A barter agreement between the Western Railway (WR) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over land on the north-eastern fringes of Borivli station could emerge as a huge relief for lakhs of commuters who travel from beyond Borivli towards Churchgate.WR requires a plot of land no wider than 6 metres and around 24 metres long to align its tracks such that long-distance and suburban trains coming from the Virar-end don’t need to wait at the northern end of Borivli before being allotted a platform to enter.Speaking to dna, divisional railway manager (Mumbai Central) Shailendra Kumar said that an agreement has been worked out under which the BMC will give WR the plot and, in turn, the WR, too, will give BMC a plot of land close by so that the latter can widen the road running along the east of Borivli station.“It is a win-win situation. For commuters, too, it’s a relief as we will be able to streamline train-running in the northern tip of Borivli and save considerable time,” said Kumar.A lot of long-distance trains headed to Mumbai Central enter city in the morning, which is rush hour for suburban trains. With many of these trains having 24 coaches, the wait for trains to be allotted a platform could be as high as seven to 10 minutes. A seven-minute delay during rush hour means anywhere between two and three trains getting delayed, the cascading effect delaying another 10-odd suburban trains.

According to the plan prepared by WR’s Mumbai division, if they get the plot of land running along MG Road adjoining the railway boundary on the north-east of Borivli station, track number 6 which currently ends hundred metres north of Borivli can be extended and given a connection called a ‘crossover’ in railway lingo with track number 5, which is the line used by ‘fast’ trains coming into Borivli station from the Virar-end. Farther north, line 5 has a connector with line 3 used by slow trains coming from Virar.

Union Minister of Tribal Affairs V K Deo's demand to shift East Coast Zonal Headquarters (ECoR) of the Railways from here to Vishakhapatanam sparked protests in Odisha with the ruling BJD announcing agitations and BJP criticizing it today.

Deo in a recent letter to A K Antony headed committee, which is looking into the demand for a zonal headquarters of Indian Rails, has suggested to shift the headquarters of ECoR to Vishakhapatnam.

The union minister while speaking to a local TV channel yesterday argued that Vishakhapatnam was situated at the Centre of the east coast between Kolkata and Chennai.

Deo also suggested that the South Eastern Zonal Railway Headquarters should be shifted from Kolkata to Bhubaneswar as "by no stretch of imagination can Kolkata be said to be any part of the South Eastern region."

Terming Deo's statement as a conspiracy against Odisha, Finance Minister Prasanna Acharya today said "I can't understand what the need for such a proposal is. We strongly condemn it and we'll raise voice if the Centre moves ahead with the idea."

BJD Youth Wing President Sanjay Dasburma announced that the party workers and supporters would hold peaceful one-hour agitation before all railway stations in the state on September 12, 13 and 14. "The people of Odisha will not tolerate such an idea of Deo as they have got the ECoR after a long struggle," he said.

"This is a conspiracy of the BJD and the Congress who have a tacit understanding to raise frivolous issues to divert people's attention from serious matters," a release issued by the state BJP said

Unnikrishnan (45) from  letting his art works go unnoticed. In fact, they now adorn the entrance wall of the South railway station, opposite  the Area Manager's office. “He is a born talent. His   disabilities and  poor financial condition of the  family didn't stop the artist in him. He can sketch anyone's face within five minutes…such is his talent,” said a top railway official.Jayakrishnan, who had studied in the Cochin School of Arts, drew various types of engines from steam engine to electrical one in his work depicted at the northern entrance of the Ernakulam Junction.“Besides he is a sculptor  too. His handiwork of the statue of an elephant using clay is displayed at the centre of the officers’ holiday home,” the official said. In fact, when it comes to artists in  railway uniforms, Unnikrishnan is not alone. Deputy Station Master P.K. Rajendran, Station Master Roy Thomas and D. Sudeep - all are fine artists though they find little time for the passion after  duty hours.“I’ve specialized in leaf painting which requires high concentration. Besides I’m also into making of  nettipatam  (elephant caparison),” Rajendran said. The exhibition of their works will be held  at the Ernakulam Main railway station on September 13 as part of the Onam celebrations.

New Delhi: The Himachal Pradesh Government today sought a special assistance from the Centre for development projects underway in the state and requested Rs 500 crore to strengthen infrastructure network.In his meeting with Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram here, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh also requested that the Chandigarh-Baddi railway line be declared as a project of national importance, considering the geographical and strategic importance.Virbhadra urged the Union Minister to speed up the work on the pending Bhanupalli-Bilaspur railway line and provide funds for the rail project at the earliest. He reminded Chidambaram that it was decided by the Prime Minister’s Office in August 2007 that the state government would provide 25 per cent of the funds and the rest by the Railways for the project.Since Independence, the state has seen the construction of just 44-km rail line. Referring to the report submitted by the Central team on the loss caused by floods in the state, Virbhadra asked the Centre to expedite early release of funds so that development work in the flood-affected areas could be undertaken.

To take the industrialisation process in the state forward, he requested that the industrial package be extended till 2020. He clarified that providing incentive to the state would not affect investment in neighbouring states and as against the proposal of Rs 48,000-crore investment, only Rs 14,000-crore investment by industrial houses had materialised.The state also requested the release of Rs 2,100 crore for the annual plan of 2013-14 in view of the financial constraints and the Planning Commission’s nod to enhanced funds for the plan period.

State Revenue Minister Kaul Singh and Industries Minister Mukesh Agnihotri accompanied the Chief Minister in the meeting.

In order to clear extra rush of passengers during ensuing festive occasions, South Eastern Railway (SER) has decided to run 17 pairs of fully air-conditioned special  trains with pantry car facility between Santragachi-Chennai and Santragachi-Mumbai(LTT) on different nominated days in between October 5 and December 2.

(08041) Santragachi-Chennai Weekly AC Superfast Special (nine pairs), leaving Santragachi every Saturday at 7 pm will reach Chennai at 10.45 pm the next day.  In the return direction, the train (08042) will leave Chennai at 7.50 am every Monday arriving Santragachi at 10.25 am, the next day. The AC Superfast Special train consisting of 15 coaches (AC 3 tier-7, AC 2 tier-4, 1st AC-1, Pantry Car-1 and Luggage Van-2) will have stoppages at Kharagpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar,Khurda Road, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Samalkot, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Ongole, Nellore & Gudur between Santragachi and Chennai.

(08060) Santragachi-Mumbai (LTT) Weekly Superfast AC Special (eight pairs), leaving Santragachi at 06.05 am every Wednesday will reach Mumbai (LTT) at 1.35 pm on the following day.  In the return direction; the special train (08059) will leave Mumbai (LTT) at 00.45 am every Friday arriving Santragachi at 08am on the next day. The Superfast AC special train consisting of 15 coaches (AC 3 tier-7, AC 2 tier-4, 1st AC-1, Pantry Car-1 and luggage van-2) will have stoppages at Kharagpur, Tatanagar, Chakradharpur, Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bilaspur, Raipur, Durga, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Badnera, Akola, Bhusawal, Manmad, Nasik, Igatpuri and  Kalyan between Santragachi and Mumbai(LTT).

This is in addition to 73 pairs of Puja Special Trains between Santragachi-Puri(9 pairs), Shalimar- Yeswantpur(8 pairs), Santragachi-Anand Vihar(8 pairs), Santragachi-Kochuveli( 9 pairs), Sealdah-Puri(7 pairs), Tata-Bhagalpur( 8 pairs), Hatia-Yeswantpur( 8 pairs) and Ranchi-Kathihar(16 pairs) which have been announced earlier by SER

Say that their dreams to get jobs in railways have come true

“My father is a private driver and my dream to get a job in a government department was fulfilled. Now, I can feed my family well and take care of my parents,” said G.V.S. Nalini Kumari, who completed her training for assistant loco pilot at the Electric Traction Training Centre (ETTC).Many girls from poor families who secured jobs in South Central Railway (SCR) expressed confidence of performing their duties perfectly in the locos.Eight women loco pilots completed training at the ETTC here and joined duty recently.

Satisfied lot

Nalini Kumari, a native of Bheemili in Visakhapatnam district, was selected as a loco pilot after she appeared for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) test.“I completed the diploma in electronics and communication engineering (ECE) and appeared for RRB examination. The encouragement from the staff in the training centre was good,” she said.“I always dreamt of working in a government department and succeeded in getting the job in SCR. My father, Surendra Pandit, is a medical practitioner. After Intermediate, I completed ITI in electronics at Gaya and applied for RRB,” recalled Seema, a native of Bihar. She said the profession is good and women can take it up confidently.

Childhood ambition

“My father, late Mauki Kerai, was a loco pilot. When I was a kid, I used to go along with my father to the railway station and request him to take me into the engine cabin. Now, I am happy that I got the same job and my ambition to land in a Central Government department was fulfilled,” said another loco pilot, K. Reena, of Odisha.Likewise, P. Lavanya, whose father is a labourer in Rajahmundry, B. Hymavathi of Kakinada, Ch. Sirisha of Mangalagiri and G. Sirisha of Visakhapatnam completed training at ETTC.

Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Pradeep Kumar praised the girls for taking up the job, which was dominated by men.South Central Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (SCRWWO) President Preeti Awasthi said the SCR should make separate arrangements for women pilots in the organisation.
