LUCKNOW: Metro cell started short listing entries for the metro logo design on Wednesday.

The cell confirmed having received more than 1,500 e-mails from public. The cell had asked public to send in designs for metro logo and has received an encouraging number of entries.

The cell headed by housing secretary Rajiv Agarwal reviewed about 400 e-mails on Wednesday and evaluated designs of more than a thousand logos.

Applicants have included both historical culture and modern developments taking place in the city in their logos.

MYSORE: Railway Protection Force has booked hundreds of railway passengers for violating rules in July and collected Rs 2.99 lakh from them in the form of fine.

As many as 846 persons were booked under various sections of Railways Act for carrying inflammable articles like kerosene, LPG cylinders, smoking in train and in Railway premises, for pulling alarm chain, trespassing railway premises, damaging level crossing gate, travelling on foot board and in ladies compartment and for disabling coaches, a released said.

Yamunanagar/Ambala:
Scheduled to start its first journey on August 9 from Ambala, the Ambala-Yamunanagar-Delhi Express train has been put on hold for an indefinite period after Union Minister Kumari Selja and the railway authorities locked horns over its timings.The minister in a formal statement had recently announced that the train would leave Delhi at 5 pm, but the railway authorities claimed the departure timing to be 1.30 pm.This led to some friction between the railway authorities and Selja, who had been instrumental in getting the train started for Ambala and Yamunanagar which are part of her parliamentary constituency. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching fast, it was being perceived as a major poll issue by the minister, sources said. Recently, the Union Minister had announced that the train would start plying on the Ambala-Yamunanagar-Delhi section from August 9. The minister had also asked the Ambala railway authorities to organise a function on August 9, where she was to flag off the train.

The sources said it was after the residents of her constituency demanded that the departure time from Delhi railway station be changed to 5 pm for the convenience of working passengers, whereas railway board fixed the time as 1:30 pm. As the matter could not be resolved, the launch of the train has been deferred.

NAGPUR: Derailment of 25 coal-laden wagons, 7km from Pendhra Road in Raipur division under the South East Central Railway ( SECR), has led to diversion of six trains from Nagpur. According to senior divisional commercial manager ( SrDCM) Pradeep Kumar, the mishap occurred in Sarbhera yard following which at least six trains have been diverted via Nagpur.

The trains include 12853 & 12854 Amarkantak Express between Durg and Bhopal, 18477 and 18478 Utkal Express between Puri and Hardwar, 14710 Puria and Bikaner Express, and 15159 Sarnath Express between Chhapra and Durg.

MANGALORE: The Palakkad division of Southern Railway will soon introduce an effective waste management system to keep the Mangalore Central Railway station clean.

A waste management unit, that will convert waste generated at the centaury-old station into biofuel, will be set up at the station and the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, (NITC) is currently working on the project. However, officials said that the project is still in the initial stage.

The issue came up in a recent meeting chaired by Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel. At the meeting several passengers and people's representatives had complained about lack of cleanliness at the station.

Southern Railway additional divisional railway manager Mohan Menon told TOI that the division is contemplating on putting in place a permanent mechanism for waste management in all stations including Mangalore Central.

"It is found that the tracks are littered with food packets, plastic bags and bottles and foils used for covering eatables. A few passengers also use the toilets on board the train while they are halted at stations. We have held discussion with NITC and soon will come out with a system to address the issue of lack of cleanliness," he said.

He added that the division has already reserved Rs 17 crore for various infrastructure developments in and around the Central railway station. "We are focusing on waste segregation at the user end. The waste management should start from passengers," he said.

GUWAHATI: Revolutionary songs in Kokborok - a language spoken by tribal communities in Tripura - reverberated as activists of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and its affiliate Tribal Youth Federation (TYF) staged a day-long protest in front of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) headquarters at Maligaon here on Wednesday.

Hundreds of DYFI and TYF activists from Tripura and Assam protested against delay in railway projects in the northeast. They were also demanding that vacant posts in the railways be fulfilled immediately.

Protestors belted out revolutionary songs in Kokborok language to express their demands amid slogans and speeches by DYFI, TYF and CPM leaders.

They asked why work on Lumding-Badarpur-Silchar-Agartala, Rangiya-Rangapara-Murkongselek broad gauge conversion, rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra river at Bogibeel, new broad gauge railway tracks from Kumarghat to Agartala, from Agartala to Sabroom, from Azara to Byrnihat and from Dimapur to Kohima, were taking so much time to complete. The leaders also wondered why Rangiya-Murkongselek broad gauge lines, which have been completed some time ago, have not yet been opened.

"The delay in completion of railway projects in the northeast only highlights the neglect towards the region. There are several vacant posts in the railways. Had these posts been filled, several local youths would have been recruited. Railways should have been an agent of development in the northeast," DYFI Tripura state secretary Amal Chakraborty said.

TYF general secretary Pranab Debbarma said, "We are demanding a separate railway division in Agartala besides improvement of services in Tripura. So many posts in the railways are lying vacant. We want immediate recruitment against these posts."

Former CPM legislator of Assam, Ananta Deka, said both the Centre and the state government have been neglecting development of railway services in the region.
