New Delhi : Mallikarjun Kharge assumed charge as the Union Minister of Railways here on Wednesday.Immediately after assuming the office, Kharge was briefed by Railway Board chairman Vinay Mittal, board members and senior officials on various important issues concerning the Railway Ministry, including the priority areas.Prior to this, Kharge was Union Minister of Labour and Employment. He is a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Gulbarga constituency in Karnataka.Kharge is a law graduate from Government College, Gulbarga, Karnataka University and is an advocate, social worker and agriculturist. He has had a long political career during which he has held several important portfolios. He was member, Karnataka state assembly for nine terms from 1972 to 2009.From 1979, he has served as Cabinet Minister, Government of Karnataka in various departments in varying spells. He was Cabinet Minister Revenue, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (1990-92), Cabinet Minister, Co-operation, Medium and Large Industries (1979), Cabinet Minister Revenue (1980-1983),Cabinet Minister Revenue, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (1990-92), Cabinet Minister, Cooperation, Medium and Large Industries (1992-94), Leader, Congress Legislature Party and Leader of Opposition, Karnataka (1996-99), Cabinet Minister, Home, Infrastructure Development and Minor Irrigation (1999-2004), Cabinet Minister, Water Resources and Transport (2004-2006), President, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (2005) and Leader of Congress Legislature Party and Leader of Opposition, Karnataka (2008-09).In the year 2009, Kharge was elected to 15th Lok Sabha. From May 31, 2009 onwards, he was Union Cabinet Minister of Labour and Employment. |

Members of Chatrapur Development Committee (CDC) held a demonstration in front of Chatrapur railway station demanding better amenities and stoppage of several express trains at Chatrapur station.It may be noted that Chatrapur is the district headquarters of Ganjam district. The agitation by the CDC had support of leaders of various political parties, organisations and citizens’ committee of Chatrapur. The much-awaited railway section linking Kashmir valley with rest of the country will be launched on June 26 when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will jointly flag off the first train. The 18-km-long section between Banihal in Jammu and Qazigund in Kashmir will provide an all-weather surface link to the Valley which often gets cut off from the rest of the country due to snowfall during winters. Northern Railway is coordinating with the Jammu and Kashmir government to arrange bus service from Uddhampur to Banihal for passengers to avail train service for the Valley. "The bus service will be available from Udhampur to facilitate passengers availing train from Banihal next month," a senior Northern Railway official said. The Banihal-Qazigund section, which includes an 11-km-long tunnel, will reduce the distance from 35 km (by road) to 18 km. It has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1,691 crore. |

Railways on Wednesday decided to press into service special trains to rescue people stranded due to the flash floods at Haridwar, Rishikesh and other areas.Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has instructed the Railway Board to do whatever possible to rescue people from the flood affected areas, said a senior Railway Ministry official.Special trains will be pressed into service from stations like Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar for stranded passengers. Moradabad division has been asked to arrange trains for the stranded passengers. Special counters will be opened at stations for these passengers, said the official.Passenger profile will be carried out to know their destination and accordingly train services will be launched, the official said. |
