Kochi: The newly-launched Punalur-Guruvayur fast passenger train service is a hit among passengers and the railways is considering a proposal to introduce two sleeper coaches in the daily train running at peak hour.

The Railway Board is likely to give its nod soon. Already, the Madurai-Kollam passenger has the reservation facility”.

The initiative was taken in the wake of many enquiries, particularly from elderly people, travelling to Guruvayur.

The timing is convenient for devotees to avoid overnight stay and is useful for office-goers.

The train covers the Thrissur-Kottayam stretch in the morning peak hour, said Suresh, who is also the minister of state for labour.

The train covers 294.6 km and has 27 halts. Train No 56366 Punalur-Guruvayur departs at 5.30 p.m. and arrives at the destination at 2.15 a.m.

Similarly, Train No 56365 Guruvayur-Punalur departs from Guruvayur at 6 a.m. and reaches the destination at 2.30 p.m.

The railway police has asked for a list of firms and employees engaged in loading parcels on trains at Mumbai Central. But WR refused to give details, saying police has no right to seek such information.

The Western Railway (WR) has crossed swords with the railway police over its demand for details of cargo operators and the parcels loaded at Mumbai Central terminus. The railway police has asked for a list of firms and the employees engaged in loading parcels on long-distance trains at Mumbai Central and the parcels that passed through the terminus between January 1 and August 31 this year. But WR has refused to give the details, saying the police has no right to seek such information. Rajendra Trivedi, senior inspector with Mumbai Central railway police, said they required this information in connection with the investigation of gutkha smuggling.

The information was sought by September 30, and the railway police has in a letter to WR warned of legal action against railway officials for not providing the information.

WR officials said that while the police had every right to inspect any parcel if they had information of illegal contents, asking for details of companies that were on contract to collect and load parcels, under the railways’ leaseholding policy, right down to the names of porters, was asking for too much.

An average 190 tonnes of parcels comes into Mumbai Central and about 200 tonnes goes out on trains from the terminus daily and WR earns about Rs40 crore from this business annually.  “We ourselves check some 20% of all the parcels being loaded,” said a railway official. “The railway police, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are free to do so according to the rules.”

This matter has been brewing since the police told WR that it would not allow trucks which were not registered in Mumbai to enter the Mumbai Central terminus. This agitated railway officials as a large number of parcels are from places outside Mumbai, like Bhayandar and Bhiwandi, from where cargo companies bring the parcels in their trucks. WR officials complained to railway police commissioner, Prabhat Kumar, against the diktat.

In July, four trucks carrying bags containing cash and gold and diamond jewellery were seized in a joint operation by the National Investigation Agency and the Income Tax department.

But now, in less than the decade, the city will have its very own metro line that will make the commute faster and smoother.

On Monday, the Maharashtra government gave its nod to the first phase of the much awaited Metro project. The project will get 10 per cent funding by the Pune Municipal Corporation and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, the state and the centre will chip in with 20 per cent each while the remaining 50 per cent cost will be borne by the private partner.

The metro will be over and underground in parts. The first 16.59 km will run from Swargate, the hub for the public transport buses to Pimpri Chinchwad while the second route of 14.92 will go from Vanaz to Ramwadi. The project, which was long delayed, is expected to cost over Rs.2000 crore more than the initial estimate budget because of the delays. The cost of construction and materials was calculated and estimated in 2009 and the budgets have significantly increased since then.

The part elevated and part underground line from Swargate to Pimpri Chinchwad will have 15 stations along the route, ensuring better connectivity for commuters. Some of the key locations along the route where the train will stop are Mandai, Budhwar Peth, PMC building, Shivajinagar, Khadki and Bhosari before it reaches Pimpri Chinchwad, a fast developing suburb of Pune city. Puneites, however, will have to wait. The first corridor, to be made at an estimated cost of Rs.6960 crore, will be ready only by 2021.

The government’s approval brought much cheer to city commuters who travel long hours through fast burgeoning traffic snarls. The project now awaits the nod of the central government.

Southern Railway is introducing a daily service between Chennai Central and Palani starting October 1.A press release said the inaugural special train No. 06002 will leave Palani at 16:00 hours on October 1 and arrive in Chennai Central at 02.30 hours. The regular service of the train No.16001 Chennai Central – Palani daily express will commence on October 1, and that of train No. 16002 Palani – Chennai Central will commence on October 2.Train No. 16001 Chennai Central – Palani daily express will leave Chennai Central at 21:00 hours and arrive in Palani at 8:00 hours the next day.Train 16002 Palani – Chennai Central Express will leave Palani at 18:00 hours and arrive at Chennai Central at 04:50 hours the next day. The composition of the train will be 1 AC 2-tier, 1 AC 3-tier, 7 Sleeper Class, 6 General Second Class and 2 Luggage-cum-break van coaches.The trains will stop at Arakonnam, Katpadi, Gudiyattam, Jolarpettai, Salem, Rasipuram, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Akkaraipatti, Oddanchatram and Chatrappatti. Train no. 16002 will stop at Perambur too.

Chandigarh: The weekly air-conditioned Amritsar-Lalkuan via Chandigarh train will be flagged off from the Chandigarh railway station 10 am on Wednesday.Former Union Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal will launch the train. Around 50 per cent tickets of the train have already been sold. The train will run on every Wednesday from both the directions. There will be 18 coaches, including 13 AC 3 tier coaches and three AC chair car coaches. The fare for the AC 3 tier will be Rs 605 and Rs 405 for the chair car from Chandigarh.Officials revealed that the response for the the maiden journey of the train was encouraging.The weekly train will depart on every Wednesday from Amritsar at 05:55 am and will reach Chandigarh at 10.20 am. The train will reach Lalkuan (Uttarakhand) at 8.50 pm. The train will halt at Beas, Jalandhar City, Phagwara, Ludhiana, New Morinda, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Chandigarh, Ambala Cantt, Jagadhari, Saharanpur, Roorkee, Laksar, Nazibabad, Moradabad and Kashipur stations. The train will leave Lalkuan every Wednesday at 11.15 pm. It will reach Chandigarh at 9 am the next day and Amritsar at 2.45 pm. The train will halt at Kashipur, Moradabad, Nazibabad, Laksar, Roorkee, Saharanpur, Jagadhari, Ambala Cantt, Chandigarh, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, New Morinda, Ludhiana, Phagwara, Jalandhar City and Beas.

Vintage engine

A vintage diesel engine will be placed at the entrance of the city railway station. The engine is stationed at the yard of the railway station. Former Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had proposed that the vintage engine would be placed on the premises of the railway station.
