Mumbai : The Central Railway and the Western Railway by converting the land around stations into ‘pay and park’ lots will not only get rid of the hawkers but also earn a handsome revenue.

The Western Railway (WR) have identified 11 stands for motorcycle, scooters and cars in Mumbai Division; the Railway presently gives the locations adjacent to stations to private contractors and earns crores of rupees as licence fees from them.
Dadar, Bhayander, Borivali, and Bandra Terminus (BDTS) stations are being targeted by the WR for the pay and park facility.
WR officials say that these pay and park stands would accommodate up to 2,000 vehicles and Mumbai Division of WR can easily earn over Rs 30 lakh per annum.
BDTS has a major encroachment by hawkers below the flyover.
According to Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Mumbai Division of WR, Ity Pandy, “Many passengers have to come to the stations on their own vehicles and they need accommodation for that. No need to say, this idea has benefited everyone.”
WR did a survey to fix the rate and also compared its rate with BMC’s parking rate. WR earned Rs 3.03 crore last fiscal in this head.
CR has identified Ghatkopar, Kurla, Kanjurmarg, Panvel, Tilak Nagar, Mulund, Parel, Nahur, Kopar, Neral stations and already renewed running contracts.
Currently CR has given 25 car-parking locations in Mumbai Division near railway stations, which have emerged as a decent tool for revenue generation.

Chief Public Relations Officer, Atul Rane, said, “Undoubtedly, traffic is going upward day by day and assured parking is the need of the hour. So, we have short-listed a few potential stations and we removed and cleared the existing utilities there.”

NEW DELHI: Four companies have evinced interest in setting up a railway network in Mozambique, a development that may help Coal IndiaBSE 1.79 % in transporting the output from its twin mines in the African nation."The Mozambique government has invited expressions of interest for setting up of a rail network for coal evacuation in the African nation and four companies have shown interest," a source privy to the development said. He refused to name the companies that expressed interest.Coal India (CIL), which won a five-year licence for exploration and development of the mines in Mozambique in August 2009, had earlier considered setting up a 450-km rail network to transport the coal to a port. There was also a proposal for CIL to rope in a partner to build the rail lines.The two coal blocks - A1 and A2 - at Moatize in Tete province are spread over 200 sq km and are being developed by Coal India Africana Limitada, a CIL subsidiary.The contract for initial drilling was awarded in November last year. CIL informed an inter-ministerial panel the first stage of drilling had been in completed May, sources said."Further drilling started in the first week of June 2013. The selection of an agency for drilling of 30,000 metres was completed in May 2013," Coal India recently informed an the inter-ministerial panel, which reviews the performance of maharatna firms.

BILASPUR: Bilaspur railway station, one of the busiest junctions of South East Central Railway (SECR) is getting a facelift and boost in passenger amenities with the commissioning of its first escalator and a misting system next month."The escalator will be inaugurated on Independence Day", SECR divisional railway manager L C Trivedi told TOI."It is a big achievement in provisioning modern passenger amenities segment. After successful trials and inspection, the escalator facility would be open for passengers," he said.Referring to installation of misting system in platform number one, Trivedi said installation of cool wave breezer would bring relief during scorching heat in summers and humidity of monsoon.The system would only be the second of its kind in the country, the first one being operational at Raipur railway station.

Informing that shades have been erected on all platforms for the benefit of passengers during summer and monsoon, Trivedi said stalls of branded food chain like Comesum have been permitted to start their service inside railway premises.

Besides this , the division has also carried out beautification work. and improved the elevation of railway station building.

South Western Railway has augmented Mysore-Bangalore City-Mysore Passenger, Bangalore City-Tumkur-Bangalore City Passenger, Bangalore City-Tumkur-Bangalore City Passenger, Bangalore City-Arsikere-Bangalore City Passenger and Mysore-Bangalore City- Mysore Passenger with two additional general second class coaches with effect from July 21.

Each train will have 18 coaches consisting 16 general second class coaches, one general second class coach-cum-disabled coach and one second class luggage-cum-brake van. In order to clear extra rush in the Bangalore-Mysore Section, Mysore-Bangalore City-Mysore Chamundi Express has been augmented with two additional general second class chair cars with effect from July 21. — Staff Reporter

The Railways has announced the closure of the level crossings between Ponmalai and Tiruverumbur railway stations on July 23 and 24 to facilities track relaying works. The level crossing numbers 321 and 322 between Ponmalai and Tiruverumbur will be closed for road traffic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 23. Level crossing numbers 323 and 324 will remain closed between Ponmalai and Tiruverumbur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 24.

Ticket-checking drive at Ernakulam Junction fetches Rs.1, 68,162 towards fare, penalty

Ticketless travel in the railway network of the State is on the increase if one goes by the penalty collected and cases registered during the ticket-checking drive carried out by the commercial wing of Railways.On Thursday, a mega ticket-checking drive at Ernakulam Junction fetched Rs.1, 68,162 towards fare and penalty.As many as 428 cases of ticketless/irregular travel were detected by the team led by Arun Thomas, Assistant Commercial Manager, Thiruvananthapuram Division, along with ticket-checking staff, Railway Protection Force, and Government Railway Police.Railways obtained Rs.1.41 lakh as fare and penalty during a drive at Thiruvananthapuram Central and Pettah railway stations on July 8. Special ticket-checking drive organised between Kayamkulam and Thiruvananthapuram Central on June 24 resulted in the detection of 265 cases for Rs.90,675.

Railway traffic has been disrupted between the Sindi and Tuljapur stations on the Nagpur-Wardha section of Central Railway due to heavy rains. Ten mail and passenger trains were cancelled after the ballast under the tracks and a minor bridge along the stretch were washed away completely. — PTI
