riteshexpert | Railways to make high axle load bogie to carry 400 passengers on : October 03, 2013 - 03:59:01 AM |
NEW DELHI: To clear extra rush during peak hours, Railways is finalising plans to manufacture high axle load bogies which can carry up to 400 passengers.Plans are afoot to manufacture 120 coaches with increased axle load of bogies to carry higher load, a senior Railway Ministry official said.Currently, non-AC LHB (Linke Holfmann Busch) coach can carry the load of up to 250 passengers with a sitting capacity of about 90."But very often more than 250 passengers travel in a coach during rush hour and it has resulted in damage of the spring and other bogie parts," the official said, adding, "due to increasing load of passengers, Railways requires coaches with higher axle load bogies."LHB bogies have axle load up to 16 tons. According to the plan, it can be increased up to 19.5 ton which will enable Railways to carry up to 400 passengers.Railways requires about 120 such bogies to run at a maximum speed of 130 km per hour on high density route. It expects that the high capacity coaches will generate higher passenger revenue."The bogies with increased axle load can cater load up to 400 passengers per coach during peak season. These bogies will also have crash worthy design so that wheel sets do not come out from bogies during accidents and causing major damage," the official said. |

riteshexpert | 'Import coal from East Coast for power plants' on : October 03, 2013 - 05:59:23 AM |
VISAKHAPATNAM: Port operators on Tuesday urged the Indian Railways to review the 'Railway logistics plan' in order to route coal through the East Coast ports instead of the existing practice of hauling the cargo via ports in the West Coast.During a trade review meeting organised by the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), sources said that the operators raised the issue of the flawed logistics plan due to which thermal power plants are presently being supplied coal from the West Coast, resulting in longer transportation and higher costs. They pointed out that Chhattisgarh, for instance, is expected to generate nearly 30,000 MW of power by the end of the 12th five year plan, and operating through the East Coast would be more feasible and cut costs."Most power plants need to import coal from Indonesia and the nearest port to the power plants in Chhattisgarh is Visakhapatnam port. Instead they are going all the way to Mundra port in Gujarat or Mumbai port, which means the voyage time almost doubles," a senior port operator said.Explaining, he said that if a cargo vessel takes around seven to nine days to sail from Indonesia to Vizag, the same journey to Mumbai or Mundra takes around 15 to 16 days. Again from the West Coast ports to Chhattisgarh, the rail distance is around 2,000 to 2,200 km. "When you consider that nearly 40 million tonnes of coal is needed to be transported and the extra distance costs around Rs 1200 per tonne, the figure is mind-boggling. Eventually it's the consumer who ends up paying more for the charges," he added. |
