Barely 24 hours after a supervisor at a Namma Metro worksite was killed when a six-tonne steel frame collapsed on him, a rider was injured on Monday when an iron beam fell on his motorcycle along the same stretch. According to the police, Sridhar (38) was passing by the worksite near Gorguntepalya, when the H-beam came crashing down on his vehicle, injuring him.

Once a sleepy station on the outskirts of Bangalore, the Krishnarajapuram (K R Puram) station is all set for a makeover, in phases.

According to station manager John B Abraham, the changes are a result of informal complaints made to him by travellers. "People approached me saying that they were facing a lot of inconvenience as some bogeys stretched on beyond the length of the platform. Hence, I sent a proposal to the sub-divisional office requesting that the platform be extended to accommodate 24 coaches, which is the standard length for long distance trains now," he told City Express.

A railway spokesperson told City Express that the construction would be completed in two weeks. He said that a 150-year-old bridge that passed through one end of the station had obstructed extension of the platform and had been demolished two months ago.

In anticipation of accidents that could occur due to increasing traffic -  as many as 44 trains stop at the station both ways in a day - a foot over-bridge from platform 1 up to platform 4 has been constructed. However, this reporter observed people alighting from platform 1 to cut across the tracks, often hurriedly even as a train was within sight.

When questioned about this safety issue, the station manager said that the gate opening into platform 1 was kept closed most of the time in order to prevent trespassing, for which those who violate the norms are liable to pay a fine of Rs 200. He added, "We also want to give an entry point to the foot over-bridge on platform 1 from inside the station and also extend the barricade between the tracks so crossing that way is harder."

Currently, most of the long-distance trains stop on platform 4, while the incoming trains (towards Bangalore City Station) stop at platform 3. Platform 1, which is long enough only for a mere eight coaches, is used for goods and mail trains.

A passenger said, "The authorities must be told to extend the shelter too as, right now, they only cover a part of the platform. So, it only has to start raining, and everyone gets wet."

This too, it seems, is on its way to being implemented in the second phase of the project. A tea kiosk is to be set up in a fortnight, along with a food court, which is to become functional in a couple of months, according to Abraham.

This apart, Abraham added that water shortage is a problem, with the station having to buy 5 tankers of water on a regular basis to use in the toilets. "A proposal for a prepaid auto stand has been sanctioned and should be functional in about two weeks. People are asking for an ATM now," he added.

A general waiting room too is conspicuously missing. "We have an upper class waiting room, but not a general one. Nor are we planning for one in the near future," said Abraham.

The Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) today agreed to review every quarter the progress of three rail projects, which are critical for transporting coal from CIL mines located in Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh."CCI today agreed to review the progress of the three rail projects quarterly," a source close to the development said.The railways lines include Tori-Shivpur-Kathotia (Hazaribagh) BG triple line for the North Karanpura coalfield (CCL Jharkhand) and Jharsuguda-Barpali BG double line for IB Valley coalfield (MCL, Odisha), sources said."The environmental hurdles are holding up the implementation of three rail projects," the source added.These projects are getting delayed mainly due to forest and land acquisition issue, they added.The government had earlier said that two rail projects, including Tori-Shivpur, are likely to be completed by the end of 2017 and will facilitate coal evacuation besides pushing up production of the fuel.The third link, Mand-Raigarh Phase-I in Chhattisgarh, is expected to be completed in the beginning of the next Five Year Plan period, Minister of State for Coal Pratik Prakashbapu Patil had said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha."Commissioning of these rail projects would facilitate coal evacuation from ongoing and future projects and thus help in increasing the production and supply of coal from these coalfields," the minister had said.

लखनऊ। मेट्रो रेल निर्माण कार्य में मदद करने वाली संस्था की तेजी से तलाश शुरू कर दी गई है। फिलहाल इसके लिए अर्ध सरकारी कंपनी रेल इंडिया टेक्निकल एंड इकोनॉमिक सर्विस (राइट्स) सबसे आगे चल रही है और उसे ही काम सौंपे जाने की तैयारी है। कंपनी दुनिया के 55 से अधिक देशों की महत्वपूर्ण परियोजनाओं में मदद कर चुकी है और भारतीय रेलवे के अंतर्गत काम कर रही है। लखनऊ मेट्रो के लिए बनाई गई हाईपावर कमेटी के समक्ष इस कंपनी को अंतरिम कंसल्टेंट बनाए जाने को लेकर विचार किया गया है। बहुत जल्द ही कंपनी के फाइनल किए जाने की उम्मीद की जा रही है।
एलएमआरसी का गठन किए जाने के बाद मेट्रो के तमाम शुरुआती कागजी कार्य कंसल्टेंट की मदद से किए जाएंगे। इन जरूरी कामों में डीएमआरसी के एलाइनमेंट का मौके पर परीक्षण किया जाना, डिपो की डिजाइनिंग, जनरल कंसल्टेंट के लिए टेंडर डॉक्यूमेंट तैयार करना, सारे एलाइनमेंट के लिए जमीन का रिकॉर्ड तैयार करना आदि शामिल हैं। डॉक्यूमेंटेशन के काम के लिए अंतरिम कंसल्टेंट के रूप में केंद्र सरकार की संस्था राइट्स के चुने जाने की उम्मीद है। मेट्रो सेल की ओर से इस आशय का प्रस्ताव लखनऊ मेट्रो रेल कॉरपोरेशन के समक्ष रखा गया है। राइट्स के बारे में कहा जा रहा है कि वह इस काम को लेकर विशेषज्ञ संस्था है।

दुनिया भर में राइट्स का नाम
राइट्स ने इस तरह की कंसल्टेंसी का काम दुनिया के 55 से अधिक देशों में किया है। रेलवे के अधीन इस अर्धसरकारी कंपनी का मुख्यालय गुड़गांव में है। अफ्रीका, लैटिन अमेरिका, एशिया के अनेक देशों की बड़ी ढांचागत परियोजनाओं में राइट्स ने महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। इन परियोजनाओं में मेट्रो, रेल नेटवर्क, ट्रांसपोर्टेशन जैसे काम शामिल हैं और कंपनी ने वहां की सरकारों को मदद की है। मेट्रो सेल से जुड़े एक अधिकारी ने बताया कि फिलहाल राइट्स के नाम पर विचार किया गया है। वह सबसे आगे है। मगर अन्य कंपनियों के बारे में भी विचार किया जा सकता है
