CST-bound Harbour line trains from Navi Mumbai were delayed by around 45 minutes owing to a rail roko protest led by NCP MP Sanjeev Naik at Belapur railway station on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Naik was protesting against the lack of coordination between the City and the Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) and the Central Railway, that was leading to poorly maintained railway stations in Navi Mumbai. The protest started at around 1.30 pm when Mr Naik, followed by around 100 supporters, reached the station and blocked the CST bound track. Although no violence was reported, the protestors had occupied the track for the next half an hour. A 1.38 pm CST local was forced to stop, and finally let go around 2.15 pm. Heavy crowds were reported on platforms at Nerul, Sanpada and Vashi. The protestors were sloganeering against the Cidco and the CR, and demanded resignation of officials who had failed to resolve the deadlock between the two agencies. “CR aur Cidco hai hai. Sanjeev Naik aage badho. Hum tumhare saath hai (Down with Cidco and Central Railway. March ahead Sanjeev Naik. We are with you),” shouted the protestors, consisting mostly of local NCP party workers and leaders. They cleared the tracks after 45 minutes, and the 1.38 pm local, behind which a few other trains had lined up, finally left around 2.15 pm. Mr Naik then inspected the station and pointed out several infrastructural shortcomings. “Tiles are broken. The roof is leaking. It is a shame that swanky railway stations in Navi Mumbai have to see this day. Why should the people suffer for the lack of coordination between the two government bodies? They should resolve the issue and end this pointless administrative deadlock,” he said, while briefly speaking to mediapersons. The issue had been raging since early 2012 when Mr Naik had pointed towards the poorly maintained railway stations in Navi Mumbai. The railway officials demanded that the stations be transferred to them in a pristine and well-maintained condition. |

| riteshexpert | Konkan Railway introduces 'green' toilets on : June 20, 2013 - 06:01:26 AM |
Regular toilets will be replaced by eco-friendly bio-toilets for disposing human waste at all stations of the Konkan Railway (KR), an official said here Wednesday. Two railway stations, Chiplun and Kankavali on the KR route, had earlier been selected for installing the country's first green toilets to bio-degrade night soil through technology developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). "The technology, while permitting eco-friendly and quicker disposal of human waste, is also economical. Passengers and locals at both Chiplun and Kankavali have appreciated the efforts of the railways," the official said. Encouraged by the public response, KR has now decided to set up such toilets at all the major stations on its network. The bio-toilet uses the DRDO's bio-digester technology, which is economical and can be implemented faster than the regular RCC (reinforced concrete cement) toilets. "The technology is 100 percent maintenance-free and allows complete elimination of pathogens without requiring the night soil to be disposed through sewage line and septic tank," the official explained. Since the need for septic tanks and sewage lines has been eliminated in this technology, the bio-toilets can be installed and ready for use within just 48 hours, compared to two months for the conventional toilets. Even the cost savings on bio-toilets are high, as much as 70 percent, compared to regular toilets. While a regular toilet costs around Rs.100,000, a bio-toilet can be put up at just Rs.30,000. The bio-digester requires only an initial one-time charging with anaerobic bacterial inoculums if it is in regular use. The bio-degradation of the night soil leads to generation of bio-gas which can be utilised for cooking. The clean, odour-less water extracted after bio-degradation can be recycled for irrigation in gardens and other such places. The DRDO bio-toilets are being widely utilised by the defence forces in remote locations. The Indian Railways signed a memorandum of understanding with the DRDO in 2010 to develop a bio-toilet for use in railway coaches to improve the environment in and around the railway infrastructure. |
