The Chennai–Madurai Vaigai Express suffered a detention of more than two hours in Poongudi Railway Station near Tiruchi Junction because of engine failure on Friday.The Vaigai Express which reached Tiruchi Junction at the right time of 6.45 p.m. left for Madurai as per scheduled time.However, after crossing the starter signal at Tiruchi Junction, the train stopped all of a sudden because of loco failure. Diesel mechanics attended the failure, but could not rectify the defect. However, the train slowly moved to Poongudi railway station. |

The Udhagamandalam-Mettupalayam train was stopped for about 25 minutes after crossing Ketti owing to a branch falling on the track near Aruvankadu. Nilgiri Mountain Railway sources told The Hindu that the track was not damaged and the train proceeded after the branch was removed. |

South Western Railway will run two special passenger trains between Bangalore City and Tumkur on Sundays. These trains will commence operations from September 15.According to an SWR release, the Bangalore City–Tumkur Passenger Special (train no. 06221) will leave Bangalore at 9.20 a.m. and reach Tumkur at 11.05 a.m. In the return, Tumkur–Bangalore City Passenger Special (train no. 06222) will leave Tumkur at 11.20 a.m. and reach Bangalore City at 1.10 p.m.These special trains will run on the route and timings of Bangalore–Tumkur–Bangalore Passenger (train no. 56221/56222). |

LUCKNOW: Railway ministry has fast-tracked the plan to develop a multi-functional complex (MFC) in Amethi. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), coming under railway ministry, will develop 75 MFCs on railway land for generating revenue across the country.The bidding process is being initiated in phases. So far, RLDA has invited nine bids for development of 43 MFCs at prominent stations in the country. In UP, the bidding has been started only for Amethi. Sources said though other stations in the state have land available, they were not given the preference. TNnAllahabad is the only station where MFC has been completed and waiting to be leased out along with MFCs at 25 other stations in the country which were taken up last year.MFCs will have facilities like shopping, food stalls/restaurants, book stalls, ATMs, medicines and variety stores, budget hotels, parking etc., for rail passengers.A multi-functional complex project offers unique opportunity for retailers, hotel chain operators, developers and other such stakeholders for expanding and enlarging their footprint across hundreds of important towns and cities in the country. |

ALLAHABAD: Presiding over a meeting of officials of signal and telecommunication department, general manager, NCR, Alok Johri on Friday said signaling is among the most important departments of rail traffic. This is because in the present age, the new technology introduced for managing rail traffic in the country has proved very beneficial. The numbers of incidences of signal failure have come down drastically during last few years. Still, there is need for improvement, he said.On the occasion, chief signaling and telecommunication officer, Manmohan Garwhal also presented a powerpoint presentation apprising officials about the forthcoming plans and projects. He told NCR senior officials that there has been a 19% decline in incidences of signal failure. |

Gorakhpur: Residents of Tarang Crossing locality on Friday staged a protest and squatted on tracks demanding opening of the railway crossing gate. The protest stalled train movement on the route bringing Vaishali Express and a goods train to a halt for more than two hours. Police had to use force to disperse the protesters who fought a pitched battle and indulged in brick-batting. Seven protesters were later arrested.The protesters comprised mainly of residents from Humayunpur and Subhash Nagar area. They were demanding that the gate at the crossing be opened as they had to cover a long distance to reach other places.According to the reports, demonstrators stopped Vaishali Express from Delhi and a goods train. On being informed, RPF personnel were rushed to the site to disburse the mob. As the crowd swelled, RPF officials informed the civil police about the situation. ADM, city and SP, city, rushed to the site along with heavy police force.The officials tried to talk the demonstrators into allowing the train movement. As the latter refused to budge, the police resorted to lathi-charge. Infuriated mob resorted to pelting stone and fought a pitched battle with the police force for more than two hours.Seven protesters were arrested by the police for disturbing law and order situation.ADM, city, Badri Nath Singh said "people were agitated as they had to cover a long distance to reach places as railway overbridge (RoB) has been constructed. As per rule, crossing gates are closed after RoB is constructed over a crossing. However, closure of gates is causing problem for the residents of the area." |
