Kochi: The newly-launched Punalur-Guruvayur fast passenger train service is a hit among passengers and the railways is considering a proposal to introduce two sleeper coaches in the daily train running at peak hour.

The Railway Board is likely to give its nod soon. Already, the Madurai-Kollam passenger has the reservation facility”.

The initiative was taken in the wake of many enquiries, particularly from elderly people, travelling to Guruvayur.

The timing is convenient for devotees to avoid overnight stay and is useful for office-goers.

The train covers the Thrissur-Kottayam stretch in the morning peak hour, said Suresh, who is also the minister of state for labour.

The train covers 294.6 km and has 27 halts. Train No 56366 Punalur-Guruvayur departs at 5.30 p.m. and arrives at the destination at 2.15 a.m.

Similarly, Train No 56365 Guruvayur-Punalur departs from Guruvayur at 6 a.m. and reaches the destination at 2.30 p.m.

In the face of rising incidence of loot of passengers after drugging them, the East Coast Railways (ECoR) has launched a massive awareness programme among rail users and travellers.The RPF unit of Khurda Road Division conducted a programme at Berhampur railway station and distributed info-leaflets to passengers making them aware on activities of drug peddlers, snatchers and robbers moving in trains and stations.A mock rescue of a passenger drugged by miscreants in a train was also demonstrated. A street play ‘Bhul Hoigala’ was also presented, educating people how miscreants befriend innocent passengers, offer intoxicated eatable items and then loot them. The Railway security force has urged passengers not to take food, drinks and prasad which may have intoxicating elements from any co-passenger. It has also asked people not to buy railway tickets from the touts or any unauthorised agent.Passengers have been advised to immediately inform security personnel if they suspect the activities of anybody as well as unclaimed luggage in trains and platforms.

Meanwhile, ECoR has announced three more special trains between Puri and Santragachhi in Kolkata in view of increase in passenger flow during Durga Puja.

The Santragachhi-Puri Special train will leave Santragachhi at 7 pm on October 10 and arrive at Puri at 4.15 am on October 11. In the return direction, the train will leave Puri at 6.20 pm on October 11 and reach Santragachhi at 3.10 am on October 12.

The second Santragachhi-Puri Special train will leave Santragachhi at 08.30 am on October 13 and arrive at Puri at 5.10 pm on the same day. In return direction, it will leave Puri at 11 pm on October 13 and reach Santragachhi at 8.05 am next day.

The third train will leave Santragachhi at 7 pm on October 17 and arrive at Puri at 4.15 am on October 18. In the return direction, it will leave Puri at 5.30 am on October 18 and arrive at Santragachhi at 2.30 pm on the same day. The trains  will have stoppages at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kharagpur between Puri and Santragachhi.

MANGALORE: Trains from Mangalore will be affected as there will be a line block for 160 minutes from 12.40pm to 3pm on Wednesday; and from 12.40pm to 2.40pm Thursday and Friday in view of construction of a road over bridge between Tanur and Tirur on both up and down Lines.The pattern of service on Wednesday is as follows: Train No. 56324 Mangalore Central-Pallippuram Passenger Special will be terminated at Kozhikode and will run as train No. 56323 Passenger Special from Kozhikode to Mangalore Central. Train No. 12617 Ernakulam-Nizamuddin Mangala Express, Train No. 16650 Nageroil-Mangalore Parasuram Express, Train No. 16606 Kuttipuram-Mangalore Express Special and Train No. 16859 Egmore-Mangalore Express will be regulated for 30 minutes between Shoranur and Tirur.The pattern of service on Thursday and Friday is as follows: Train No. 56324 Mangalore Central-Pallippuram Passenger Special will be terminated at Kozhikode and will run as train No. 56323 Passenger Special from Kozhikode to Mangalore Central. Train No. 16650 Nageroil-Mangalore Parasuram Express and Train No. 16606 Kuttipuram-Mangalore Express Special will be regulated for 15 minutes between Kuttipuam and Tirur.

This is in addition to the train cancellation and regulation of trains in connection with Shoranur non interlocked working.

PHAGWARA: new train service connecting Hoshiarpur with Delhi was today flagged off from Hoshiarpur railway station.The Delhi-Hoshiarpur weekly express train, flagged off by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Santosh Chowdhary, will depart from Old Delhi station at 11.5 PM every Saturday to reach Hoshiarpur at 7.10 AM the next day.In the return direction, the express train will depart from Hoshiarpur on every Sunday at 10.30 PM to reach Old Delhi at 7.10 AM the next day.The train will have stoppages at Jalandhar Cantt, Phagwara, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt and Panipat, railway officials said.The train has one AC II tier, two AC III tier, five sleeper class, six second class coaches besides two second class disabled friendly coach cum luggage van.There was a demand for an express train for the region and with the introduction of the service, passengers have been provided a more comfortable and faster train services in the region, said a Northern Railway official.The one-side fare of the general coach is Rs 109. Besides the Minister, senior railway officials were present at the station on the flagging off ceremony.

The railway police has asked for a list of firms and employees engaged in loading parcels on trains at Mumbai Central. But WR refused to give details, saying police has no right to seek such information.

The Western Railway (WR) has crossed swords with the railway police over its demand for details of cargo operators and the parcels loaded at Mumbai Central terminus. The railway police has asked for a list of firms and the employees engaged in loading parcels on long-distance trains at Mumbai Central and the parcels that passed through the terminus between January 1 and August 31 this year. But WR has refused to give the details, saying the police has no right to seek such information. Rajendra Trivedi, senior inspector with Mumbai Central railway police, said they required this information in connection with the investigation of gutkha smuggling.

The information was sought by September 30, and the railway police has in a letter to WR warned of legal action against railway officials for not providing the information.

WR officials said that while the police had every right to inspect any parcel if they had information of illegal contents, asking for details of companies that were on contract to collect and load parcels, under the railways’ leaseholding policy, right down to the names of porters, was asking for too much.

An average 190 tonnes of parcels comes into Mumbai Central and about 200 tonnes goes out on trains from the terminus daily and WR earns about Rs40 crore from this business annually.  “We ourselves check some 20% of all the parcels being loaded,” said a railway official. “The railway police, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are free to do so according to the rules.”

This matter has been brewing since the police told WR that it would not allow trucks which were not registered in Mumbai to enter the Mumbai Central terminus. This agitated railway officials as a large number of parcels are from places outside Mumbai, like Bhayandar and Bhiwandi, from where cargo companies bring the parcels in their trucks. WR officials complained to railway police commissioner, Prabhat Kumar, against the diktat.

In July, four trucks carrying bags containing cash and gold and diamond jewellery were seized in a joint operation by the National Investigation Agency and the Income Tax department.
