The 12-member delegation of Lok Sabha Committee on Estimate that arrived here yesterday met top officials of various Government Departments of Manipur including Ministry of Textiles on Monday to discuss various Central sponsored projects, especially Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal rail link undertaken in the state.State Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga and other top officials of various Government Departments including Forest, Transport, Revenue and Commerce and Industries attended the meeting held at Hotel Classic here.The meeting discussed various projects now undertaken in the state under the sponsorship of the Central Government, but prominently the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal rail line and performance of North East Frontier Railways (NEFR), official sources said.The Lok Sabha Committee on Estimate also gathered a detailed report from the officials of Ministry of Textiles on Manipur’s textile projects funded by the Centre and enquired about further requirements of these projects during the meeting.“We emphasize on the railway project during the meeting,” Francisco Sardinha, chairman of the committee told newsmen after the meeting.Fransico further said coordination among various Government Departments of the state is needed to meet the 2016 target set to complete the railway project.

Asked if the Lok Sabha Committee on Estimate is satisfied with the current progress of the railway project, Francisco said they were partly satisfied and partly not, but there is certain impediment in the progress of the project and this would also be put up before the Railway Ministry.

The Government of India would be urged to take more steps to ensure the project finish on time and to provide all the further necessities so that the completion of the project is facilitated, he said.

A. Sampath, MP, will inaugurate a fast by elected representatives on Tuesday in protest against the alleged neglect of the Chirayinkeezhu railway station. HYDERABAD: Seven bogies of a goods train derailed at Vizianagaram railway station this evening, Government Railway Police said.

No one was injured in the mishap, they said. The incident occurred at around 6.45 pm at platform number 5.

One of the rails was broken, which probably caused seven bogies of the Raipur-bound goods train carrying gypsum to derail, according to the preliminary probe.

No one was injured and train movement was not affected as platform number 5 is meant only for goods trains, a GRP officer said.

NAGPUR: The Bombay High Court has issued notices to the Railway Minister and the senior personnel officer of South East Central Railway seeking reply on a petition regarding sports quota recruitment. The Nagpur bench of justices Vasanti Naik and Atul Chandurkar, which heard the petition last week, sought the replies within two weeks.

Petitioner Nagpur District Football Association has objected to a condition for recruitment of sportspersons as per the 2002 policy framed by the SECR. The condition requires that a candidate, to qualify for sports quota, must have actually played and merely being a part of the team would not suffice.

The Railways had issued an advertisement for recruitment in the sports quota last August.

Petitioner’s lawyer advocate Virat Mishra argued that the condition violates sportsperson’s fundamental rights and should be set aside.

Two stone idols were found abandoned in one of the unreserved coaches of the Tirunelveli-Mayiladuthurai passenger train at Mayiladuthurai Junction on Sunday night.The idols were found inside a sack ducked under one of the single seats of a compartment.A Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable and a railway staff noticed the abandoned idols inside the sack while checking the coaches after passengers alighted from the train.One of the idols was of Lord Saneeswara , while the other was that of an Amman . The idols were brought to the RPF post at Mayiladuthurai and handed over to revenue officials, railway sources said.

IMPHAL: A team of the estimate committee of Parliament comprising 12 MPs landed in Imphal on Sunday to study the progress of the ongoing Jiribam-Imphal rail project and the development of the textile industry in the state.Led by Francisco Sardinha, the team will acquire a detailed report from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on planning, implementation and performance of the rail project.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had in November 2004 laid the foundation stone of the rail project connecting Manipur's Jiribam subdivision bordering Assam and Tupul in Tamenglong district.Later, the project was extended to Imphal and there is a plan to further extend it up to Moreh to connect the region with Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries.During a plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) held recently in New Delhi, chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh urged the railway authorities to deploy more manpower and equipment and take early steps to ensure completion of the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal railway by 2017. Earlier, the completion target was extended from 2016 to 2017.

Construction of the rail line, which has been declared a national project, has been delayed owing to frequent agitations by tribals in the hills. Various tribal, civil and student organizations belonging to different communities have been banning central projects, including the rail line in Tamenglong district, off and on for the last few years in pursuit of their demands.

Before wrapping up its two-day visit, the parliamentary team will hold a meeting with officials of the NFR and the Manipur transport and forest departments on Monday to obtain the progress report on the rail project, official sources said.

At present, tunneling work is going on between Jiribam subdivision bordering Assam and Dolakhal, with various firms being engaged in the task, the sources said.

The parliamentary team will also hold a discussion with officials of the textile ministry on promotion of the textile industry in the state.
