| railgenie | Adarsh status remains on paper on : June 20, 2013 - 06:02:29 AM |
In the absence of any follow-up measure after last year’s budget announcement by the Railways to accord Adarsh status to Tiruverumbur station, the major station located on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur railway section presents a pathetic sight.Although a highly-patronised station, it is yet to get a footbridge and a host of amenities. Rail passengers still have to cross the tracks riskily. The danger caused by the absence of footbridge and inadequate lighting is prominently felt at night when passengers board the Rockfort Express and Mysore Express trains in large numbers. The only visible work is the construction of platform shelters.According to official sources, 50 trains cross the station every day in both directions and of them 30 stop at the station that is patronised largely by the public in BHEL Township, ordnance factory estate, Kattur, and residents of Thuvakudi. The footbridge project, initiated a few years ago, is still in progress. The station lacks basic amenities. Inadequacy of drinking water and lack of toilet facilities cause enormous discomfiture for passengers, says Anbalagan, spokesperson, Tiruverumbur Taluk Development Committee.Alongside platform shelters, drinking water facility and pay and use toilets, an Adarsh station ought to have electronic coach indication boards, spacious waiting room, passenger reservation system centre, ramps for benefit of the people with disabilities, connecting platforms, and cloak room. |

| nikhilndls | Yamuna above the danger mark in Delhi; 50 trains affected on : June 20, 2013 - 06:30:10 AM |
New Delhi: Several low-lying areas along the river Yamuna were on Wednesday flooded as the water level in the river was flowing two metres above the danger mark and inching towards touching the highest level of 207.49 metres. “The water level in the river rose to 207.12 metres which is 2.29 metres above the danger mark of 204.83 metres. The water level is likely to go up further,” a senior official of the flood control department said. The highest water level of 207.49 metres in Yamuna was recorded in 1978 when several areas in the city witnessed flash floods. The city government has asked the army to be on alert for helping the civil administration, if required. The river had crossed the danger level of 204.83 metres on Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to evacuate around 2,000 people from various low-lying areas in east Delhi like Usmanpur, Yamuna Bazar, Bhajanpura and Shastri Park and set up relief camps for their shelter. Officials said the water level is likely to go up further as Haryana released over 81,000 cusecs of water into Yamuna from the Hathnikund barrage on Wednesday. The neighbouring state had released eight lakh cusecs of water on Monday and 1.5 lakh cusecs on Tuesday. They said some low-lying areas near the river, including Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pusta and Jagatpur village were inundated by Yamuna waters. In the past 40 years, the city had witnessed floods in 1967, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1988, 1995 and 1998. The authorities have set up over 400 tents in four districts, including 240 in East, 100 in Southeast, 50 in Central and 30 in Northeast to accommodate the affected people. The 145-year-old Old Yamuna Bridge connecting east Delhi with the heart of the national capital, was shut for rail and road traffic on Tuesday after the water level in Yamuna rose dangerously. Services of over 50 trains were affected due to rising water level in the Yamuna, with Northern railway suspending train movement on the old bridge from Wednesday till further notice. |
| greatindian | Delay in starting train service to Katra hampers rly station makeover on : June 20, 2013 - 06:30:16 AM |
Jammu: The delay in the start of train service to Katra is hampering the up-gradation work of the Jammu Railway station. Neither the platforms nor the trains can be increased at the Jammu Tawi railway station till the train service reaches Katra.Train to Katra has been delayed by more than a year and the authorities are still not sure whether the July, 2013 deadline for the project can be met.Expansion of the Jammu railway station from three platforms to five has been rejected by the higher authorities, for which a proposal was sanctioned two years ago and funds were also released by the Union Railway Ministry. The only reason for rejecting the proposal was “when the train will go to Katra, three platforms will be sufficient for the Jammu Tawi railway station," said RN Meena, Divisional Traffic Manager (DTM), Jammu. He asaid the deadline may be extended as “the work on the a tunnel at Udhampur may take some more time,” he said.Meena admitted that the Jammu Tawi railway station does not have any off season as the trains from Jammu are always full of passengers. But the railways cannot increase the number of trains in Jammu as it has only three washing lines, and to increase the number of trains needs more washing lines. The railways are waiting for the Katra station to be functional as it has two washing lines."It takes more than six hours to check the train which needs to be parked in the washing line, if we increase the number of trains, we will have to increase the washing lines as well,” he said.“We have two washing lines at the Katra railway station, so it will be easy for us to maintain the extra number of trains when the Katra station starts funtioning,” he added. |
