MANGALORE: In its efforts towards promoting green solutions and providing eco-friendly transport solutions, Konkan Railway has taken a major step towards bio-degradation of night soil (human mull) by installing bio-toilets on its route.

Konkan Railway is the first railway in the country to have Bio-Toilets on railway station platforms. The technology while allowing eco-friendly and faster way of human waste disposal, is also economic. As a beginning, the Bio-Toilets have been installed by Konkan Railway at Chiplun and Kankawali stations on its route.

According to Vaishali Patange, Chief Public Relations Officer of KR, the Bio-Toilet is based on Bio-Digester technology developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization). The technology is 100% maintenance-free and allows complete elimination of pathogens without requiring the night soil to be disposed through sewage line and septic tank. Since it does not require septic tanks and sewage lines, the Bio-Toilets can be installed much faster than a regular RCC toilet. While the latter requires a minimum of two months for construction, the Bio-Toilet can be installed in just a couple of days. The saving in cost factor is also 70% less compared to a regular RCC toilet. While a conventional toilet would cost about Rs 1 lakh, the Bio-Toilet can be erected in only about Rs 30,000.

The Bio-Digester is charged initially with anaerobic bacterial inoculums and no further charging is required if the Bio-Toilet is in regular use. The bio-degradation of the night soil leads to generation of bio-gas which can be utilized for cooking purpose. The odour-less water extracted after bio-degradation can be used for irrigation of gardens etc.

The Bio-Toilets are being widely utilized by the defence forces in its remote areas and an MOU has been signed by Indian Railways in 2010 with DRDO to develop a Bio-Toilet system for use in railway coaches for improving environment around railway infrastructure. Konkan Railway is planning to cover other stations also with the technology.

Srinagar: A week before the proposed inauguration of the 18.5-km-long Qazigund-Banihal rail link by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Northern Circle Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) RK Kardam along with a group of senior railway officials have started the inspection of the track. The exercise is a prerequisite on a new track before a train runs on it.The two-day inspection begacsignal for opening the track for passenger trains,” said a senior railway official.Besides Kardam, other officials in the inspection team are Ferozpur Division railway manager NC Goyal, Northern Railway chief safety officer CBK Singh, senior divisional commercial manager UP Singh, a senior divisional signal and telecom engineer and chief area manager, Budgam, AK Sharma.The railway track between Qazigund village of Kulgam distict in south Kasmir to Banihal town of Ramban district in Jammu also passes through the 11.17-km Pir Panjal tunnel which is India's longest tunnel. It has been constructed by Hindustan Construction Company and has a 3-m wide road running parallel to it for movement of small vehicles in case of any emergency.“We have started the inspection on the track and will be completing it by tomorrow,” Ferozpur Division railway manager NC Goyal told the Tribune.The trial run on the rail link was completed in 30 minutes on December 25 last year.The trains of Kashmir are yet to be connected with the rest of the country and they ply between Qazigund and Baramulla covering a distance of 119 km. The first phase of the rail service in the Valley was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 11, 2008.

BETTER CONNECTIVITY ON THE ANVIL

* Currently, trains in Kashmir ply between Qazigund in south Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir

* The opening of the Qazigund-Banihal rail route will connect the Kashmir valley with the Jammu region

* However, trains from Kashmir will still not be able to reach other parts of the country as the railway stretch between Banihal and Udhampur in Jammu division is still under construction

* The Udampur-Banihal railway track is likely to be completed by 2017

INTRODUCTION OF SILAMBU (BI-WEEKLY) EXPRESS BETWEEN CHENNAI EGMORE AND MANAMADURAI

As announced by the Hon’ble Minister for Railways in the Railway Budget    2013-14, new bi-weekly trains will be inaugurated between Chennai Egmore and  Manamadurai.

            Thiru P. Chidambaram, Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance will flag off the inaugural special of MANAMADURAI – CHENNAI EGMORE SILAMBU EXPRESS at Manamadurai railway station at 20.15 hrs. o­n 22.6.2013, Central/State Ministers, MLAs and other dignitaries will participate.

            The inaugural special Manamadurai – Chennai Egmore will leave Manamadurai at 20.15 hrs. o­n 22.6.2013 and arrive Chennai Egmore the next day.

            The regular service of Train No.16181 will commence from 26.6.2013 ex. Chennai Egmore and from 27.6.2013 ex. Manamadurai.

            T.No.16181 Chennai Egmore – Manamadurai (Bi-weekly) Express will leave Chennai Egmore at 20.20 hrs. o­n Wednesdays/Saturdays and arrive Manamadurai at 07.45 hrs. the next day. Train No.16182 Manamadurai – Chennai Egmore (Bi-weekly) Express will leave Manamadurai at 20.15 hrs. o­n Thursdays/Sundays and arrive Chennai Egmore at 06.05 hrs. the next day.  The composition of the trains will be          1 AC 2-tier,  2 AC 3-tier, 6 Sleeper Class, 6 General Second Class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. The trains will stop at Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Melmaruvathur, Villupuram, Vridhachalam, Tiruchchirappalli, Pudukottai, Chettinad, Karaikkudi, Devekottai Road and Sivaganga. T.No.16182 will stop at Mambalam also.

AHMEDABAD: Western Railway with the help of Government Railway Police carried a drive against illegal ticket sellers at various railway stations under Ahmedabad division from 02 June to 15 June 2013.

Railway officials caught three people from New Bhuj, Sardargram and Chapi computerized reservation centres for selling illegal tickets. Railway recovered nine tickets from black marketers worth Rs 9,445. The railways in an effort to provide better service to passengers, Western Railway has come down heavily on the illegal travelers and touts. In a bid to stamp out ticketless travellers and touts, Western Railway conducted regular raids at Ahmedabad railway station and recovered more than Rs 7.5 crore.

Western Railway conducted regular checks in April and 1,78,235 cases of ticketless/irregular travel including unbooked luggage cases were detected. This resulted in a recovery of Rs 7.45 crore. Similarly, more than Rs 6 lakh was realized from 620 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets.

In recent times, Western Railway has got stricter in handling of touts and illegal travellers. More than 150 raids were carried out to nab touts running the illegal ticket syndicate. As many as 249 touts were detained and punished under the applicable sections of the Railway Act. The Railways ticketing system has always been rich grounds for touts to lure passengers.

Authorities have also deployed a 'Surakshini' squad at the station, to do away with beggars and unauthorized hawkers. In the last month, 1,023 beggars and illegal hawkers were apprehended. Of these, 654 were evicted, 354 were fined and 15 persons were sent to jail. Surakshini squads regularly remove beggars from the station.

हटिया रेलवे स्टेशन के आरक्षण केंद्र पर अनियमितता की शिकायत पर बुधवार को रेलवे निगरानी और सीबीआइ की भ्रष्टाचार निरोधक शाखा ने संयुक्त छापेमारी की। सुबह 10 बजे से लेकर देर रात नौ बजे तक चली छापेमारी में भारी अनियमितता सामने आई है। इसमें काउंटर पर ज्यादा टिकट सेल और पैसे कम मिले हैं। ग्राहकों के रिक्विजिशन स्लिप, तत्काल टिकटों में हेराफेरी, एक गाड़ी व कुछ कागजात भी जब्त किए गए हैं, जिसकी जांच हो रही है।
सीबीआइ की पूछताछ में बहुत सारी बातें सामने आई हैं। दलाल भी चिह्नित किए गए हैं। जांच एजेंसी के रडार पर रेलवे से जुड़े कई अधिकारी व कर्मचारी सामने आए हैं, जिसका सत्यापन हो रहा है।
रेलवे निगरानी व सीबीआई के हत्थे चढ़े दलालों में किशोर कुमार, विजय कुमार सिंह, साकेत, उदय शंकर शामिल हैं। वहीं, एक रेलकर्मी आरआर बाड़ा भी पकड़ा गया, जिससे पूछताछ की गई। पकड़े गये कर्मी बाड़ा के पास से काटे गये टिकट की राशि में अनियमितता के अलावा भरे हुए छह आवेदन फार्म बरामद किए गए। पूछताछ के क्रम में रेलकर्मी ने स्वीकार किया कि वह फार्म उसने एजेंट से लिये थे। ठोस सबूत न मिलने पर पांच आरोपियों से घंटोँ पूछताछ के बाद छोड़ दिया गया। जानकारी के अनुसार आरोपी रेलकर्मी पर जांच के बाद विभागीय कार्रवाई होगी।

जब दोनों टीमों की संयुक्त जांच चल रही थी उस वक्त कई रेलकर्मियों व सुरक्षाबल के जवानों को दूर रखा गया था। सूचना लीक न हो, इसके लिए विशेष एहतियात बरती जा रही थी। हर संवेदनशील व्यक्तियों पर नजर रखी गयी थी। इसके अलावा आरक्षण काउंटर के कम्प्यूटर से लेकर रजिस्ट्रार तक को देखा गया।

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUN 19:   General consultancy agreement for setting up monorail projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode was signed here on Wednesday.

Special purpose vehicle Kerala Monorail Corporation signed the agreement with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation at a ceremony at the State Assembly complex.

SEAMLESS TRAVEL

P.C. Harikesh, managing director, Kerala Monorail, and S.D. Sharma, director, business development, Delhi Metro, represented the respective parties.

As per terms, Delhi Metro will undertake all necessary works with respect to announcement, entertainment and assessment of contractor’s documents.

It will develop models for ‘seamless travel’ in consultation with Kerala Monorail featuring common ticketing and integration with Southern Railway, suburban and urban transport networks.

The cost of implementation of ‘seamless travel,’ which assures travel facility across these modes of transport, will be part of the project cost.

Delhi Metro will also recommend to Kerala Monorail a pre-qualified list for the latter’s acceptance.

It will prepare formal evaluation criteria and procedures for evaluation of the proposals; obtain approvals from Kerala Monorail; and assist it to invite bids from pre-qualified contractors.

PROPOSAL EVALUATION

Delhi Metro will also perform independent evaluation of all bid proposals for all contracts received, including ranking of bidders.

It will exercise all technical, financial and contract management powers and all proposals will be put up to Kerala Monorail for its final approval for taking appropriate decision.

Kerala Monorail will then oversee the quality assurance aspects, as considered necessary.

Delhi Metro will also be responsible for arranging funds for the project and payment to contractors/consultants upon certification.

Availability of all land will be ensured to the contractor in time. Widening of road from Mananchira to Meenchantha at Kozhikode and Kariavattom to Kesavadasapuram in Thiruvananthapuram will be completed at the earliest.

ROAD OVERBRIDGES

Delhi Metro will ensure completion of road overbridges at Panniyankara in Kozhikode and four flyovers at Sreekariyam, Ulloor, Pattom and Plamoodu in Thiruvananthapuram.

It will also provide all assistance in getting shifted in time utility services laid by various Government and non-Government organisations.

Details given in the detailed project report may be reviewed, if necessary, by the general consultant. It will also help Kerala Monorail with preparation of ‘request for qualification’ documents and inviting bids thereof.

The latter will get assistance for setting up pre-bid meetings and clarifications required, if any. Delhi Metro will evaluate technical bids and put up recommendations.

The general consultant will also assist Kerala Monorail with the process of inviting ‘request for qualification’ bids.

PUNE: The Pune Railway Division will start the construction work of setting up a new foot over bridge (FoB) at Pune railway station after the monsoon. The Pune Railway Divisional Manager (DRM), Vishal Agarwal, informed the members of the District Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) about the new project at a meeting on Tuesday. The Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Alok Badkul, and the additional DRM A B Medankar, were also present. This new FoB will come up on the Alankar cinema side of the station and shall connect platform 1 with 2 and 3. This FoB shall ease the pressure on the other foot over bridge used by commuters. According to Agarwal, the Pune division had earned Rs 774 crore during the last fiscal, including Rs 534.56 crore from sale of passenger tickets. During the last fiscal, the division had undertaken the expansion of platform number 6 at Pune station and constructed a foot over bridge at Chinchwad station. "We have also opened three new counters at the Pune railway station computerised reservation centre that will function even on Sundays till 10 pm,” Agarwal said. “During the summer, we plied 194 special trains to different destinations. We attached about 314 extra coaches to different trains originating from Pune," he added.
