The revenue divisional commissioner (RDC) of central range Dr. Arvinda Padhee on Wednesday reviewed the progress made on construction of two important rail links in the State which were pending completion since long. The RDC, in the presence of several government and railway officials, took stock of the Haridaspur-Paradeep and Angul-Duburi-Sukinda rail links as the Railways have often attributed land acquisition as the main stumbling block for delay in completion of these projects.While the Rs. 594.34 crore 82-km Haridaspur-Paradeep project was conceived in 2006 has made very little progress in land acquisition, the 90 km Angul-Sukinda project is the worst performer as the Rs. 417.47 crore-project conceived way back in 1998-99 is yet to see the light of the day.In today’s meeting however, the sources informed that land acquisition for the Haridaspur project is nearing completion while the survey work has begun for the Angul project.

Rich tributes were paid to late Indian Railways archer Cherukuri Lenin at the inaugural of the 8th DRM Cup inter-department volleyball tournament at Railway Institute on Tuesday. The league tournament, organised in memory of the archer, witnessed 11 Vijayawada Divisional teams taking part.At the inaugural Senior Division Sports Commissioner Ramesh Chandra said that Vijayawada Division also staged kabaddi and cricket regularly for the employees. “Such department tourneys will strengthen the bond and develop camaraderie among employees.They also get some relief from their routine work,” he pointed out.Hailing Lenin’s contribution to Indian sports, Mr. Chandra said that it was unfortunate the talented archer died in a freak accident in 2010 after helping his trainees win a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games at New Delhi. “His (Lenin) contribution to Indian Railways will always be remembered.”Sports Welfare Inspector Arjuna Rao thanked Mr. Chandra for his efforts in helping a ball badminton player — Sampath Kumar — getting an out-of-turn promotion. “Kumar, a divisional player, was accorded ‘Star of India’ honour by the Ball Badminton Federation of India and he helped Indian Railways win medal at the Senior Nationals. He was promoted as technician from helper,” Mr. Rao said.

The spikers maintained two-minute silence in memory of late archer. Assistant Security Commissioner (RPF) Sambasiva Rao, Railway Institute Secretary S. Venkateswara Rao and International Referee D. Netaji took part in the function.

Even as security is being beefed up in and around the railway stations across the State in view of the Independence Day to be celebrated on Thursday, the Government Railway Police have started distributing safety awareness pamphlets to commuters.Giving tips for safe train journey, the pamphlets appeal to the public not to cross the railway track, which is not only a dangerous act but also a punishable offence. The handbills ask the passengers not to share or accept eatables or soft drinks from strangers.Besides distributing these pamphlets to the public coming to the Tirunelveli Railway Junction, the police have also started checking the baggage and the parcels arriving here. Patrolling on the platforms has been intensified.

Dindigul

The Railway Police have intensified surveillance in express and passenger trains and brought the Dindigul Railway station under security blanket ahead of the Independence Day celebrations here on Tuesday.

Already a check point has been set up at passenger ticket reservation office, entrance of the railway station to check passengers’ luggage.

Night patrolling has also been intensified on platforms. The police were travelling along with the passengers in express trains up to Tiruchi as a protection measure, Ms. Mahalakshmi added.

A door frame metal detector will be installed on Platform no.1 tomorrow to check passengers.

बताते चलें कि आतंकवादी धमकियों के चलते केंद्रीय सरकार ने स्वतंत्रता दिवस वाले दिन हाइअलर्ट की घोषणा की है। इधर पश्चिम मेदिनीपुर जिले के झाड़ग्राम सहित जंगल महल में भी लगातार अस्त्रों की बरामदगी एवं माओवादियों द्वारा वर्ष 2010 कोझाड़ग्राम स्थित राजबांध इलाके में माओवादियों द्वारा ज्ञानेश्वरी एक्सप्रेस हादसे को अंजाम दिए जाने को ध्यान में रखते हुए रेलवे द्वारा भी मंडल में हाइअलर्ट की घोषणा की गई है। खड़गपुर रेल मंडल के वरिष्ठ सुरक्षा आयुक्त पीवीएस शांताराम ने कहा कि संवेदनशील स्थानों पर कड़ी नजर है। यात्री सुरक्षा के मामले में स्थानीय पुलिस की भी सहायता ली जा रही है। दूसरी ओर स्वतंत्रता दिवस पर छुंट्टी के चलते ट्रेनों में खासी भीड़ देखी जा रही है। ऐसी ही भीड़ गुरुवार को भी होने की संभावना व्यक्त की गई। खड़गपुर रेल मंडल के वरिष्ठ वाणिज्यिक प्रबंधक विवेक कुमार ने कहा कि राष्टीय अवकाश की वजह से ज्यादा भीड़ दूरगामी ट्रेनों में होने की संभावना है, इसलिए इसमें कटौती नहीं की गई है, लेकिन मेदिनीपुर-खड़गपुर-हावड़ा रूट की लोकल ट्रेनों में कुछ कटौती की गई है, क्योंकि छुंट्टी के चलते ऐसी ट्रेनों में अपेक्षाकृत भीड़ और दिनों के बनिस्पत कम होती है।

The 45{+t}{+h}Tiruchi Town Official Language Implementation Committee meeting was held here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi.Rajbhasha rolling shield and certificates were awarded on the occasion to the best Central government offices, undertakings, and nationalised banks for implementation of Official Language for 2012-13.Among the Union government offices, the Divisional Railway Manager’s Office, Tiruchi, was awarded the first place and Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project secured the second place.This is the second consecutive time that the Tiruchi division is winning the shield.In public sector undertakings, the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India Limited, Karur, bagged the first place and BHEL secured the second place.Among nationalised banks, Canara Bank bagged the first place and State Bank of India secured the second place.A magazine brought out by TOLIC titled “Rockfort Rajbhasha” was released on the occasion.Prior to the meeting, a Rajbhasha exhibition was organised in which 15 member offices participated and exhibited their Official Language implementation models, a Southern Railway release here said.

After changing the location of the ladies coach on trains running on the Violet Line, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is now planning a similar exercise on the Mundka- Inderlok/Kirtinagar (Line-5) to facilitate boarding and alighting of women passengers. Starting Thursday, women passengers using metro trains from Inderlok/Kirti Nagar towards Mundka will find the ladies coach at the end of the train. However, those travelling the other way will continue to find the first coach reserved for women.

MUMBAI: Three unidentified boys tried to rob a woman journalist at knife-point in a Harbour line train on Tuesday afternoon, after she warned them not to perform dangerous stunts.

"It was a traumatic experience; the image of one of the boys charging at me with a knife will haunt me for a long time. The boy brandishing the knife was barely 12 years old; the other two were 15 to 16 years old. I never imagined that somebody could make such a bold robbery bid in a moving train," said Bhavna Sharma, who works with the a media professional with the regional press and a linguistic expert with the Censor Board. She did not suffer any injuries.Sharma boarded the first-class ladies compartment of the 3.55pm CST-bound train from Wadala Road station. "There were two other women in the compartment, and they both got off at Cotton Green station," she said. At Cotton Green, the three boys got in the compartment on noticing that Sharma was alone. "I was sitting near the window; they were standing on the footboard and dangerously hanging out of the train. I politely asked them to refrain from doing such stunts, but one of the boys said that they had enough experience of travelling like this," she said. "As the stations passed, the boys kept staring at me. I overheard them planning to pull my gold chain. When they moved towards me to sit in front of me, I got scared. But I sternly told them to get off the next station and get into the adjoining men's first-class compartment."

Suddenly, one of the boys whipped out a knife and came charging towards Sharma. "I immediately removed my sandal to defend myself, and started screaming for help. A few youngsters in the adjoining men's compartment heard me scream and rushed towards the partition between the two coaches. But the boys hid the knife and pretended like nothing had happened," she said. They jumped off the train at Masjid station.

Sharma got off at CST and registered a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP). The CST GRP will forward the complaint to their counterparts in Wadala, as the incident took place in their jurisdiction. "We will call Sharma to the police station on Wednesday, and then decide what action should be taken," said JitendraRathod, senior inspector, WadalaGRP.

Alok Bohra, senior divisional security commissioner of the Mumbai division, said, "We will hand over the CCTV footages from all the stations between Wadala and Masjid to the GRP."

Elias George, MD, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) said that the Kochi Metro will change the way the city is being perceived by outsiders and it will prove to be a lever for reinventing the city.This will also lead to the integration of all forms of transportation in the city, which is a basic condition for the project sanction.He was addressing the KMA members on the topic ‘Make Over for Kochi City’. He pointed out that there are plans to set up two townships in the city including Muttam and Kakkanad.The next KMRL board meeting will discuss about the consultancy of the project. The consultancy will be selected based on their international reputation.The townships will have facilities for housing, trade, entertainment and employment opportunities. As part of encouraging pedestrians, footpaths will be constructed at the township.There will also be facilities for cycling and gathering of people. An idea box has been  created on the website of the Kochi Metro to enable the public to post their suggestions.According to Elias George, the idea box will help in creating an idea bank of experts in this field. Though some of the Metro rails are not running on a profit, the branding of the cities will bring in more investments.There are plans to link the townships with waterways available in Kochi. The timings of Metro, water transport and buses will be linked enabling the passengers to use these mode of transports without waiting at each station.

For all the mode of transport, one ticketing system will also be introduced. A project will be submitted to connect the water transport with Metro to Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Vypeen areas, he said.
