Amritsar:A long-pending demand of the Sikh community residing in and around Nainital was today met as the weekly Amritsar-Lal Kuan AC Express was flagged off by Raj Kumar Verka, Vice-Chairman, National SC/ST Commission today.Nainital, also famous as Lake District of Uttarakhand, is about 25 km from Lal Kuan, one of its nagar panchayats.In all, 120 passengers boarded the train on its maiden run. The train would reach its destination via Chandigarh. Thus, the holy city also got its second train link with the state capital.The train has 18 coaches, including 13 AC 3-tier coaches, three AC chair car and two generator coaches. The fare will be Rs 850 and Rs 680 for AC 3-tier and chair car travel from Amritsar to Lal Kuan.It will depart from Amritsar at 5.55 am every Wednesday. Halting at Chandigarh at 10.20 am, it will reach Lal Kuan at 8.50 pm. En route Lal Kuan, it will halt at Beas, Jalandhar City, Phagwara, Ludhiana, New Morinda, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Chandigarh, Ambala Cantt, Jagadhari, Saharanpur, Roorkee, Laksar, Nazibabad, Moradabad and Kashipur .The train will leave Lal Kuan the same day at 11.15 pm, reach Chandigarh at 9 am the next day and Amritsar at 2.45 pm.

With dna taking up the complaint of railway commuters at Elphinstone Road station, Western Railways Mumbai divisional railway manager Shailendra Kumar on Monday afternoon cracked down on hawkers outside the station and promised action to improve the clogged approach-road to the station.

Commuters at the station in the west have been complaining of a bad approach-road littered with garbage and debris. The road has been taken up by hawkers completely, leaving no space for commuters to walk. The area outside Parel station in the east has been paved up by Central Railway and a proper walkway built there.

"There is utter chaos outside Elphinstone station with debris lying there, with the garbage bin open, with an uneven road, and slums and illegal stalls set up inside the railway premises. I had complained to everybody, but no action is ever taken. Even the space reserved for ambulance(s) has been encroached upon," Sanjay P Ghavate, a regular commuter said.

When dna had complained about hawkers to the senior divisional commissioner of Railway Protection Force a few months ago, hawkers from the bridge had come down to dna office requesting to get the complaint withdrawn.

With more and more offices setting up here, the crowd during peak hours has increased and commuters have to jostle for space while making their way out of the station through this stretch.

WR Mumbai's divisional manager Shailendra Kumar promised to improve the situation and began a crackdown on Monday afternoon with removal of hawkers and encroachers.

विजिलेंस की टीम सुबह लगभग 10.30 बजे जनशताब्दी एक्सप्रेस से पानीपत स्टेशन पहुंची। टीम में शामिल विनोद व रियाज अहमद ने सर्वप्रथम बुकिंग कार्यालय पर छापेमारी की। छापेमारी के दौरान एक रिजर्वेशन काउंटर का चुकता हिसाब सही नहीं पाया, जो पैसे कम मिले ड्यूटी पर तैनात रेलकर्मी से उसका चुकता करा लिया। रेलकर्मी को विभागीय चार्जशीट थमाने की बात कही जा रही है। विजिलेंस टीम ने बुकिंग कार्यालय के रिकार्ड भी चेक किए। रिजर्वेशन कतार में खड़े टिकट दलालों को जैसे ही छापे की भनक लगी वे फौरन वहां से भाग गए। एक टिकट दलाल रमेश को मौके पर मोलभाव करते धर दबोचा। आरपीएफ ने रेलवे एक्ट के तहत टिकट दलाल पर मामला दर्ज कर लिया।

विजिलेंस व आरपीएफ की संयुक्त कार्रवाई में स्टेशन परिसर में दो वेंडर दबोचे गए। अवैध तरीके से खानपान बेचने के आरोप में वेंडरों पर रेलवे एक्ट 144 के तहत मामला दर्ज कर लिया गया। टिकट दलाल व वेंडरों को बृहस्पतिवार को अदालत में पेश किया जाएगा।

The Highways Department has issued a work order for the construction of a Rs. 47-crore road overbridge, to replace level crossing 3 in Maattu Mandhai, Tiruvottiyur.

This is the second time a work order is being issued to a contractor for this project, which will improve connectivity between Tiruvottiyur and Manali. Last year, at around the same time, the work order had been issued to another contractor but he did not sign the agreement owing to some problems, and the order had to be cancelled.

Administrative sanction for the 550 metre-long, 13.2 metre-wide road overbridge (ROB) was issued sometime in 2011, officials said.

Sources in the department said the delay in finalising a contractor had occurred as many contractors had not evinced interest in the project, believing construction work in north Chennai to be somewhat difficult.

“Residents will demand work but not report for duty. They will not have the skills to work in the construction industry but will demand high wages. Incidents of theft at construction sites are also not uncommon,” said a contractor.

The tender for this project was finally settled after nine calls. Officials said the contractor has 24 months time to complete the work. The project is being jointly executed by the highways and Southern Railway, as 34.8 metres of the ROB will run over railway tracks. This portion will be constructed by Southern Railway.

Residents of Tiruvottiyur have expressed happiness over the settlement of the tender and are hoping the work will be completed on time.

V. Rajkumar, a local resident, said many projects, including widening of the Tiruvottiyur High Road have been delayed. “Once the ROB is constructed, it will help us reach 100 Feet Road faster. At present, we either have to take a circuitous route through Ernavur or wait for the railway gates to open, which sometimes takes quite a while,” he said.

Though the tender has been settled, land acquisition for the project is yet to be completed. A total of 1,640 sq. metres is required on the Manali side and 2,619 sq. metres on the Tiruvottiyur side.

“We need the land before we can commence construction work. As the ROB is coming up on an existing road, service lanes have to be formed to allow free flow of traffic. On the Manali side, the revenue department will soon finish the formalities and we will take possession in about 20 days. On the Tiruvottiyur side, plots of land belonging to three temples are required. Two temples have issued ‘no objection’ certificates, and we are waiting for the third one. Removal of encroachments also has to be carried out,” explained an official.

Punjab Congress vice-president and former legislator Rana KP Singh on Wednesday accused state industries and commerce minister Madan Mohan Mittal of claiming undue credit for the Anandpur Sahib-Nanded train that will begin its run on Thursday.Speaking with the media here, Rana said the credit belonged to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government first and then former railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal. The train would link Takht Kesgarh Sahib with Takht Hazur Sahib, following the efforts of  Anandpur Sahib member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu, he added."Since the Punjab government has no role in the starting of the train, Madan Mohan Mittal had no right to claim credit for it," said Rana. "The state leaders who accuse the Centre of discriminating against Punjab now claim credit for the Centre's projects," said the former legislator.The railway ministry had chosen MP Bittu to flag off the train from Anandpur Sahib on October 3, said Rana. The train will depart  from Nangal Dam at 4.20pm every Thursday and reach Anandpur Sahib at 4.38pm, Rupnagar at 5.16 pm, and Nanded on Friday (11.45pm) after passing through SAS Nagar, Chandigarh, Ambala, Panipat, New Delhi, Mathura, Agra Cantt, Gwalior, Jhansi, Beena junction, Bhopal, Habibganj, Itarsi, Khandwa, Malikpur, Akola junction, and Purna.

Minister of State for Railways K Surya Jaya Prakash Reddy called on Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday.They had detailed discussion regarding strengthening of Railway Network in the State and also regarding expediting work on Railways projects being commissioned in the State.The Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister said that Railways should look into the possibility of alternative route to link Baddi area with railway network, as it was very important keeping in view of the upcoming industrial and commercial complexes in Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh areas.Virbhadra Singh said that Bilaspur-Bhanupalli-Berri Railway Line should be taken up at earliest as the State Government would provide free Government land for this.He said that work on Nangal-Talwara Railway Line should be expedited as only 44 kms. Railway track has been constructed on this line from Nangal to Amb during last 33 years.

The Chief Minister also requested the Minister of State to provide adequate budget for survey on Ghanoli-Baddi-Kala Amb-Paonta Sahib-Deshradoon broad guage railway line and all other railway lines which were announced in the Railway budget.

Chief Minister said that Kalka-Shimla railway section should be well maintained as it was very important from tourism point of view and its historical significance.

Minister of State apprised the Chief Minister that a team from UNSECO would visit soon for inspection of Kalka-Shimla railway section.

MADURAI: The train schedule on Dindigul-Palani section has been altered to accommodate the recently introduced Palani-Chennai Central daily express. According to a statement from the Madurai railway division, timings of a few trains have been changed with effect from October 2.While 56776 Dindigul-Palani passenger will leave Dindigul at 4.20pm instead of 4.30pm and reach Palani at 5.40pm. Dindigul - Palani passenger (56774) will leave Dindigul at 3.15pm, instead of 3.20pm and reach Palani at 4.40pm. Palani-Madurai passenger (56709) will leave Palani at 5pm and reach Madurai at 8.15pm. Dindigul-Palani passenger (56772) and Palani-Dindigul passenger (56775) have been cancelled.
