MMPL, Joshi said, was well capitalised to invest on inventories. The company recently received a strategic investment of around $29.7 million (little over Rs 150 crore at current exchange rate) from US-based Calpian.

Depending on the kind of services provided, the company earns a margin of 2.5-4 per cent.
