| nikhilndls | Madurai division withdraws platform station masters on : July 29, 2013 - 09:00:56 AM |
|
MADURAI: The shortage of station masters has forced the Madurai railway division to withdraw those on platform duties, greatly irking the other members. However, railway officials said that it was a temporary arrangement till the new set of recruited staff arrive at the division and the old status will be restored. The railway junctions are provided with three station masters in general wherein two of them will be in the cabin handling the panel and block, while the third will handle the platform. Recently, the platform station master at Rameswaram was withdrawn but was reinstated due to technical difficulties. But the platform station master at Virudhunagar was withdrawn lately and the yard station masters at Milavittan and Tirunelveli were asked to handle the platform affairs as additional duty.According to the All India Station Masters Association (AISMA), the role of a platform station master is crucial in busy junctions because they handle the public and have to cater to any emergency on the platform. The station masters at the cabin could not be disturbed since they carry out the train operations; hence, an additional station master on platform is very crucial for smooth operations."Platform station masters endorse the bulk booking reservations, handle emergencies both on platforms as well as in train operations. For instance, the medical emergencies of passengers in stations have to be attended by the station master," S Kalayanaraman, divisional president of the association pointed out. "In any run over cases, the entire burden of handling the dead body and the legalities fall upon the platform station master and handing over platform affairs to cabin station masters will be very tedious and put train operations at stake," he mentioned.Of the total strength of 542 station masters in the division, there are nearly 160 vacancies and the existing staff, are working under enormous pressure. Recently, the unions staged demonstration in this regard.V Ramkumar, working committee member of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union said there is a 25% shortage in the station master category. "Platform station masters play the role of public interaction and handling emergencies and the division should fill the vacancies at the earliest," he said. When contacted, additional divisional railway manager, V Ajithkumar said that they have to resort to this arrangement due to shortage in the division. "This is only a temporary arrangement till the new set of assistant station masters, who have been recruited reach the division after five to six months and the old system will be reverted by then," he said. |
