The Minister of Railways Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has called upon all Zonal Railways to ensure ‘Zero Tolerance to Accidents’ on Indian Railways. In his message to the General Manager of all Zonal Railways, Shri Kharge said “Safety culture is essential for any organization to achieve good safety results. With sustained efforts in the last decade, Indian Railways have reduced the number of accidents per million train kilometers from 0.44 in 2003-04 to 0.13 in 2012-13. Further effort is required to make Indian Railways free of accidents.

MANGALORE: The gross earnings of Salem Division up to July 2013 is Rs 173 crore which is 13% more than what was earned during the same period last year, said SujathaJayaraj, divisional railway manager, Salem division.She was speaking during the 67th Independence Day celebrations at Salem. Sujatha said despite being the youngest Division of Southern Railway, Salem Division, has grown exponentially since its inception in the year 2007 and has bagged the runner up shield for overall efficiency shiled among the Divisions of Southern Railway.Recalling the historic opening of Salem-Karur newly laid BG line thrown open to passenger traffic since May 25 this year, she listed out a few developments that are taking place, such as nearing completion of new subway in Coimbatore Railway Junction, new Foot Over Bridge and Passenger Lifts in Salem Junction, extension of Salem Station Building and improvement of Circulating area therein, provision of airconditioned waiting room in Salem Junction, etc.

She also said that extension of subway in Salem Junction has been approved and the front elevation of Tirupur junction is nearing completion. Improvement of Parking area, frontage of the station building and concourse area of Erode Junction are also being undertaken and a model information counter has been instituted at Karur Junction.

She further observed that Peelamedu station has been declared as an Adarsh station and all efforts are being taken to make the Nilgiri Mountain Railways' journey safe and enjoyable. On the safety front, Sujatha pointed out that the Safety records of Salem Division continues to be excellent with no accident involving coaching or goods services.

Railways have decided to introduce a New Weekly Express Train between Sainagar Shirdi and Puri for the benefit of passengers.  The details are as under:

Train No 18408 Sainagar Shirdi – Puri Weekly Express will leave Sainagar Shirdi at 13.00 hrs o­n every Sunday w.e.f. 18.8.2013 and arrive Puri at 23.00 hrs next day i.e. Monday.

Train No 18407 Puri - Sainagar Shirdi Weekly Express will leave Puri at 22.15 hrs o­n every Friday from 16.8.2013 and arrive Sainagar Shirdi at 08.25 hrs o­n third day i.e. Sunday.

ALLAHABAD: Sleuths of Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Wednesday nabbed an alleged tout identified as Tamim Ahmed, a resident of Bairahna near the main hall of Allahabad junction.The RPF sleuths also recovered nine confirmed tickets for Mumbai, five cancellation tickets, three token forms, 10 empty forms, two PAN cards, Rs 21,800 in cash and one mobile set from his possession.Acting upon a tip off, a team of RPF personnel led by inspector (RPF) Anand Kumar reportedly nabbed the tout red-handed when he was making an abortive bid to book tickets on fake names. The RPF after frisking him recovered confirmed and cancelled tickets. The tout, as per RPF officials, had even taken token to book two more tickets and was having two PAN cards with him. A case has been lodged in this regard.

South Western Railway not in a position to add additional coaches or run extra trains to clear rush

Travelling to Andhra Pradesh from Karnataka during the coming Independence Day weekend may not be easy, with inter-State bus services coming to a complete halt.The Railways too is not in a position to add additional coaches to trains or operate extra trains to cater to the extra rush thereby making hassle-free commuting a remote possibility.The three State road transport corporations operating inter-State bus services to Andhra Pradesh have completely stopped their services to Andhra Pradesh owing to unrest there over the Telangana issue.The transport corporations, which initially stopped operating buses to Andhra Pradesh a fortnight ago, resumed operations, though only in the night, three days ago. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, North Western KRTC and North Eastern KRTC were operating night services to Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Mantralayam and Kurnool.However, after the staff of Andhra Pradesh SRTC too joined the Telangana stir, Karnataka RTCs have found it difficult to operate their services, said KSRTC Managing Director N. Manjunatha Prasad. “We have decided to wait and watch,” Mr. Prasad said.

KSRTC Chief Traffic Manager (Operations) Ashok Kumar said even APSRTC buses were not being allowed atop Tirumala from Tirupati. Some KSRTC buses are stranded in Andhra Pradesh but they are parked in safe places and one of the officers is camping there, he said.

Even private operators are running fewer services. Rajashekhar, Managing Director of SRS Travels, told The Hindu that buses were being detained for hours together in the neighbouring State. “But we are operating about 60 per cent of our services,” he said.

Rail service not hit

Train services between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have not been affected so far. However, Divisional Railway Manager of South Western Railway’s Bangalore Division Anil Kumar Agarwal said that the South Western Railway is not planning any augmentation of services, either by way of additional coaches or trains. He said that South Western Railway is facing shortage of coaches and trains. On the other hand, all trains towards Andhra Pradesh are running packed, he said.

South Western Railway General Manager A.K. Mittal said that most of the trains towards Andhra Pradesh were being run in their full composition — 23 or 24 coaches. There is limited scope to augment coaches. If there is big demand for extra trains, the South Western Railway would consider it, he said.

VARANASI: IG, zone, GL Meena has been awarded the President's Police Medal for distinguished service. He would receive the medal on the Independence Day on Thursday. Meena is among seven police officers of the state who have been given this medal. Meena, started his carrier as a sociology lecturer. He was selected in Indian Police Services in 1987. Before being posted as IG of Varanasi Zone, he served as SP/SSP of different districts, including Varanasi.Apart from him the former SP, city, Vijay Bhushan, who is presently posted in the human rights cells of state police at Lucknow, has also been selected for President's medal for gallantry. He had received President's medal in 2008 and 2010 too.

Meanwhile, the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will also be hoisting the national flag on the occasion. Flag hoisting at BHU will be done at divisional office, North Eastern Railways (NER). Mahila Kalyan Sangathan of NER will distribute fruits and other edibles to patients at Divisional Railway Hospital on Thursday.Vishal Bharat Sansthan and Muslim Mahila Foundation will also celebrate Independence Day.
