Users of Windows devices will now have “anytime, anywhere” access for booking e-tickets for rail journeys, with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) having launched a new application in collaboration with Microsoft Corporation.The additional e-ticketing channel will have all website services of the IRCTC portal, while offering a few exclusive services to app users such as visual maps of train routes. Other features will include Windows Phone live tiles (lighting up as train tickets) and access to saved traveler profiles from multiple devices.The application was launched at a function on Thursday by IRCTC managing director Rakesh Tandon and general manager of Microsoft Corporation (developer and platform evangelism) Joseph Landes.Windows Phone, Windows 8 desktop/tab users can download this application from the Windows Phone Store and Windows Store. The application is free of charge.Using this new app one can perform all the tasks already available on the IRCTC website. It will be available throughout the day except for 0800 — 1200 hours and 2330 — 0030 hours, as per the existing railway guidelines. |

Construction work on the much awaited Dwarka – Najafgarh Metro corridor started today on the elevated section of the corridor between Dwarka and Najafgarh depot. On this occasion, a bhoomi pujan was done by DMRC.The Dwarka – Najafgarh section will be 4.4 kilometres long with three stations. The length of the elevated section will be 2.75 kilometres; the ramp towards the underground section will be 595 metres while the underground section will be 1.085 kilometres long.The three stations on the corridor will be – Dwarka (elevated), Najafgarh Depot (elevated) and Municipal Corporation (underground). There was a public demand to take the Metro towards the Dhansa bus stand in Najafgarh which would be possible only by making the last station of the corridor as underground.The construction of an elevated corridor would have resulted in the demolition of a lot of buildings. In order to meet the public demand and avoid such inconvenience to the people, the last part of the alignment is planned to be made as underground.The entire stretch will be on broad gauge and will be opened for commuter operations by December, 2016. In 2016, about 76,000 commuters are expected to travel by this corridor. By the year 2021-22, the ridership is expected to increase to over 1 lakh passengers everyday. |

Several city residents, who hail from UP, MP and Bihar, are finding it hard to get confirmed tickets for their journey back home. Dhananjay Kumar, an employee of an automobile parts factory who hails from Bihar: "I am planning to go home in October, to celebrate Diwali. I tried to book tickets for the same online, but found that the waiting list for 3-tier AC class is more than 50 for any train." |

Palakkad: Many trains plying towards the Malabar region will be cancelled following doubling of rail lines on the Shornur-Mangalore route. Passenger trains will not ply during doubling works while a few Express trains will be partially cancelled. This will come into force from September 25. The non-interlock works at the Shornur station, as part of doubling works, will be completed in about 22 days.During the days of work, some passenger trains would be allowed but railway is planning to allow only goods trains and avoid passenger trains. During those 21 days, the Ernad, Janashathabdi and Venad expresses will end service at Thrissur.Bilaspur, Korba, Ahalyanagar, Gorakpur, Bokaro, Sabari expresses will not touch Shoranur junction. Nilambur train will have only one service. A passenger train will ply from Coimbatore till Palakkad for the benefit of passengers from Tamil Nadu. The cancellation of services during pooja holidays and Bakrid would affect the common man. As there is hike in bus charges due to fuel price hike, majority depend on passenger trains for travel. |
