Bhubaneswar, July 6: A half-an-hour’s spell of rainfall left various parts of the city, including the railway station and tracks here, heavily inundated this afternoon.
B. Sailaja, an IT professional, had to wade through almost knee-deep water to reach the platform No. 1 from the main booking counter building at the Bhubaneswar railway station today.
“I never experienced such a situation at the city’s main and most important railway station. Recently, I read in newspapers that the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi suffered a flood-like situation on June 16. I experienced almost similar situation at the railway station here today,” she said.
Tapan Kumar Samantray, who commutes between Jatni and Khurda Road railway stations everyday, said the Bhubaneswar railway station was water logged for more than 30 minutes this afternoon.
A senior official of the Indian Meteorological Department said the city today received 20.6mm of rainfall.
The heavy spell of shower caused problems for commuters on the nearby Janpath as well.
Long queues of vehicles were spotted stranded at Sriya Square and on the stretch from Ram Mandir to Gurudwara as these areas were under knee-deep water.
Chief public relations officer of East Coast Railway J.P. Mishra said:“We immediately pressed two teams into service. One cleaned the affected area frequented by passengers and restored normality within half an hour, while the second studied the impact of the heavy rainfall on tracks near the station and examined safety aspects as the tracks were also submerged in water.’’
Mishra also added that such a flood like situation at the railway station and on railway tracks occurred for the first time here as rainwater also came to the station from the nearby Ashok Nagar area.
“We have taken the issue seriously and will adopt necessary measures so that it does not happen again. We will also talk to the civic authorities regarding discharge of rainwater from the area,” he added.

With Lok Sabha elections due in 2014, the railways is racing ahead against time to fully operationalise the rail coach factory (RCF) in the Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli by June 2014. The railways is closely monitoring the progress of the RCF Rae Bareli ever since the ministry came back to the Congress after a gap of over 17 years. “The RCF Rae Bareli is doing interior furnishings of coaches currently. We are hopeful that by June 2014, the RCF will also start rolling out coaches,” said Mr Arunendra Kumar, the newly appointed chairman of the railway board (CRB). While the railways, while headed by the Trinamul Congress nominees — Mamata Banerjee, Dinesh Trivedi and Mukul Roy, had put the RCF Rae Bareli on low priority, the former rail minister Pawan Kumar Bansal fast tracked the big ticket project after assuming charge of the ministry. Mrs Gandhi had recently inaugurated the RCF Rae Bareli but the workshop is largely carrying out the interior furnishings on coaches provided by the RCF Kapurthala, said a senior official. After the exit of Mr Bansal from the ministry, his successor Mallikarjuna Kharge is learnt to be keeping a close eye on ensuring that the RCF Rae Bareli becomes fully functional soon. Apart from the RCF Rae Bareli, the railways is also undertaking expansion of other coach factories to meet growing demands for modern coaches. “We are seeking to add capacity in all factories to manufacture additional 200 coaches each,” said Mr Kumar. However, the fate of RCF Palakkad has not yet brightened despite being sanctioned along with the Rae Bareli project. The RCF Rae Bareli will exclusively manufacture LHB coaches, which are reckoned to be highly modern and less prone to accidents.

In a bid to make the crisis-hit airport metro service a commuter-friendly and financially viable one, Delhi Metro had sought commuters’ feedback. And within five days of its taking over from Reliance Infrastructure, which ran the trains till last Sunday, Delhi Metro is flooded with suggestions.More than 500 commuters have already suggested ways on how the Delhi Metro can improve the services on the Airport Express line. Most of them asked Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) - the new operator of the airport metro - to reduce fare, which was hiked in January by 50% and then again in March by Rs. 30.“We have received several suggestions through the newly-introduced feedback section in our website and feedback counters at Shivaji Stadium and Dwarka Sector 21 Metro stations.Most of them demanded fare rationalisation, while many suggested increase in train frequency, integration with Delhi Metro stations and increase in speed,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

“The major drawback of the line is the ticketing cost. It should be kept up to Rs. 100,” Ashim Chatterjee of Dwarka said. Sunder Singh, Mohammadpur suggested: “Please operate this line as other lines with the same fare and with interchange facility at New Delhi and Dwarka Sector 21”.

On Friday, all the feedback and suggestions were forwarded to Sharat Sharma, director (operations), DMRC. From Monday, a committee of senior officers will analyse the feedback, said the spokesperson. Some decisions based on the feedback might be taken in a week’s time, a source said.

DMRC is also considering a fare reduction to attract more people so that they commute by the high-speed trains.

Corporation Bank has sponsored a pre-paid auto-rickshaw kiosk at Mangalore Central Railway Station.A press release by the Corporation Bank said here on Friday that the kiosk is constructed on a large area with necessary facilities and better infrastructure, including a shed, for the convenience of the commuters as well as the staff.The kiosk has come as a boon for thousands of commuters at the Mangalore Central railway station, it said. J.R. Lobo, MAL of Mangalore (South), inaugurated the kiosk here recently.N. Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, and Kurian P. With the completion of survey for 15 KM railway track from Agartala to Akhaura in Bangladesh, the work for acquisition of land for laying the tracks would be started this year, official sources said today.

VADODARA: The Vadodara railway division of Western Railway is conducting a series of surprise ticket checking drives across the division.

On Friday, the division conducted a drive at Vadodara railway station wherein 246 cases of ticket less travel were detected and penalty to the tune of Rs 61,785 was collected. Along with this two penalty cases affecting cleanliness under section 198-C were also registered fetching earning of Rs 100 through the drive involving 21 ticket checking staff.

During the drive, one person named Ravi Shrivastava, 26, was apprehended and handed over to the GRP staff. Investigations revealed that Shrivastava, who is not a railway employee, was posing as a ticket checker.

Similarly, drives were conducted by the division in Bharuch-Surat section on June 27 and Vadodara-Bharuch-Surat-Vadodara section on June 28. During the drive on June 27, the division had detected 132 cases and collected penalty to the tune of Rs 40,720. Along with this nine penalty cases affecting cleanliness were registered fetching earning of Rs 650.

On June 28, 39 cases of ticketless travel were detected and penalty to the tune of Rs 46,010 was collected along with nine penalty cases affecting cleanliness. This drive conducted by 16 ticket checking staff had fetched earning of Rs 550 under section 198-C.

"Similar ticket checking drives have been planned in ensuing days. Passengers are requested to travel with proper ticket so that they are not penalized," senior divisional commercial manager Pradeep Banerjee said.
