Construction work on the much awaited Dwarka – Najafgarh Metro corridor started today on the elevated section of the corridor between Dwarka and Najafgarh depot. On this occasion, a bhoomi pujan was done by DMRC.The Dwarka – Najafgarh section will be 4.4 kilometres long with three stations. The length of the elevated section will be 2.75 kilometres; the ramp towards the underground section will be 595 metres while the underground section will be 1.085 kilometres long. The three stations on the corridor will be – Dwarka (elevated), Najafgarh Depot (elevated) and Municipal Corporation (underground). There was a public demand to take the Metro towards the Dhansa bus stand in Najafgarh which would be possible only by making the last station of the corridor as underground. The construction of an elevated corridor would have resulted in the demolition of a lot of buildings. In order to meet the public demand and avoid such inconvenience to the people, the last part of the alignment is planned to be made as underground. The entire stretch will be on broad gauge and will be opened for commuter operations by December, 2016. In 2016, about 76,000 commuters are expected to travel by this corridor. By the year 2021-22, the ridership is expected to increase to over 1 lakh passengers everyday. | ||
