The Palakkad division of Southern Railways has submitted a Rs 16-crore proposal to the Railway Board for the development of facilities at Mangalore Central railway station.

Participating in a review meeting convened by the Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel here on Monday, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Palakkad, Mohan A. Menon, said the proposal for development of a second entry to Mangalore Central railway station was submitted to Railway Board, through Railway Headquarters, for sanction in 2013-14. But it was not sanctioned. However, fresh proposal with modified cost has been processed again. It is being submitted to Railway Board for consideration in 2014-15, he said.

Of the Rs 16-crore works proposed, some of the major works include the construction of platform numbers 4 and 5 at Mangalore Central station, and the construction of a new foot-over-bridge and the extension of the second foot-over-bridge at the station.

It may be mentioned here that the Palakkad division had mooted the idea of developing Mangalore Central railway station at a cost of Rs 17 crore in 2012. This included the construction of fourth and fifth railway platform at Mangalore Central, and the opening of the second entry for the railway station.

The Mangalore MP had sought the opening of the second entry for the railway station to ease congestion during peak hours, and to construct two more platforms for the smooth movement of trains.

To a query by the Mangalore MP on declaring Mangalore Central railway station as world class railway station, Menon said that the Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation (Kitco) will do the perspective plans for the development of world class stations at Mangalore Central, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

“The Kitco will do consultancy and identify the private partners. This is what we have been given to understand,” he said.

A bomb detection squad scanned the Vriddhachalam railway station on Monday after officials received a threat letter three days ago.

The letter said that bombs will be planted in the station or trains if those arrested in connection with Advani pipe bomb case are not released within 25 days.

The letter, apparently sent from Tirupur,  also had a mention of ‘al-Ummah, Madurai’, official sources said.

Though the letter was received by the station master on Friday, the officials delayed search operations seeking permission from higher-ups. The station master had forwarded the letter to the regional headquarters (Tiruchy), the sources added.

The letter also said that liquor, ganja and a huge amount of money were being smuggled in trains passing through Vriddhachalam and this trend has to be stopped immediately.

“These demands should be met within 25 days, otherwise bombs will be kept at Vriddhachalam Railway Station or in trains that pass through Vriddhachalam,” the letter said.

Searches started on Monday after station master Issac handed over the letter to the police. Ten members of the bomb detection squad is camping at the station and are conducting searches, the sources added.

An 18-year-old boy sustained grievous injuries after he fell off a moving train near Tilak Nagar station on Monday.

The Wadala Government Railway Police (GRP) first suspected the accident took place while the teenager was performing a stunt, but, it later turned out that he fell out of the coach because of the morning rush-hour crowd.

The GRP was informed about the incident by the Rajawadi Hospital authorities as the boy’s friend rushed him there not knowing he had to inform the railway authorities first.

The teenager was identified as Fahad Shaikh, a resident of Govandi, who was on his way to Nagpada, where he works as an office boy.

After Shaikh boarded a CST bound train from Govandi station around 9.27am, he pushed his way into the crowded compartment and managed to get to the footboard on the opposite side. But, as the train slowed down near Tilak Nagar station, Shaikh fell off the train and landed on the tracks.

“Shaikh’s friend Aslam Ansari, who was travelling with him, along with another person, rushed Shaikh to Rajawadi Hospital, forgetting to inform the railway police officials or the stationmaster.

We were informed about the incident by the hospital authorities,” said Sampat Potghan, assistant inspector of Wadala GRP.

Kacheguda-Mangalore special train will depart from Kacheguda at 06.00 hrs on August 6, 13, 20 and 27 (Tuesdays) and arrive in Mangalore at 11.20 hrs the next day.

In the return direction, the train will depart from Mangalore at 20.00 hrs on  August 7, 14, 21 and 28 (Wednesdays) and arrive in Kacheguda at 03.40 hrs on the third day (Fridays).

Aurangabad-Tirupati special train will depart from Aurangabad at 18.40 hrs on August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 (Fridays) and arrive in Tirupati at 19.00 hrs the next day.

In the return direction, the train will depart from Tirupati at 21.15 hrs on August 3,10,17,24 and 31 (Saturdays) and arrive in Aurangabad at 20.30 hrs the next day.

KANYAKUMARI: Rail users in the district have urged the railway authorities to operate daily trains from Kanyakumari to Hyderabad through Tirunelveli and Madurai, which, according to them would benefit nearly 15 districts in the state. They further said that the operation of such train would help a large number of people employed in Hyderabad and also increase the inflow of tourists.The Kanyakumari District Railway Users' Association (KKDRUA) has proposed the extension of 12603/12604 Chennai - Hyderabad - Chennai Express to Kanyakumari which will meet their demand.According to S R Sriram, president of the association, Kanyakumari district is provided with connectivity to all major cities like Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore through daily train services and destinations like New Delhi, Howrah, Jammu Tawi through weekly train services. However, the important connectivity to Hyderabad is lacking for the region though thousands of people from the region are employed in various fields especially in the IT sector. "We urge the railways to extend the Chennai - Hyderabad -Chennai Express daily to Kanyakumari so that it will serve large number of people. It should be noted that the trains originating from Chennai towards Hyderabad hardly travel 70 km in the state and if extended, it will serve people of 15 districts of the state," he said.

P Edward Jeni, secretary of the association pointed out that there are many tourist attractions for those travelling from Andhra Pradesh especially the temples in Trichy, Madurai and Kanyakumari. "Even the government of Andhra Pradesh has approached the railways to operate trains to Kanyakumari for the benefit of its people travelling to Kanyakumari," he mentioned.

S Ravi, a consultant of Intellectual Property Rights in Hyderabad and hailing from the region also seconds the opinion. "There is a craze among the people here about travelling to Kanyakumari and visiting many temples. Besides, the sizeable workforce in IT services in Hyderabad is from Kanyakumari district with educational background. A train service to Kanyakumari from Hyderabad will receive abundant patronage," he stated.

At present, people who travel to Hyderabad from Kanyakumari district had to go to Chennai through night trains and spend the day in Chennai before boarding the evening trains to Hyderabad. "The direct train will be of great help for thousands of our people from the district who travel to Hyderabad this way," Jeni said. Recently, the railways started operating a weekly train from Madurai to Kacheguda which has enabled Deccan connectivity for the first time. "In addition to the daily train to Hyderabad, it can also be one more additional train to reach Chennai from the southern districts," a rail user from Madurai added.

JAMMU : A team of health wing under the supervision of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Health Officer Dr Vinod Sharma seized a big consignment of banned item Gutka from the Railway Station. Dr Sharma, while addressing the reporters, informed that the consignment was packed in 12 cartons, which cost around Rs 4 lakhs.Earlier, the team also seized 12 kg polythene and fined defaulters Rs 7000 in the area Panama Chowk and Bahu Plaza. The Health Officer further warned the defaulters to desist from using the banned items.

ISAKHAPATNAM: Officials of the Waltair division of East Coast Railways (ECoR) conducted a massive surprise check at Vizianagaram railway station to catch ticketless passengers on Monday.This follows a report highlighting the absence of such drives due to staff crunch in the division, in TOI a week ago. During the nine-hour check, the officials found that many school and college students were travelling without proper tickets, including time-barred season tickets. "Keeping in view their future, we counselled them on the spot on the consequences of violating rules," a senior railway officer said.

About 12,000 tickets were sold at the general booking counter at the station on Monday, earning the Railways revenue of Rs 2.3 lakh, an increase of 179% over the previous day and 325% over the same day of last year, said M Yelvender Yadav, senior divisional commercial manager.

The sale of monthly season tickets (MST) also rose steeply, with 177 MSTs being issued against 13 MSTs on the same day last year - and an increase of 1,262%. The increase over the previous day was 205%, he said.

Defaulters and unauthorised persons on the railway station premises and trains would be penalized under sections 137,138 and 139 of the Railways Act 1989 and they would face imprisonment for as much as six months or fines as high as Rs 1,000 or both, Yadav said.
